I wish I could get them fixed...

I was just sitting here thinking about some things and one memory just popped back into my mind. When I was at my old job a guy came in (I was the secretary), and I was talking to him about our products. He was one of the rude customers we had so I never knew what to expect when he walked through the door but this particular time I will never forget. He told me that I should really get my teeth fixed when I am dealing with the public every day. =( You know, I am super insecure about my teeth. I am pretty until I open my mouth and then I see nothing but UGLY! I am not rich though so I cannot afford to get them fixed, I have no health insurance either...I am so ashamed of my teeth and people are so mean sometimes. That hurt so bad. I can never get past that comment, I don't know if I ever will get past it. Has anyone said anything hurtful like this to you? Do you think your teeth say a lot about you? =( Is the world really becoming that shallow???

It's a pity you didn't say you'd fix your teeth when he fixed his personality.

I wish I thought of that one! I was so shocked at the time he said it I didn't really know what to say. I thought of a million smart a$$ comments after he left and I was kicking myself for not thinking of them sooner! Lol

My husband and I do product demos in grocery stores, and he has bad teeth. He has full denture uppers and bad lowers. A hygenist approached him in the store. Led him to believe it was low income at her office. We learned that we are not going to use them. You need to look into some free or reduced care in your area. It was rude of him to say something so hurtful, and the state of available dental care in the US is pathetic. There is not much coverage anywhere. In many states dentists will get together and offer a full day of free services to anyone who comes and stands in line. If you hear about it you should try to take advantage of it. Hubby could have two years ago and did not. Having bad teeth does not just affect your self esteem, it causes other health issues as well.I hope you find a way to get some help.

I have not checked to see where you live. I do not believe that woman really was lying. It is just that we have NO extra reliable income to make payments with or to get a medical credit with. Many people do not really believe how poor others can be. They did their best to save us money on that consultation, but for the next step, doing things at a discount, they still want $20000 straight up, and that is not going to happen. I do know of some really reduced income places to go for dental help, because I do not know where that free day is this year. I am going back to work part time. We both already have another part time job each, but it is an on call type position. I have to do that to make sure that the bills get paid every month.

So, did she lie about being low income at her office? A lot of them say that but it is way more than the average person can afford. I have looked into the lower cost one we have here. They are all students and they only do things like cleanings or x-rays, no major work that I need done. So far that is the only one I have found. The other one say they are a lower income but they are way too expensive for me! It was very rude of him and it hurt a lot. I still cannot get over it and I have not worked there for 8 months now. I have not seen the free day here, I know in NY where I used to live a dentist did that because that was the only time we went when I was younger. I have to keep a look out for it here. I know it can cause many health problems and that worries me. I cannot take food away from my kids to get my teeth fixed. My kids come first so I am stuck with bad teeth, at least for now...

I'm so sorry this happened to you. No, I don't think the world is becoming more shallow. Some people just don't know how to keep their opinions to themselves. And that guy was terribly rude to say that to you. If he couldn't say anything nice, he shouldn't say anything at all. There's nothing worse about feeling insure with something about yourself, then for someone to point it out...especially in a negative way. I've had something like that happen to me before, although it wasn't about my teeth. However, it came from a little boy, so I couldn't be too offended by it as he was too young to know any better. I won't lie though, it still hurt a little. Anyway, you say that you want to get your teeth fixed. I know you're not rich, but is it possible for you to make payments? Orthodontics can be very expensive, but a lot of places do offer payment plans. I'm pretty sure my husband did that when he got his braces. I know he did that when he got his caps.

