I am in Europe and I am broke at the moment. I have never bee this broke in my working life. It is very ironic that, it is when I came to work in a first world country that I am having problems with money this bad.
I know all the reasons why and when it rains it pours. One payment to the next kept coming like moving to a new apartment, doctor visits due to an insurance system misunderstanding etc... I was not prepared for this. I am the person who is always good at managing my money, I always have some savings in the bank. But this time, it really reached rock bottom.
I am expecting money soon from the tax refund, insurance refund which would be deposited to my account in I don't know when and also a refund from my old flat's three months advance rent. But at the moment, I couldn't move. It is so difficult to be in this situation, I feel that my confidence level went really down too.

Life is only opening your eyes to the reality that you can't rely on material things, not even money. Wealth is really nothing. You have yourself and that's what all that should matter now. I know it's hard to be in that situation when you have obligations to meet and face. Be on your knees and ask our Father in heaven to rescue you. Be in faith and believe that you will amazingly surpass these things as if they are no problems at all. God hears our prayers. When you totally don't have anything, remind yourself that you have EVERYTHING in God. Prayed for you.

I know what you mean, thezone. I did ask Him for monetary help many times, as well. And, most of the time, I got not real big help. But, should that be a basis for us not to have faith in HIM? It's like, we ask certain things from our parents and they don't give those things to us as we please. Why? Often, it's not because they can't or they don't want to. It's because they think it's not yet the right time.

keep on finding ways and never stop doing so.. it happens to everyone coz there is no security in this life, not material things and not even our life. just accept the reality, do not let your worries in financial matters ruin your happiness. I know it's hard but you know life is like that. Always keep in mind that no storms last forever. so let us hope for the better and act in accord of our hopes.

Thanks for repeating these hopeful words.:) I couldn't hear myself anymore, no matter how I would want to think of happy thoughts. No man is an island. The mind is very powerful to do and think whatever it wants. A brief moment of talk with another person is more than enough to put its immense power to an effective use.

Well I think a lot of us have been here a time or two wondering when they will be able to pay off some of their bills, buy groceries etc. Even here in the US, there are many people going thru this. Even families like my husband and I. I know a lot of my struggle financially is due to my medical problems as well. What we find that works best for us is trying to stick to a budget and also praying and trusting and believing god to see us through. Learning to be strong and positive helps a lot too.

I think it is best to save money when one can. I think it is good to put coins in a box and to take it out when one needs or when one is broke. I try to not to borrow money as far as possible and I will borrow money only when I need and has no other choice.

"Piggy bank", I like your simplicity ajithal!:) I just throw coins in an area in the house and would just get surprised when I clean. There's an enough amount accumulated thru time, it could buy me a week's meal.
I got to a point that I said, I should just live my life and then not really saved as much as I did before. But now, with this untoward circumstance, I got hit on the head by a pebble falling from the sky. Yes, there is a saying that, we should live our life at present and not think too much of the future but then we should also think that we don't want to see ourselves in the ditch the next day.
I have to keep positive at the moment and always tell myself that this will soon pass and I am sure I am going to become wiser after this trial!:)

Finally a subject where I am a expert! What to do if you are broke? I would say prioritize is the first thing. When you have limited funds you really need to put it where it will do the most good. Food and shelter are at the top of the list obviously.
The second is communication. Tell people your situation. I once got a reduction in payment from a kind dentist by doing that. Of course I didn’t get the xray and normal checkup done just my filling replaced quickly but at least the bill was less. You need to look for freebies, they are out there.
A point about looking after ego/ pride when you are broke. Just keep breathing and don’t write you are an expert on this subject?

Hahaha!" An expert on this subject"... you made my day.lol!
Prioritize, you are right indeed! I am making sure my house is paid for and for a week now I tried planning where and which food to buy. Whew, I am really not taking this so well coz this dream of coming to work in Europe has finally happened but I am feeling the worst disadvantages at this time of destitution. If I were at home then I could easily come up with an idea and put it into action immediately to solve this problem. Painful reality!
Thanks Bluedoll!:)

i am no in europe but i did hear that ebwrything is not doing quite well in there. A friend told me so... But reality is that this problem is not only happening in your place or here in Asia. It is a crisis everywhere and i can understand you qith this to be hinest as i have been in that situation. Most of the time the expected money did not come on time or that ihave overly spent on something onlt to realize that i should have just ket the money for latter use. It happes but do not lose hope. Always do your best and the worst will always end and you will be on your way again. Sometimes we are just having set backs brought about by our decisions but we can always try to be careful and always think ahead in anticipation.

First-- It can ALWAYS be worse :-). Things aren't doing well at all in the good old USA either-- luckily, I live on a farm (for as long as we can keep it, anyway!). I have done the can collecting, dumpster diving, been a street musician and a mime, walked dogs for a free lunch, told fortunes for donations-- anything legal to make a buck, so survive. The other half and I make our own entertainment, cook at home, borrow movies from friends-- last year I sold all my old designer suits and dresses when I couldn't work anymore. I do freelance writing anywhere and everywhere I can, I collect and preserve starfish and sell them online... 8 years ago, the other half and I lived in an apartment in a big city, and we committed to listing 10 free ways to make money on paper every morning, and have used most of them. Now we live on a farm in the country with chickens and 3 alpacas-- and we still do that. It helps us feel positive, and sometimes we get really winning ideas-- one of those ideas got us on this farm for almost no money down. Don't ever give up, don't ever stop thinking, and don't ever be afraid to try even the craziest ideas. They might work-- ours did.

My husband and I collect used bottles and cans when we are broke. When we return the bottles and the cans to the shops we get money. It is not a lot of money but it is enough for some of most the important groceries like bread and milk. I don't know where you live and if a similar system exists in your country, but maybe there are other things that you can collect and exchange for money. Another thing that helps us when we are broke are the gift cards that my husband gets online. We have one gift card at the moment. It is worth $20 and we plan on spending it on food next time we visit the shop. There are a lot of other things that you do to save money like visiting a second hand shop instead of buying new things, finding ways to recycle things etc. I hope that your situation will improve soon.

Sorry to hear about your situation taiwanlife. I hope everything would turn well soonest. I have been broke so many times and I have done everything I can to recover myself for being broke. I never forget to pray and to ask for help. I always turn to my friends whenever I am in need and some of them would really help me. My friends and I have this nature that whenever we need money, they won't make us pay for it but when the time came that they will be the one who will be needing help, we would also give them and won't ask them to pay. I know that not all friends would agree to that kind of set up but it is really working for us. It is like saving as well. I really hope that money would knock on your door the soonest.

Well, when I'm broke, it doesn't really matter to me because i am still a student. However if i want some money for entertainments like to watch a movie or to go shopping, i would try to earn some by writing on mylot ALOT and i also write for some other websites which pays me for it. I also try to save the money i have left by eating from home instead of following my friends to fancy restaurants.
