my son just turned 18 and graduated high school. He cannot find a part time or full time job. Even the fast food places are hiring adults over kids these days. I think it is because so many older people have lost their jobs and taking anything they can get to make ends meet. Any suggestions for him?

This is a great opportunity for your son to learn how to be a business man. If he is still living at home its a perfect opportunity to pick up a job in sales or if he has a skill he can use it to start a small personal business. Its not ideal, but if he has moderate success it will look great on a resume, and give him an edge over other job candidates. If he is really successful he may not ever need to work for someone else.

yeah it's true...as what PhillyDreamer said, y not starting a small business by himself..in that way, his skills will be enhanced which later on if he will be deciding to look for a job, that will be an edge for him over the other applicants.

I would suggest checking with local organic farms. Small farms in your area may still need workers for the summer.
Or he could try self-employment--tutoring, pet sitting, house sitting, lawn care. Depending on your area, his skills and his marketing savvy, he may be quite successful at it.
Another possibility is home health care. These companies often have openings. The pay is low; the hours are long, and the work can be demanding. However, he would get to travel, interact with a variety of people, and no two days would be the same.

He can be an online English teacher if he is very good in speaking English. I have been an online English teacher for almost 4 years now. A lot of companies hire teachers because more and more people these days want to speak English well. The job isnt so hard either, its really fun.

Have him try retail. Malls are always hiring and even if he finds a seasonal job, they might let him stay after the "season". I had a hard time finding jobs too and I just turned 20. I got my first job in October and I work at the mall. The store I work at hires people right out of high school and they don't need experience. Suggest to him that he tries there. Just tell him to go around to first all the stores he'd be interested in and then go to other stores.

Well, most companies and businesses prefer to hire people who owns at least a degree. In fact, even a lot of degree holders can't get hold of a simple low paying job..hence why there's is increasing number wanting to go back to school in hopes of getting a masters degree. Of course there's another fact that determine if the job is yours or not and that is experience. Everywhere you go, you would see people prefer applicants with experience therefore..I would suggest your son to go intern or maybe volunteer..just to get done experience to put into his resume..
