I work for a big company (canada wide) they are lacking in money making, and they are laying off thousands across Canada. Its starting with my position first so many across Canada will be out of a job. Our supervisors union is trying to fight for us, but Im not sure where they will get. Im already starting to look for a full time job to beat the others.

Sorry to hear that! But I think you're smart to be looking for a new job NOW - or least seek what your options are. Any time there are red flags at work about possible lay offs (eek - especially in this economy), you gotta do what you gotta do to save yourself! Best of luck with your search!!

Better get out while you can. An unstable company is the worse place you can work at these days.

I can't imagine doing that. As much as I hated my old company, I at least knew they were stable.

I'm glad you know atleast this far in advance. About two months notice is better then such a shorter notice. I've worked for places that have given me about a month's notice that I will need to find another job. I've known people who worked at a job I used to that were given two weeks notice that they were closing and that they'd have to find something new.
Hope you can find something soon. Is this the same place your mom and sister work as well?

Yes, its the same place but my sister is in the same boat as me, but my Mom most likely will keep her job. But we arent sure exactly but they send a national newsletter telling everyone. So its just sitting on the edge waiting on whether you keep your job or not. But come the end of August my seasonal job is over again for the season. So Im stressing a little to get even something small on the side, its hard finding a job let alone one that will wait for you.

I know it is tough here as well. Randy lost his job in September and we ended up moving to Nevada (which was a big mistake that I will not get into now). I have not been able to find work before Randy had gotten hurt and now that Randy is hurt neither one of us is working. We are both attending an online university and we get financial aid money. I try to save my money, but since my parents think that we are made of money they want every cent we have. I hope you can find something soon. I am looking for a new place to live so Randy and I can go back to normal and go back to saving money instead of having to give it to my parents. When randy lost his job he had no warning and it was tough. I hope you can find work soon.

It really sad to know that you are out from your job in this year. I know you will be very sad with it but don't become much sad becuase there are many other companies which can give you job. So keep away all your disappointment and keep searching for a good job. You will mostly jet a job becuase you are an experienced one and you have all the qualifications.
All the best

I hope they don't have to let anyone go, this economy is crazy! I don't feel safe in the world at any point sometimes. It's good you have 3-4 jobs to fall back on at least. Some don't have even one job, and they have been looking for over 2 years. It is a scary life.

I agree the economy is unstable and its just ridiculous. I know many who work 1 job, and refuse to work anymore. I have to work 3 -4 jobs because I cant find a full time steady job. But if one looses I still have an income just need to budget. A guy I went to college with was looking for 3 years and no place would call him back (he didnt have much experience or education though). I have been looking and I think my issue is because I work so many jobs right now, but its not cutting it either.

So sorry to hear about this, i hope everything turns out well with your company. times are really hard and i believe before they even thought of laying out people, they too have already tried to consider how many people are to be out of job when they do. not all companies are as bad as we think... but while this is the case, it is best that you do find another job and with this you will in fact be ahead of the others who are still waiting for the finalities of the work in your current company. at least whatever happens, you are ready for it.

You seem to me to be a smart cookie so I'm sure you have allowed for this sort of contingency.
This sort of thing often happens and with the world economy like it is it will be happening more often. I just hope people are being sensible and putting a little by for a rainy day.

HI Ricki!
I did not know that you have create a new mylot account, that is why I don't get any notification of new discussions from your old account. Never mind.(^^)
I bet I missed so many discussions of yours. So is this one of part time jobs that you currently have? You must be sad that they are going to close down in August. Its better for you to look for a new job. I am sure you will find like what you did before.(^^)

I am sorry to hear that. I hope that your employees union could do something about your present situation. I will also pray that you could find a job so you won't be suffering from unemployment for long. I also experienced this kind of situation years back. I was employed in a private company then and I was happy with everything. But one day, our manager told us that our client no longer communicate with them and no longer pays for our services. We were all shocked since it happened in just one day and we're already told not to report the following day. I feel sorry for myself but I also felt the same way towards our management since they have already paid our salaries for that month but our client has not paid them for almost 3 months. I was also thankful for that company since they gave each employee good recommendations. I believe that because of them, I was able to find a good job after few months of searching. I really hope that you'll be able to find a good job sooner.

I am sorry that you will be losing your job. Sadly the economy is bad all over and it can be hard finding work. At least you can get a head start on looking. I know my brother has not been able to find work and most companies are not really hiring, but are accepting applications. My mother keeps on pushing my brother to look for work, but what she does not understand is that the economy is bad and the job market is bad. I know my brother is trying hard and he does get to the interviews on time, but when he calls to let them that he is still interested the manager will say well, we are not really hiring all we are doing is accepting applications.

I'm sorry to hear that Ricki. I hope you would be able to find a new job as soon as possible. Years before, my friends who were working in other countries, already have this problem. Several foreign-funded companies in our country also have similar problem. So I can say that this is worldwide problem. I hope everything will be okay.
