Is it safe to keep refilling recycled water bottles?

We only have 2 water pitchers in the fridge. Its not a very big fridge, and we can't put in too many things in it. If we buy large water bottles from outside, and got to bring it home, we would use it as water containers by just refilling it. We also recycle those big soda plastic bottles as water containers. How long can I keep on refilling it with water, before I need to just throw them away?

It is not safe t re use soda bottle for long time as water container because the plastic molecules eventually torn as time goes causing some side effects to our body because of the toxin. Worst, it can result into cancer. I think it is better to use it for a month only. If, I were you, I will get the bottled soda and use it for water storage in the fridge.

Hhmm..yeah, a month could be good enough. But, aren't water pitchers also made of plastic. What difference does it make?

I have bought a couple of glass water jugs for that purpose and never buy plastic bottles which are usually not recyclable. Of course the plastic can change from country to country, but I have even started to use glass containers for some of the food I keep at the freezer, specially if the have too much acid content.

Oh, really? Well, if its only you in the house, and no chance for accidents, then that would be a smart choice. Right now, I can't afford to have things made of glass or porcelain or anything that could easily fall and break because of the kids. Even our plates and drinking glasses our made of hard plastic. Later on, however, probably in 8 years or so, we would invest on more durable glasswares.

I use plastic bottle to contain water right now but for sure cold water only. It is not good for hot water, for sure. I think it doesn't harm...Some time i have a new bottle, then i throw the old one because i just need maximum 3 bottles only.

That's also what I do. When we have a new set of bottles, I would tell our helper to throw the old ones and replace them. It also keeps the fridge from being too loaded with water bottles. And, yes, we only use it for cold water. We have a thermos pot for hotwater.

I remember a few years back learning that your not suppose to refill water bottles because they contain chemicals that are bad for your body. They are normally use for 1 time only and even when you take a sip some of the water gets back washed in to the bottle and it puts chemicals in your body but it's not as bad as refilling it. Any time I've had water bottles even big soda bottles after I'm dong with them I throw them away some times we use them to put grease in from when we cook because you can't pour grease down the sink it does something to the pipes and dish washer.

No the logo on it is for you to put it in to the recycling bin to be recycled and used as other plastic products.

So I guess the recycle logo on these bottles are not for that purpose, then.

Probably. There is a tv program here who is promoting their advocacy to help schools in the provinces to get new armchairs. So they collect empty plastic bottles from different places around the country and run games and prizes to those who would participate. Then those bottles were converted in to plastic chairs that they deliver to the needy schools.

Hi friend, we too use the cool drinks bottle in our fridge to store the water, there is nothing wrong in recycling the cool drinks bottle to store the water, but recycle it soon and use another bottle, we will use the same bottle for around 2 months, after that we change new set of bottles

I do not know how many days before you throw out used plastic bottles, but I read some article a long time ago that using recycled plastic bottle can contaminate the water inside and can cause chemical poisoning, the symptoms maybe immediate but it will soon be seen after prolong use. Stay healthy, Good day and God bless

Whoah..but bottles have a recycle logo that indicates it can be reused. I would throw away those that are already showing signs of water stain and just out of gut feel on whether or not its still clean and good to use again.

I used to do that to until I read that washing soda bottles and things like that leaches chemicals into your drinks and can cause cancer. Something about the heat makes the plastic break down putting toxins in your drinks. So I bought sports bottles and things like that which are safe to use over and over again without causing problems.

Oh my.. good thing ive gotten rid of all the soda plastic bottles a couple months before. And, I wouldn't get on the habit again. What we have now are a couple pitchers and a couple juice bottles. I could probably keep those juice bottles for a month and then replace them with a new set.

You would need to look for something made of a newer plastic that says BPA free. Many containers have started switching to this since you originally posted this. I would refill them a few times unless you know they are BPA free and then recycle them as they accumulate germs and are hard to clean

It is not safe, why? It can lead to carcinoma or cancer. There are chemical substances that needs to throw the bottles. You can check the seal on some plastic bottles.

What should I look for on the seal?
