I have been researching for solutions to my Shih tzu's excessive flaking. It's been going on for more than a year now. He started losing fur, as well. I tried different medicated shampoos. Those with coconut oil, oatmeal and others that remedies itchiness but nothing seems to work. I was able to talk to another dog owner and he suggested that when I shampoo my dog, I better dilute the shampoo on water first before massaging onto my pet's body. I did that, but I don't think that was even the problem.
He's allergic to chicken so I already stopped giving him anything with it as an ingredient and I am very careful reading labels. I also stopped giving him grains and I never fed him anything with eggs, fish nor any seafood.
I already brought him to a vet a few times and they can't tell what's causing it. Right now, I don't even have extra to spend to pay another visit to a vet that helps in solving the concern. So, am hoping someone from here can suggest anything.

Maybe that your dog is allergic to some food.. if this...you'll notice the changes.
May be it allergic to some fabric, cloth,wool...You will have to observe.
There is a blood test that detects any possible allergy but i dont know if it works to animals.
The veterinarian should have guided you..

That's actually the problem. I went to the vets a few times but couldn't tell anything specific. They did the skin test and all but still found nothing. They even had to do it twice. They said they're gonna call when the result is out but never heard from them since. I hope to find a really good vet. He's still shedding a lot. And he has more flakes now.

I like that kind of cute doggie. Well, in answering your questions, I believe there can be two factors that causes the current condition. One would be the doggie's diet. You need to be really careful when feeding your doggie especially this type of doggie which seems to have a weaker body. One thing I learnt from my previous experience with the same species of dog would be food which is not suitable. Do not feed it with salty food as it would make their fur falls and they would get sick. You should start feeding it with quality dog food.
The second factor is sickness. Search for some really experienced and good veterinars to have a look at your doggie. If there are any of them who specialized in this type of dog then go for it.

That's something new. Thankies. I didn't know that salty food can cause hair fall. Now, at least, I will be very careful what to give my dog. I started giving him two variants of dog food. Vitality that's beef and lamb flavored and Hollistic that's lamb and rice. The latter one helped him a couple of months ago regaining his fur. He was almost covered until I started giving him another dog food only because the store where I bought the Hollistic from is a bit far from where I live. While the one I gave him for two months I bought only from across the street. But, well, it's a lesson learned.
