Any tips on what to do with black beans?

My husband went food shopping the other day and bought 12 cans of black beans (they were on sale and you had to buy 12). So I am trying to come up with recipes that incorporate black beans! We make the traditional black beans and rice, but beyond that, I don't have a clue. Any suggestions? Thanks!

In the Philippines we used it to make halo-halo,which is mixed with crushed ice, milk, and sugar--delicious!!!!You can still add more ingredients but that is for your own preparations.

I think that is a sure amazing thing to try something you have never tried. You would surely love the taste of it.The milk that is great for it is Alpine evaporated milk.

I have never heard of this--is it a drink, or more like a pudding or spread? And what type of milk is generally used? My husband's family is from the Philippines. I will chat with them and see if they have a "family" recipe for halo-halo that I can try. Thanks for the tip!

you can either use evaporated milk or condensed milk (omit the sugar if you do) for the halo halo :) maybe you can try an asian dish instead, some asian dishes (like chinese dishes) use black beans a lot :D in japan i think they also use black beans which they sweeten up and make into a paste for filling up bread or mochi :) or you can also try a mexican vegetarian like stew recipe (i forgot what it was called) from what i remember they use black beans along with corn (kernels), carrots, celery, tomatoes(preferably fresh without the skins, save the juice from the seeds and strain it over the soup after boiling/before serving to give it a more refreshing twist) then add some lime/lemon before serving! it's really tasty! :)

It is delicious in a simple salad. You have to boil it like for a soup, just when it gets boiled you have to remove the water and put oil inside, vinegar and onion. I love this type of salad. We call it black beans or colored beans also. Many people make it on stews, with tomatoes and other vegetables mixed together, but I love it most in salad.

Sounds great--I will try it! I sometimes just put plain black beans in a garden-type salad, but this sounds even better, and light for the summer. Thanks!

I am sure you will love it. I actually explained how you can make it if the beans is row, but just now I read that you bought it already canned, which means boiled, right? Then if it's already boiled you only have to put onion, oil, vinegar and salt. That's all. I thought I read packages somewhere, but I actually missed the word "can".

Yes, he got them at a supermarket "can-can" sale, so I assume that means they have already been boiled, or at least softened. i would probably still heat them up first though, just to be sure, then rinse them and let them cool. It sounds like a very tasty salad.

You can use black beans in almost any recipe which requires kidney beans or pinto beans, though black or turtle beans do have a different flavour and texture. There are some good suggestions here: http://busycooks.about.com/od/startwithseries/a/blackbeans.htm and they also work well for refried beans and black bean soup. 12 cans of black beans means that you don't have to use them all at once, so they should last you quite a while. Beans are exceedingly healthy and full of protein. Together with corn/maize, they were the staple diet of the Aztecs and other South American peoples who ate very little meat (by comparison with what most people eat today).

Thanks for the tips--and the history! Beans were eaten by northern Native Americans too (corn, beans, and squash, the "Three Sisters") but I don't know if they were black beans. I know they are very healthy (that's why my husband decided to buy so many--we are trying to eat better). I do actually know how to make a black bean soup too, but I have never used canned beans, only dried. But I guess canned would work as well. I will check out the link and see what recipes they have as well. Bon apetit!

yes, this seems to be how many people eat them, so I am going to try it. Maybe I will just use black beans first and then try to add in others.

Try to check online the way colombias and venezuelan make their awesome black bean disshes. THen there are the refritos, the mexican style. You can make tacos and tortillas with them asfer you spice them. I never use canned legumes but soak them and put them to boil, so I don`t know if they will taste the same.

I think the Brazilians have a black bean meal too that is pretty yummy--I will look into all of them. The Mexican style (or at least Tex-Mex) is the type I am most used to and will definitely use a can or two in my next taco or quesadilla meal.

Chicken quesadillas with black beans and salsa is really good and healthy, especially if you use the whole wheat or multi-grain wraps rather than the regular tortilla wraps. There is also a pork dish that I made in the crockpot ... my mom calls it "port stew" but it is a tomato based dish rather than a water based "stew" ... and I cook it with pinto beans, black beans and black-eyed peas.

Both sound delicious--I think I will try the quesadillas first--I am sure my kids will eat those (especially if I put cheese on them, too!). Thanks for the great suggestions!

Chili is one of the things that immediately comes to mind. Another idea would be to use them in salsa (add some tomatoes, corn, jalapeno, etc.). You could also use them in burritos or turn them into black bean burgers. Hmm... All of this talk of food is making me hungry.

Did not think about chili--we usually use red or kidney beans, but black beans might be tasty! Salsa is a good idea too. I will have to find a recipe for black bean burgers, and try that out as well. Who knows--maybe the kids will even eat them that way!!!