Thanks. It hurt pretty bad. I agree, some people think without caring how the other person will feel by their comment. He was that type of person. He told the other woman that worked there that she should lose some weight and people would take her more seriously! He was just really mean. Exactly, I was already really insecure about it and it was very difficult for me to work with the public as it was with my teeth the way they were. Then to have him point it out did not help me at all. At times kids are the worst with saying what they see but like you said they don't usually know better. It still hurts but at the same time we have to think about where it is coming from and it is usually just what they see. I called a dentist today that you can go and get a sliding scale by what you make. I am going to try to see if I qualify for that program. The thing is they still require the money up front, it is just a lower amount than what others have to pay so I have to see how much I would still need to pay. If it is between feeding my kids or getting my teeth fixed, well my teeth will have to wait. My kids come first and that is the reason I have not gotten my teeth fixed before...

I completely understand. My kids come first as well. I hope things out in your favor. I know there are programs for low income families when it comes to dental for kids. If only there could be programs like this for adults... Good luck! PS By the way hubby just reminded me that he got crowns, not caps. LOL

Sometimes, specially when I was young and frail, I wanted to be able to have a ready rude reply to those kind of comments. After reading your post, I would have said (if I had thought of it) that teeth can be fixed, but brain cannot. That man was ugly inside, no matter how he was in the outside. Forget about your teeth. There is always someone mean who will say something rude about us, even if we are awesome

Rude people will see other people`s flaws with magnifying glasses, but they are incapable of seeing how disgusting they are.

Yeah I wish I had one at the time. I was purely shocked so I could not even answer him with anything. I just went in the bathroom and cried for a few minutes after he left. I did not want to give him the satisfaction of seeing me cry. That is true. If it was not my teeth it would have been something else. Someone will always have something to say...

That's really a mean thing to say! I think people's personality are much more than their physical looks. We shouldn't be judging people by the way their teeth look. Even if she has to deal with the public. I hope you don't let this get you down too much.

Yeah it was so mean. It hurt really bad but I try not to let it get me completely down. I agree, we should not judge people by their looks. The personality is what really is important. Maybe one day I will have beautiful teeth...

My girl friend feels the same way. She had a problem years ago with her teeth. She had an accident. But now the teeth she has have to be redone. She has been taking her time with it. And it all comes down to the money. It does cost a lot of money for teeth. Don't stress yourself out. I also have to get mine cleaned. Because I smoke they get stained quickly. And no matter how much I brush, they stay that way. I need to get a cleaning again, but I have to save the money. Don't worry, in time you will get the money to get your teeth fixed. Don't let anyone put you down.

Good, you are better then that. I know she will get her teeth fixed. She needs to save some money. She also has insurance for teeth as well. But they do not cover everything unless it is a medical problem. And she has some issues there, so maybe she could get thing done as a result. And even if it costs some money for her, they will work out a payment plan. And I believe you will get your teeth fixed. It will take some time, but you will get there.

I know how she feels. It is embarrassing and I hate looking at myself in the mirror this way. =( I wish I had the money but my kids will always come first so I don't know if I will ever get them fixed. It is a LOT of money and it sucks that it is that way. I wish there was a way I could afford it. I hope one day they will be fixed. Thank you, I will not let anyone make me feel that way again.

To answer your last question first, yes, I think the world is becoming that shallow. Looks are more important than anything to a growing number of people. If you don't believe me, look at what women do to themselves to "look better." And now men are doing it, too. Plastic surgery, implants, face lifts, days spent in salons... all about looks. It's ridiculous. I don't think teeth say much of anything about who you are. If they're bad, as in needing fillings or replacement, that can be a health problem. Other than that, teeth are individual, just like noses and ears. It has to do with what one looks like, but not with who one is. And lastly... I don't remember anyone saying anything like that to me. He was a rude, crude person who had no business butting into your business. Keep that in mind.

I think you might be right peavey. Looks are very important to most people now a days which is terrible. There are so many more important things... It is definitely a health problem which also worries me. I know it can cause so many other issues. I know he was extremely rude. He hurt me a lot. But he should have just shut his mouth.

