A Matter of Avoidance

I am sure that for many of you it will come as a complete surprise that we are in an Olympics year. Apparently this year, for two weeks from this coming Friday there will be running and jumping, sailing and swimming and a whole load of other things mostly in the east end of London. Already British TV is hyping up the fact that for a very small percentage of people they are going to be able to overdose on sport. The sort of sport that most people never bother watching but because it has an Olympic tag it suddenly becomes compulsive TV viewing. I do not begrudge those people that wish to spend their days and nights viewing scantily clad young people exerting themselves. Indeed when I was younger there were lots of cinemas that showed movies like that in London - for over 18s only! However, what I am wondering is what is there to entertain those of us that are not remotely interested in the Olympics. What will you be doing instead of watching the sport fest?

Putting curses on anyone who mentions the O word. Not watching TV. Asking Auntie Beeb if I can have my licence fee back. I hate sport and with that and Mrs the Queens jubilee, telly has been repeats and Big Brother. It's a good thing I've got lots of books. I might even try reading War and Peace, it can't be as boring as sport.

Ha ha! If it is still hot I will be spending as much time as possible outside. And as it's the summer holidays we will probably be running after children. :)

I'm NOT a fan of the Olympics myself!!! I've WiFied my house & added a Roku to my TV. Anytime I don't like what's on TV, I turn on a movie of my choice or an old series of a show that I used to adore. I've now seen every episode of Major Dad & most of Kojak!!! Yes, they are simpler than current TV shows & more family driven; but I enjoy them more!!! So, there will be NO scantily clad young people exerting themselves on my tele!!!

No way! Ironically, when something big happens in London, I find myself at a Serbian restaurant, or sone other Serb cultural event, even though I'm not Serbian.
Will & Kate's wedding
Had to fill out firms with my accountant only a few blocks from a Serb restaurant in Kitchener.
Queen's Jubilee
Conference in Kitchener near Serb restaurant, so decided to eat dinner there.
Opening ceremonies of Olympics
Opening ceremonies at Serbian food festival! Three days of drinking, eating, drinking, dancing, drinking, music, and did I mention drinking!? lol
If you want to avoid hype in London, move to Kitchener ON.

He's also a city in Ontario about 1.5 hours west of Toronto! Serbian food is a mix of Greek, Russian, Turkish, and German. Drink lots of Sljivovica, and your head will grow three sizes!

I don't know if she still does, but when my sister was swimming competitively, she watched all the swimming competitions she could - that was the year that Mark Spitz won all those golds. That he won the butterfly was special for her because that was her strongest event.
I, however, only had eyes for the horse jumping events.

However it is great that now London is being focused throughout the world for Olympics. As a British you should feel proud.

Today I listened BBC News. BBC reported that British people are divided over Olympics. Some people say, Olympics created pressure on British economy. Normal tourists will avoid this time. The visitors are now busy with games. They are not interested in buying things. But the restaurant owners and jewelers think in Olympics time their sales will be increased.

According to the serious but weird person talking about European economics on the news, the Olympic games are good for British economy, whereas the day of for the Queens birthday was bad. As is the weather, but then I think the weather in Northern Europe this summer is just generally bad.

Hello my friend p1kef1sh Ji,
To be frank at this junction of mine, when I was never facinated with sports and I am not at all a research scholar on sports, having lot many pass-time alternatively, I will never restrict other than news covering up sports. It would be just sufficient for me to know about Medal tally.
May God bless You and have a great time

Olympics really? This year? I had no idea!
I will most likely be doing what I do the rest of the time which is avoiding the TV unless my football team is playing or the MotoGP is on. I will be competing in sport this weekend, watching my son compete and enjoying the sunshine, going for walks, reading books, chatting with friends online. Olympics...bah humbug!
I would like to watch some of the archery as I do it as a sport, but realistically, it is not likely to get TV coverage as it is as boring as watching paint dry to watch! They would prefer to televise heat after heat of people swimming from one side of the pool to the other over and over and over and over again!

Two weeks? It's nearly 3 weeks, as it started today and ends on Sunday 12th. It didn't start in the East of London though, I think it started in Cardiff.
As for scantily clad young people, I'm not sure what kind of boring sports you're thinking off, I prefer the ones with people with clothes on :-) Also helmet, boots and spurs, but hopefully not bow-ties. Many of them can't really be called young either, the oldest one is 71 I think. Don't care much for the sports were they run around on their own, especially not if the involve a team and a ball. I might be tempted to view some of the more unusual ones, just because we don't get to see them too often.
As for what to do, as long as you don't live right in the middle of it (in which case it might get a bit annoying), then just continue with the "usual programming". Possibly avoid too much news sendings as they will be filled with sports. Also news papers, radio and your friends status updates, but that might be better than their usual complaints anyway :-)

I think that you will find that the opening ceremony is this coming Friday in Stratford which is in the East Dnd. i kmow that becasue I ised to live there. I am pleased that I don't now. That's what LCOG say on their website. Cardiff is the centre for football and the first preliminary matches started today.

Everybody knows that the opening ceremony is on Friday :-) But if the question is about other entertainment than sports during the games, the important dates are when the whole thing actually starts and all the channels start sending sport. In this case womens football. Which most definitly is today. Football on half of the channels today, and when it is not football, they're talking about how Britain isn't doing to well and that you can't buy chips at the Olympic stadion, except for McDonalds chips or fish and chips.

This would be out of the topic. I just heard and read somewhere about a bomb attack in the olympics in london this year. I really do pray that this will never happen and that it was only a hoax. Anyway, may the 2012 Olympics be successful as always as in the last years!

We do not watch movies much. We like tv series, particularly crime ones like Midsomer Murders. We certainly never go to the movies. I have looked at the sites that sell film on the internet but I do not like watching tv on my computer. I prefer to sit in a nice arm chair and relax watching the big screen.

I hardly ever watch DVDs and can give you no thoughts as to why. I have never been into films and can count the number that I have watched so far this CENTURY on the fingers of two hands! LOL. I have just seen The Most Exotic Marigold Hotel and loved it. I downloaded it legally from the Internet. Definitely worth a punt.

i am into sports but not one hundred percent into Olympics. i should be watching the events only on tv but not in the venues physically. but anyway, instead of watching the sports fest as you asked, i should only be spending my time with my kids and my wifey, beach picnic i guess.

Hi, p1ke......I will most likely be reading. I just started Mudwoman and have a stack of other books to get to. I'm not certain how much of the olympics will be broadcast here in the states but I'm only interested in a few of the games. I do hope and pray that things there stay safe and without incident. I know a lot of $$$ has been spent on security.

I actually have to admit that I am very much so looking forward to the start of the Olympics. Now for me it isn't that I am only interested in sports every fourth year. I was raised in a family that was very sports oriented and because of that, I love sports. I was a swimmer when I was a child and swam on the high school swim team, so swimming is something that I always enjoy. Both of my children are gymnasts and though they will never reach the elite level, they both love watching elite gymnasts. We will be watching the Olympics, not avoiding them.

I am definitely one of those people that is "eh" about the Olympics. When I was younger I enjoyed the ice skating bit of the winter Olympics but that's about it. It's become more about politics than sports and athletics in some cases that it's not even remotely interesting to me anymore. I, personally, will probably be making use of Netflix to avoid all the OMG GOLD FOR OUR COUNTRY fest on the television, either that or leaving my husband to enjoy it and holing up in my bedroom with a book, or on my computer with the Sims 3.
