We Bought A Moldy Snack!

So, my husband went to the store to get the kids a snack earlier. He bought them Honey Buns. The date was fine on them and everything. So he opened one of them and there was mold all over it. Green and hairy! Gross. My kids only took a bite before my husband noticed it. We didn't even open the other 2, they went in the trash.
I really hope my kids will be okay. Anyone else have this experience? Did you or your kids get super sick? I am so worried!

This has been happening a lot lately with the heat we have. It shouldnt make them sick at all. I remember as a kid eating an entire bun (bread), and not evne noticing the mold. A friend did the same and it was all in her head, her mother flipped out, and just the reaction of them both made her sick (seriously she does it over everything and anything). I would email the company and complain you would most likely get a free coupon, or your money bacl.

I have never had this happen before. Your right they have not gotten sick at all thank goodness. We are bringing it back today to show them because it was too late last night when he got it.
And were also going to email the company too...

lovingmybabies one time I got spoiled yogurt and took it back and the clerk showedd me the outdate on it, seems a new clerk had not seen that the case of yogurts were to be thrown out and instead he
put them all back on the shelf. so I got four free yogurts f rom the store man ger and another time I had a whole half gallon of soured milk and the s ame thing , one person had weeded it out, left it for a moment and another clerk had put it back in the c old storage shelf. so I got a fresh replacement of milk, the manager even openedit and poured some out to taste to be sure nobody else had stuck back an outdated milk.vons store is very good about things like that and outside those two incidents in all the time I had bought at vons never got anythiong spoiled before.

That's crazy and nasty. Milk and yogurt are the worst when sour. Any milk product being sour just turns my stomach!
That is good that they were so good about it. The store gave us our money back and a free coupon for another snack...
So, that was good. The manager told us they will need to start watching the shelves better for bad food.

Don't worry I've done that before, the bun I ate looked good on the top, I took a bite or two and it tasted horrible, when I looked underneath it was moldy. I didn't actually get really ill from it but that taste and just the thought of it made me a little queasy.
I would have gone back to the store and made a complaint or if there was a number to call for complaints I would have done that. It's not nice finding something has gone off before the expiry :(

Yup, that is EXACTLY how it happened with them. My husband took a bite and realized how bad it tasted and looked on the bottom and there it was...So gross! My kids already took a couple bites though before my husband did so that's why I was worried.
But they are just fine thank God. =)
We did go to the store. They gave us our money back and a coupon for a free snack which we will probably not be using...just in case!

Yeah I wouldn't want to get a snack from there ever again either! But I'm glad you were able to get your money back from it and rightly so. I'm kind of also surprised your kids didn't really say much about the taste, seems a little odd but glad they are OK. I knew they would be though and that's just a bit extra for the immune system to fight off :)

I have accidentally eaten mould many times in my life and nothing bad happened at all. Just an unpleasant taste. Many foods have mould.. Cheese is a form of mould and there are some cheeses that you can see the blue veins - as they are called, but they look more green to me.. I don't like any of them, but they do not harm people, unless there is some sort of food allergy or intolerance. I would think your kids would be OK as it wasn't poultry or other meats that tend to go rancid, which can be a bigger problem.. _Derek

This was the first time it happened to us so I really wasn't sure... Thank God the kids were fine. =)
I don't like anything with any kind of mold either. So nasty. Yeah if it was meat they would have been going to the hospital.

Yes, this happens to us also.
I brought the bread back to the bakery and ask for a replacement.
I also tell them to check their stuff to avoid same problem or else they will lose their business.
I am not sure if we will get sick for taking a small amount of mold- or how sick we will get once we have taken a lot.
Hope everything will be fine- or else you can sue the merchandise owner.

This was the first time this ever happened to us and hopefully the last. We brought it back and got our money. They gave us a coupon for a free snack but we will not be using that.
Thank God my kids were fine. I was just worried since this is the first time it happened.

I already experience this. One of our colleagues gave us cake, it was delicious but upon looking at the center, we saw tiny molds. We stopped eating and let it goes to trash. We haven't experience any sickness from eating it.
I just hope that your kids will not get sick. In case, you can try to have them good bacteria like yogurt or any drink with live beneficial bacteria as first aid for possible effect of the molds.

good that your kids didn't get sick. Some stores will not refund the money but will change the item with a new one.

We brought it back and we got our money back and a coupon for another snack.

I've been to that situation too. I myself made a bite on a food called Monggo Buns last week. It was dark because of blackout. That moment I felt hunger. I opened it and made a bite and after chewing it a bit, I felt that it tastes moldy. I went near to a light and then noticed that it has molds already. I immediately vomited them all before they had entered my stomach. I didn't get sick maybe because they have not entered my stomach. Maybe you should give your kids some vitamins or ask some prescription from a doctor.