I think that should not matter , but there are so many people with so many tastes.People do feel good when we smile , but it doesnot mean they can tease us with our disabilities. My mom used to tease me with my teeth turning yellow when I was kid I used to be very scared to even smile :)

I don't think it should matter either but some people are rude and cannot keep their comments to themselves... I wish I could smile but I can't, not the way I want to. Maybe someday I will be rich and be able to afford the dentist.

I don't have perfect teeth either and i when i was a kid it was my siblings who teased me that i look like a rabbit. I didn't mind! I don't have nice legs either and i hate it every time my sister would mention it and she likes mentioning that in front of other people which makes me feel worse. Nobody else could make me feel insecure about my legs but my sister!

Yeah, siblings can be pretty mean too! I have had that happen too. Someone will bring up teeth somehow in conversation and I want to crawl under something just so no one will see mine. Family should not be mean to each other like that though. That is horrible. =(

Shame about your teeth as you have a really pretty face. I thought all Americans wore braces and had perfect teeth by the time they were 20. I guess I am wrong. If that is all that is wrong with you, then the investment in fixing your teeth would no doubt repay itself in no time. Think about it!

Thanks for the compliment. No not all Americans are rich. I am no where near rich and my family never was either. You need lots of money to get work done at the dentist. I would get my teeth fixed if I did not have 3 kids to feed. They come first and always will. =) I am not taking away from my kids for myself. Maybe one day I will be rich and be able to see the dentist, until then I am stuck with terrible teeth. =(

Sorry to hear that.. Just like you I have a problem with my teeth and I am going to fix them when the time comes that I have enough money. Anyway, just ignore them. All wrong things they did to others will be returned to them twice or thrice. (if you believe in a word 'karma')
• Valdosta, Georgia

Thanks. Yeah the money is the biggest issue. It is not affordable to go to the dentist. Not at all. At the time the comment bothered me a lot. It still bothers me a little but not as bad as it did at the time. I absolutely do believe in karma so I know that guy will be sorry one day...

Hi LovingMyBabies, I am so sorry that person was just so bold ss to say thst to you and hurt your feeling...I have never ecperienced that..I mean no one has ever daid it to my face,,but I know they made comments behind my back because I did have a bad tooth on the side, but i did get it fixed because it made my smile a little fake because I really could not laugh like I wanted.. I tell you I was always a jovial person but I felt so much better when I knew people wasn't looking into my mouth. I am not sure if your teeth say anything about you be it certainly has a tendency of other may be thinking either you don't take care of yourself properly. Normally if you see someone working you would think they would have insurance. I am not sure what type of work you do but I would actually check around with friends and family..There are a lot of inexpensive medical facilities in neighbors...We have one here called Open Door and I have ever bee there but I do know they service people witb limited income... Check around and much luck to you...if you can save a little at a time from your paycheck and then go to a regular dentist I am sure they might assist you if you go with monies..... Good luck to you!!!!

Thanks. He was super mean. I think at that time I would have rathered him say it behind my back to be honest. It would not have hurt so much. I cannot laugh at all with my mouth open and I hate it. =( It bothers me so much. I do take care of my teeth now but its too late. When I was younger I only went to the dentist two times my whole life and my parents never made me brush my teeth at a young age. I was a lazy kid so if I was not made to do something, I wouldn't. My parents should have made sure we brushed. Bad teeth also run in my family. My mother has dentures, my grandma does, my aunt has implants, and my dad has a lot of cavities too. Genetics suck sometimes... My job did not have any insurance plans at all or I would have been going to the dentist. They did not offer any benefits at all. It was a smaller company that could not afford that for their employees. We have one place here that offers lower amounts of pay BUT they are all students who are not dentists yet and they only do things like cleanings and minor things, probably so they do not get sued when they mess things up. I need major work done on my teeth so they would not help me... I am out of work now due to moving. I do not have a job. Were on very limited income because my husband is on workers comp. I am good with money when there is money coming in but we live off the $300 per week he makes. We have 3 children.
