Classic Films (The Black and White, Oldies Stuff)

I have been a fan of the classic movies for a while already. It all started when I first saw The Sound of Music a couple of years ago. Since then, I have grown fond of these kind of movies. Before being addicted to the classics, I have already began my fondness for watching films, the contemporary ones. I still watch some of these contemporaries but as of now I prefer more of the oldies. Even with our local films, I would better go for the films of our past decades. I root after the stars of those days, too, although most of them have passed away already. I think they did much better in the film industry before, with the acting, the story and the whole nine yards. I haven't been able to see much of the classics lately, but I have had my favorites. Casablanca and Gone with the Wind are the best, so far, of the handful I've seen. As for you, fellow MyLotters, what do you think about the classic genre of movies? Do you find them interesting, as well?

I love film, period. I was very fortunate that both my parents and sister were avid film buffs. There are so many great old films. One of my favorites is James Cagney and Rita Hayworth in 'The Strawberry Blonde", it's simple, it's cute and I always thought it a nice romantic film. There are so many that go under the radar. One was Jeanne Crain in 'My Little Margie'. Then you have the 'tougher films' Like "White Heat". A GREAT film noir is edward G robinson in "Scarlet Street" You MUST see this, it is absolutely awesome, a film before it's time. Another you might not know about is Jack Palance in 'The Big Knife", Geez, I can talk film all day! LOL. I'll stop here, but yes, very very good films. Take care :)

I think I've encountered The Strawberry Blonde once before, thanks for mentioning! Most of the films of the previous eras owned simpler plots, didn't they? But what made them stand out is the uniqueness their plot holds despite the simplicity they show... Or that was how I saw these films. :) Thanks so much for your other recommendations! I may try to check those out some time in the near future. :D

I only watch a few old movies.. mostly musicals since they make good ones at that time.. The ones i love are Sound of Music, West Side Story, Wizard of Oz and Grease 1 and 2.. it's hard to find copies of other old movies though.

Yes, the musicals then were really great, too. I had to agree with some copies that are hard to find, that is the exact situation of the classic films here in our country. It's really disappointing, but it's what had happened; people during those times were a bit ignorant when it comes to film preservation, and there were not much budget for these aspect. Until now, I still brood over the hundreds of titles that cannot be seen by the present generation, anymore.

I agree with you. I love Clark Gable movies like The Misfits or It Happened One Night. Casablanca is a classic that I enjoy also. On our cable network we have a channel that just plays old time black and white movies and I love watching them. I even have my hubby watching some of them with me

I haven't seen any of those Clark Gable films until now, but I heard and read that It Happened One Night was a good film, isn't it? We even had an adaptation of that very film here in our country. :) As for The Misfits, its his last film as well as Marilyn Monroe's, is that right? Yes, there are still some cable networks that show these classic films, like TCM and MGM networks. I only wish we could afford having a cable network connection so I could get to watch the films they air every once in a while.:)

I love classic old movies and one of my favorites plays during the holidays every year The Sound of Music and recently Julie Andrews did an interview for Target about her career. I was so glad that day I was on Facebook to read all the questions and her answers that was a great hour. I love Miracle on 34th Street the original and Macy's brings back wonderful family moments. Several movies that have been listed can be seen on the black and white movie channel. I do love that channel!

I have become a huge Julie Andrews fan but unfortunately, I lost track of following the updates about her lately. Thanks for sharing that information. I missed knowing these things about her. :) Is Macy the movie channel you were referring to? I'm not quite familiar with that name, perhaps the network isn't available in the cable TV network services here in our area.

Hi friend, i too like old movies and traditional songs, they have the ability to give peace to our mind and change our mood. Those old stuff are our treasures.

I agree, we should treasure these traditional songs, as well. They are a part of our culture, of our heritage and we must see to it that we will preserve them for the future generations to see. Thanks for responding! :)

I love the old war films and westerns. There are literally hundreds to choose from and whenever I am down at my nan's she has plenty of dusty VHS tapes to work my way through. They definitely had different values as to what made a good movie back then, the 40/50 year olds are great at suggesting some gems. Dirty Dozen, Kelly's Heroes, Great Escape...I often dig out films I remember watching when I was much younger like GI Jane and Disney films. Of course I don't think it's fair to compare them to movies nowadays. If you look at Avatar for example, what it lacks in acting talent and scripting it makes up for in stunning visuals and effects. Watching some old movies makes them seem really dated but they are great for their time and it's always nice to take a trip backwards in time.

Very well said. I got your point. But there are times that I can't really avoid making the comparisons, hehehe.

I have seen The sound of music with Julie Andrews playing the lead role. I liked the movie and watched for a thousand times but sadly that is the only classic movie I saw because that was the only movie we can afford to buy. happy mylotting!

Oh, I hope you could still see some more of these films in the future. Some films are available in the Internet for free, even the IMDb uploads the films sometimes. Thanks! And Happy MyLotting to you, too!

It is fun to watch old films, especially identifying the differences in a modern world today. It is not that complicated, very relaxing to watch. The mode of the story can move the emotions that we have, the feeling of excitement, the fun, the giggling moment, etc.
