I have noticed, that whenever a family or relatives go for a meal in a restaurant. They always asked for a "doggy bag" from the leftovers of their meals, supposedly for their pets at home. What do you think about this? Is it an appropriate things to do?

I do not think there is anything wrong with that since it is the left overs from the food that you have eaten.

I do agree with you. As long as it is not a spoiled food, then we can still consume it. At some point, it is also tastier if the spices in it had sunk into certain meals.

@Shavkat I find it a good thing because then the food isn't going to waste. So much food is waste that it's not even funny. It's actually sad how wasteful people can be while many people are starving.

That's the reason why I can't understand that some people waste food and throw it easily in a trash bin. At least, we still have the sense of knowing what is right or wrong with such concern.

I do it sometimes, even if I am trying to feed the pup with better food than ours. But I truly hate throwing food. Specially when I have paid double price for ingredients and preparing in the restaurant. I know that such leftovers might be probably used in the restaurant too, most of the places give the leftovers to homeless animals, but not all of them. Our pup eats high quality dry food for puppies. But I share with it also some things prepared without too much salt, spices or sweet.

My mother owns a restaurant, and we've never minded people wanting to take things home, for their pets or otherwise. I think it's a compliment, it means the food was good enough for another meal. I actually have had dogs for years, so I do try and take something home for the little ones. If I'm paying for a meal, and I choose to not finish it, or just can't finish it, the food is still mine and I should be able to take it home should I want.

I think it depends on the person or the group. When my family dines out, there are times when we order too much. Being a very thrifty family, bringing home the uneaten food (often large amount of the dish) is a convenience. Sometimes, the food is really fed to the pets while there are also times when they are treated as leftovers. Some families like mine don’t like to be excessive towards food since we consider it a blessing. Besides, there are times that a family member just wants to eat restaurant food all over again.

If I have a lot of food left over I'll ask for a box for it so that I can have the rest of it later as a snack or maybe lunch. I've never brought home leftovers specifically for my dogs. I never really knew, but I guess that's why they call it "doggy bag", because people would take the leftovers home for their dogs lol.

I think it is fair ask for a doggy bag and take leftover food from restaurants. Restaurants and customers alike benefit. - Waste is reduced restaurant. - Restaurants can work with sponsors to create a doggy bag. - Customers can save pet dog food. I do not know if this becomes a tradition, which is wrong.

Well, the same thing, I also noticed that I am on vacation in Piombino (Tuscany, Italy). But this sign of "doggy bag", I have not ever seen in restaurants, but rather in the various shops, where they held out a bowl of water and some food for our beloved pets. The fact that people go on vacation with their dog, has never been easier. I take the example to bring the dog to the beach, you have to go into special beaches, often out of reach from a crumbling look!

For the lower class yes but those who have a lot will not bother at all... So, if the customer is a rich one they will not ask for a doggy bag but for middle and lower class it is very important for them and it will save them the next meal. Anyway, there is nothing wrong in asking the waiter to wrap the leftover foods, you have paid for it and you have the right to ask for them.

I believe that in France, it's a no-no to bring a doggy bag because it is deemed offensive because it will indicate that their culinary effort is worthy only as pet food. You know, the French held their cuisine in high esteem. I hope this helps.