We couldn't return it that night because the store was closed by the time they ate...

Wow! You should have went back and complained where you got them, so that if they do cause sickness to your family, they would be the ones to cover the expenses and damages.
Anyhow, it depends on your kids. If they're all neaty-gritty all the time then they're bodies wouldn't be able to fight off these stuff. But since you just said that they just took a little bite or something, then they'd probably be okay.
You'll see if they start having diarrhea after 4 hours. If not, then they're okay. But have their stools checked though.
Have a great MyLot experience ahead!

It is so important how things are packaged. If any moisture gets in it is in trouble. You should call the company and give them all the information on where it was sold, when, etc. and take them back to the store. One gal on here wrote about some bread she had bought that tasted funny to her. The company customer service was excellent. They brought her a basket of all kinds of stuff.

Each case is different as to if someone will get sick or not. But if I had been you, I would have taken the Honey Buns to the store and ask for a refund at least, plus some sort of extra for the trouble and the worry. I think that throwing the buns into the trash can lets the store go on selling food that is not eateble. If they were with mold, either the expiration date was past or they were not kept in a proper place.

Well thank God my kids were just fine. My husband was a little queasy but I think that was more the thought of what he just ate.
Yes we did take the one back. It was too late that night to do anything since the store was closed. They gave us our money back and a coupon for a free snack which we will NOT be using. We threw the unopened ones away because we didn't care at that point. We kept the one we opened and showed them the receipt. They gave us the money for all of them back which was great!
The expiration was not past, we always check that before we buy anything!

Oh my! Yes, this has happened recently - but with a batch of grapes I bought. We got them in a plastic packaging - and plucked one for each of us for a quick sample. Well, when I took some out to wash, I noticed there were some fuzzy things on it - and realized the whole thing had fuzz (where the grapes attached to the stems mostly). Luckily none of us got sick!
One time I bought a chocolate bar from a health store. It was wrapped like any other chocolate candy bar. I remember it had rice crispies in it. Well, I remember opening and taking a bite. I looked at the rice crispies a little closer as I saw the rice crispies MOVING . . . omg, there was like a city of these white looking ants living in that candy bar. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! I stuck it in an envelope and promptly returned it to the store. They believed me and didn't want to see it . . . so they offered to replace it with another one. Um, no thanks!!!

Yeah it was GROSS!
Grapes, ew. I have never seen moldy grapes and I don't want to either, Lol.
My kids didn't get sick either. My husband felt a little nausea but I think it was just from the thought of it to be honest...
Oh my gosh!! Bugs??? So gross, that is just plain nasty. Yeah, I would NOT have gotten another one either. I would have been like you really want me to try that for a second time??? Once was enough. Lol.

Yes I had the same experience, the expiration date seems okay but when we open the package it was moldy, ouch I think it was because the store did not put them well. I drink coconut water after I realize I ate a moldy bread, its not green and hairy but it was moldy but lucky i did not eat the whole bread. My parent said coconut water can help to neutralize the toxin that might contained in the moldy bread.

Yeah we check dates on everything because were so paranoid about this type of thing happening. The date was perfect though, it didn't expire for weeks. But the store put that date on it, NOT the company!
That's good that you got coconut water in you. I have heard it is very healthy.

Why did you throw those bread? You have to return it to the store so you can get your money and warn to sue the store.. Anyway, next time don't just throw what you bought esp. if it is rejected. Return it back to the store and ask for your money and warn to sue them..

Mold is only dangerous when its eaten repeatedly for a while. It could give them the runs or make them nauseous, but I don't think its anything life threatening. Honey buns have so much sugar they almost never get moldy. I would avoid the place you bought them if they are selling products like that.

When this happens you actually need to take it back to the store so they are aware of this and it is reported so that no one gets sick. It generally will not hurt anyone if they have a bite of it but if they are allergic to penicillan like I am then yes it can actually cause a bad allergic reaction.

I would have brought them right back to where I bought them and thrown them in the store owners face. Then I would complain and report them. That is disgusting to sell food like that. I've had this happen with cakes like honey buns. I think it's because of the moisture content. These are very very moist and if the store is kept at a too high temperature or if they were driven in a truck that was too hot this can happen. It has been really hot lately in parts of the U.S.

Oh yeah absolutely. I'm just saying how I think it happens. It really shouldn't happen. They should be given special instructions on what to do during hot weather. I really don't think they do anything differently and they should, as far as driving and storing goes.
And they should because they are going to kill someone one day like this if they haven't already. I have actually seen them at stores, while walking to and from my car, take stuff from the back of the truck then set it all down in the parking lot to organize it, leaving a bunch of food in the parking lot on the ground while they take other stuff in, in hot weather!
