I went to the supermarket to get some fresh chicken. As some of you know, i am into bodybuilding and chicken is an important source of protein for me. As i was selecting the chicken, i kinda remembered a discussion that me and my fellow bodybuilders talked about at the coffee table regarding eggs. There's fear that these eggs that we find in the supermarket are "corrupted" eggs or full of antibiotics or some kind of hormones. It may sound good when i say antibiotics but i need to remind most of you, these antibiotics or hormones are specially formulated for chickens so that they live longer i.e strong against certain types of disease that may kill the "healthy" chicken and grow faster. Our discussion evolves around, what will happens if we eat alot of these chickens? Is there any side effects to the human body?
So here i am, i am still wondering and hoping that some mylotters, might be able to help me clear this suspicion of mine.

Hi el guardian: As you mention, the problem is not about the chicken but on the things people give them to eat while they are growing that make them unhealthy. I think these antibiotics may has an impact in humans because we were not suppose to eat this. Anyway, I am not a doctor but I fear about it. Try to buy chicken on these farms that use natural systems to raise their chicken.

Yes, it is kinda amazing to see chicken grow up so fast for consumption. Also i don't understand how does these chickens could stay in a crowded compacted place. Of course they are not human beings, i don't expect them to have sofa and bed. Just that a crowded place could easily spread disease so that's the reason why they are given antibiotics or some kind of hormones or medication so they won't die easily. I am not so sure about chicken's life cycle though. I just fear it might just screw up my system one way or another.
I'll look out for the organic farmers or natural system farmers. I don't want to end up like hulk after being exposed to some kind of chemical or radiation haha. Thank you for your thoughts ALVARO.

I would imagine that some of those antibiotics and hormones are getting into our food supply. I don't know that they give them hormones though. The breed of chickens in your supermarket are virtually all white rocks which are bred to grow extremely fast without hormones. I can't imagine them giving them hormones to grow even faster. They are ready as fryers in only six weeks. I raised my own once and fed them organically and had them free range outdoors. Since I wanted healthier birds I rationed their feed to slow them down. Some of them grow too fast and suffer from right heart failure. In the industry it is also called flip over disease. Their cardiovascular system is not always able to keep up with their rapid rate of growth.
You want chicken that you can trust? Buy organic free range chicken or raise them yourself.

Good idea, raise them myself. I might as well make a business out of this as well to earn extra income. Hehehe. Since my dad has retired from his job, i could ask for his help to raise the chickens. Thank you my friend really good idea. Gonna check it out soon.

There was a man driving down the highway going about 55 miles per hour when this chicken with three legs began running beside him. He decided to speed up to 65 miles per hour, but the chicken stayed right beside him. So he sped up to 75 miles per hour, but still the chicken stayed with him. He came up to a fork in the road and the three-legged chicken went left and ran into a farm yard. Curious, the man decided to investigate so he pulled up to the farm and got out of his car. He noticed that the yard was full of three-legged chickens running around at high speeds. Still curious, the man went up and knocked on the door of the house and the farmer came out. The man asked the farmer, "How did you get all these three-legged chickens?" "Well," the farmer stated, "I have a family of three, and we all like the drumsticks, so I decided to engineer some chickens with three legs so everyone is happy." "How do they taste?" the man asked. "Well," the farmer said, "don't know, haven't been able to catch one yet."

Yes many things are fed to poulty animals nowsday from cow, pig, chicken , fish and many more either to made them grow faster, fatter and be more in numbers in the shortest time. There is nothing natural nowsday , all are genetically cross bred to made them faster. Usually those hormones are destroyed in cooking , i guess do not eat them raw.haha.

Cook them in microwave oven at higher temperatures. It helps lower the health risks related to spiked eggs.

Yup, it's somehow not safe to eat chicken sold at supermarkets because of the different applied chemicals just to maintain the health of the chicken. I actually seldom eat chicken and eggs bought from supermarket since I am raising my own chicks. I am afraid to get infected by those chemicals...you know, Health is Wealth!!

If you're really worried about the chickens in your super market then why not try your local butcher? I appreciate that in some places there are hardly any local butchers but you can normally find something. Aside from the chemicals in them which should be regulated anyway any food should be safe as long as it is cooked properly. If you're really to worried about chickens then perhaps protein powder would be a batter option?

I do take protein powder from various brands like optimum nutrition, gaspari and AST. But from what i learn from those guys in bodybuilding is that i should diversify my protein source. Protein powder that i have are the fast absorbing proteins which is good to be taken an hour before, during and after workouts. Proteins from food sources like chicken and lean meat are slow absorbing which i also need especially after workouts i.e when i sleep to promote protein synthesis.

If you have the leghorn chicken, which you normally get around your household, then its healthy. but the broiler chicken that we get at shops are mostly hormone injected. The farm people give a lot of water along with hormones and also place the hens under the tube light and the hen keeps on eating for long hours. Finally after 30 days, the hen grows to its full growth and it is given to shops. The hormone is actually harmful for our body and it can have irreversible effects on the health.

Most of the broiler variety of chicken available in supermarkets and meat outlets are reared and killed for food purposes. Since the growth of chicken during its life span is of concern no effort is spared to increase the body weight .It is a truth that growth hormone injections are often given to the chickens in a broiler farm. This in turn sets in a kind of artificial environment poultry farming.Apart from being less safe such hormone treated chicken offer little nutrition to the non-vegetarian fad.

Chickens in the US and Canada are NOT given hormones at all. The are NOT given hormone injections. They are given antibiotics and vaccinations to keep them from getting sick. I don't think that is good but I won't accuse the industry of doing something that it is not doing. White rock chickens are also not genetically engineered. They have been legitimately crossbred over time for rapid growth. Their fantastic growth rate is completely natural. Crossbreeding and genetic manipulation are two different issues entirely. GMO producers would have you think otherwise. Giving them additional hormones for growth would be a waste of money. I do not understand why people think that chickens are being given hormones. Other meat producing livestock like beef can be injected with "financial" benefit but chickens are not.
