I would honestley have to say what I have learned from crunches over the years. They have the ability to strain and injure your back especially if done on a hard surface. They do target your abs, however you need to focus on your entire core if you want to not be caused pain and gain better stability. What I'm trying to say simply put is do crunches on a surface that is not hard as a rock, also do exercises that will help to strengthen your obliques and lower back. The Obliques will really help if you want to develop more definiton in your abs. There are thousands of core exercises out there, using only one may work, however using more than one and isolating specific parts of your core will help you develop an overall stronger body. Best of luck with your ab development and adventures.

I would say yes...if done properly. But, you know there are other ways to work the ab out. I do hula hoop and skip rope. They're very helpful in toning the midsection. Try it too.

Maybe your not doing the crunches properly. You can check videos in youtube on how to do the abwork out properly. There are so many techniques you'll be amazed. Also, in order to get abs, you also need to have a proper diet. You can't just eat and eat. It needs both exercise and disciple in food. Hope this helps!
