When it comes to writing would you hire someone who has a writing degree over someone who has no degree but has published ten books? I think this would depend very much on the kind of writing that is required - books? essays? articles? reviews? stories? creative writing? - and the kind of writing that the person is most suited for. This also brings up the question as to whether someone can learn to write and create the same kind of prose as a Heminway. Fiction requires an inquisitive mind and great imagination. I believe anyone can learn to write essays, reviews and articles, but natural writing is a gift and innate and in the same league of inspired writing of a Rushdie or a Steinbeck.

If I am going to hire someone, I do prefer who has the skills to write. It needs to prove through sample manuscripts from them. The skills of writing can be develop through time and passion.

If I was hiring, I'd want somebody who could do the work I wanted, and a degree can't guarantee that. A degree can teach you the theory, but only experience teaches you to write the way your clients want you to write. It does depend on the project, obviously, and a degree might make someone worth a look, but it wouldn't clinch the job as far as I'm concerned.
