Dog Sitting!

I am dog sitting for a friend for the weekend. Baby girl got here the day before yesterday. She is close to still being a puppy. She is house trained but she chews up my kids stuffed animals. It's not a huge deal but the problem is my dog is now copying this behavior when she has never done that before! Other than that the dog is really good and she is so cute! I just don't want this to continue once she leaves... Will my dog stop doing this once Baby Girl leaves? Do most dogs copy other dog's behavior??

Every dog learns by copying other dogs' behavior. It is written in their genes. I'm afraid your dog will continue to do that even after Baby Girl leaves, unless he does just only from jealousy. Dogs can show their jealousy toward other dogs and this could be the cause of his actions. After Baby Girl leaves, see if he continues to chew your kids' stuffed toys. If he does, you have to eliminate this habit by telling him no every time he starts chewing any toy.

Oh that isn't good, do you have a crate you can put the dog in when you can't watch her? Look at it this way, your children have rules to follow in the house, if they brought in friend's who misbehave, wouldn't you take action and explain that kind of behavior is not accepted in your home? When I dog sit for my daughter, the only thing thing Menchi is allowed to do that my girls can't is get on the furniture. That is because Menchi is a small miniature poodle, so she weighs about 10 pounds and doesn't shed, like my girls who weigh close to 50 pounds and shed a lot. But as for chewing, or making a mess on the floor, if Menchi did that, I would treat her like my own, tell her no and then put ehr in the crate if I am not able to watch her.

I don't know about bad behavior, but I know my girls act like sister's when it comes to jealousy. Can't talk or touch one without the other pushing her way in..lol

My dog did the same thing when Baby girl was here. Whenever one got attention the other one wanted in too. Lol. They were both SO jealous!

Yeah it was bad but she left today and my dog has only chewed on her own toys. I guess my dog thinks its cool or something to copy other dogs. I have no idea. She went right back to the way she always is and played with her toys again. I wonder if in doggy language they encourage each other to do bad things at times like kids do! Lol. She is being good now though so no more worrying about that behavior! Phew. =)

I do not know if it will continue or not. You may have to give your dog her own toys and temporarily put something on your kids' toys she does not like, like hot sauce. Make sure the toys are washable though.

Yeah, my dog has her own toys that she loves but the other dog did not like my dogs toys apparently. She left today though and my dog has not chewed anything except for her own toys! Thank God! =)

I guess to me it sounds like learned behavior....I would put the stuffed animals up until she leaves......give them something hard like a frisbee to chew on.

Yeah it definitely was my dog copying what she was doing. She left today though and my baby is back to HER toys that she knows she is allowed to chew. Thank God! I did not need that all the time. =)

I have tried this. It's last summer when my friend who is also a mylotter is one of her cousin's wedding bridesmaid. She checked for the nearest hotel dog in our area but the place is under construction by that time. So, she asked if I can dog sit her dogs. They're huge dogs actually, a black chow chow and a collie. The dogs knows me already because I often visited this mylotter and play with the dogs. My kids loves those dogs as well- so we don't have trouble taking of them. It was fun indeed and exciting for my kids taking care of huge dogs.

Aw, that is so nice you watching another lotters dog for them! =) Yeah the one I am watching is a pitbull. She is really sweet but man she is bad about chewing. We have dog toys but she keeps getting my kids toys! Ugh! I do love her though, she is sweet and she gets along great with my kids and my dog.

Dogs by nature are considered pack animals. They always look to follow a leader. So your dog is obviously looking at the other dog and following that ones behavior. You are the master of your dog. Your dog should listen t no one but you. You are and should be considered the pack leader when it comes to the dogs. So you have to teach your dog who the boss is.

She must have been excited and also marking her territory. Dogs do that to unfamiliar people and animals. But its good that the dog is back to normal.

Yeah she was following her behavior. My dog is very submissive so she follows what other dogs do. She does listen to me but whenever I walked outside or anything they were both chewing on my kids toys. Thank God my dog has stopped doing it now that Baby girl went home. She is back to herself, listening like she always does. =)

i've heard from a friend that it's actually possible for other dogs to copy another dog's misbehavior especially when the dogs arent reprimanded for a misdeed (your dog might get an idea that what the "guest dog" was doing is ok since you did not reprimand the "guest dog" if it did something you did not like). maybe you should keep a close eye on both and try to impose your house rules on both dogs :) just my opinion :)

Well I do tell her in a stern voice no and take it away but I can't do anything else with her to stop it. She is not my dog. My dog is copying the behavior but since she has never done this before I am hoping it will stop once Baby Girl leaves...

You are right most dogs copy the other dog's behaviour like if one dog start barking then other all dog is started. In front of my home 3 to 4 dogs are sitting in morning and evening time because they knows they will get the meals(chapati). We are daily serve the chapati to them.

yeah it is possible that your dig might copy the girl behavior as you said that your dog is already doing it. But if you know how to control your dog, then he might not do the same. Keep a check on him. happy dog sitting.

Yeah, I just didn't know if most dogs do this or not. My dog is trained, we are pretty strict with her so I am hoping once the other dog leaves she will be herself again and not do this anymore.
