Men with Hands on Hips??

I know a lot of men place their hands on their hip when they are standing. When I was much younger, I read the book, The Right Stuff, about the U.S.A. space program in the 1960's. In this book, the astronauts were coached in how they should appear in public, and one of the things they were told not to do is to put their hands on their hips because they were told that this did not present a masculine image.
I have noticed that some people continue to think things like this, as well as thing like men crossing their legs a certain way, or women wearing clothes that were once considered fit only for men.
What do you think about these kinds of stereotypes? Also, what do you think about the people who hold these kinds of stereotypes?

The only time I have seen my husband stood with his hands on his hips was if our son had been naughty and he had to tell him off.He used to gather himself up and lean over David ,he hated having to do it.Not that I discriminate at all most men who stand with their hands on hips are usually sweet. That is a sign to other sweet men and warn the girls off.

You have given an excellent description of a father disciplining their child, suzzy3. I can just imagine this scene.

I don't think it is a bad habit and a womanly habit!!! There are many men who do this and I don't feel it odd. Similarly I've heard many commenting on guys who cross their legs, that they are sitting like women. But again, I don't feel there is any norm that says women and men must have different ways of sitting and standing!!!

I used to like to have my hands in my hip when I stand up. Now, I grew up and I change my habit a bit. I like to have hands cross whenever I stand up, or have my hands behind my back. Maybe that was how I got affected at my workplace. Most people would do the same, and I also have to follow the same style.

Hello kingparker
I stand in all these ways you have mentioned as well. Sometimes I have to stand all sorts of ways to be comfortable.
Peace

I could not agree to it totally. My hubby used to have hands in hips but it is in one side. But it looks so manly. I don't think it would not for both hands.
Crossing legs in both gender looks great in my view. But sometimes it looks odd.

So what if they do? It doesn't matter anyways. let us just accept people of who and what they are.

If you study body language it can be noted that a hands on the hip stance shows the person is open yet being dominant and powerful. This is certainly not a feminine look by any means, except maybe when a woman is taking a stand against another person.
If I see a man with his leg crossed over the other at the thigh I worry he might be squashing his bits, he looks uncomfortable as if he needs to go pee or something. To me, men look more comfortable if they sit with their ankle on top of the other leg at the knee.
Women in short skirts should never cross their legs and women should never sit like men tend to with their legs wide apart. It's about body language and in the case of the latter, extreme body language...lol.
If I'm reading body language, am I also stereotyping?
When I was growing up, girls were taught to behave like ladies in a demure way. This was a direct contradiction of the changing times when women were being more involved with sports and the changing fashion where it was becoming accepted that there were times when trousers for women were quite appropriate.
The feminist era began quite some time before I was born but a lot of the old values regarding men and women and dress and behaviour were still very prominent.

I have heard this thing also, and I think is kind of a cultural thing, standing with the hands on hips, may not be seen so wrong here in Latin America, and in the US is another story. Stereotypes always leads to prejudice, and this, to take us apart from certain people, we donĀ“t think that "fits" with us, and, this is something not easy to avoid, I think that all of us has some type of prejudice, of some kind, yet, we do not have to allow this to apart us from other human beings.
