Killer or mental patient

We read about a young man who killed at least 12 people and injured many more. At first we know nothing about him, it apears that he just lost his mind and started shooting. But as we learn more we find this crime was well planned in advance. When you first heard about it what did you think? Hubby felt it must have been something to do with school, someone had given him bad news and he felt so bad that he started killing people. I heard someone else blame the movie that was being shown that night for the first time. I couldn't begin to guess and had to wait for more information. Now we know more and I still don't know, I think, if I guess, it must be something mental. How do you react when you here something like this. Do you try to explain it or do you just feel sad? Are you a CSI fan? Are these shows changing our mental reaction to these terrable crimes?

I think that these shows do actually put things in a different perspective for people sometimes. I don't know if it desensitized us or educated us...maybe a little of both. I saw that on the news that his mom was a nurse at a psychiatric hospital. The reporter said that her response was not one of surprise. That she actually told them that they had the "right guy." I think there was definitely more to it than first thought.

Thanks for the best response. There is often more to most every story than we see at first.

It's too early to make any good theories but from what I know he planned it for weeks and maybe months. That, to me, weakens his possible argument for diminished mental capacity. There is evil in the world and it's time we acknowledged it as a real presence, not just some ethereal thing with no physical affect. This man is evidently evil, as far as I know. He should be put away forever and never be a free man again. I like crime shows but I'm of a generation that is capable of separating reality from fiction. In the past 20-30 years children have been raised glued to TVs or video games that become their preferred reality and I honest think a lot of them can't completely distinguish or adjust to what is real. They prefer the movies or games and life is just an inconvenient interruption. They are disengaged from reality and I think this encourages violence in people who are prone to it--it might tip them over the edge into their fantasy world where they can take action and they are truly surprised when they reap the consequences. One of the most horrible things about it is that he sent his psychiatrist a package, some are saying a journal that outlined his plans. It sat in the mailroom undelivered until days after the massacre.

Wow that is something i did not know, that he sent his plan to his psychiatrist. This further conveniences me that he should be disposed of, Actually he is not worth the price OF A TRIAL. he has to be really nuts ,and I don't think he should be able to claim insanity, he knew what he was doing and had planned to do.

I am a simple person. When I hear about things like this happening, I dont really care who he is or why he did it. I think he should simply be taken out of society for good. Whether being locked in jail, locked in a mental hospital or executed. We should never have to think about him again. I abhor the fact that these people become famous through their actions.

From what I understand with this case is that that kid was going to therapy for a while. I think he had a bad home life and a bad relationship with his parents. Also e was more like a loner. I am sure it is something mental with this guy. I doubt it has anything to do with school.

From the excerpts from the trial and the different tidbits I saw from his life, I do think he's mental. Like... in the sense he has an insanely immense mental insanity slash disease. I think there's a difference between someone who is mental in a way that they are completely sane with a wicked world view whoch causes murder and someone just batsh.t crazy, and I think the guy is the latter one. I know it must be so hard for the relatives of the victims if he is not sentences to prison as a "revenge" for them, but if psyhological examinations show that he has a mental disease, hence he could not be responsible for his deeds mentally, I think he should be cured at an asylum. Also, I just don't understand how the people around him didn't help him with his insanity... people are so ignorant and indifferent. We know nothing about people who live around us, let alone help them, before something like this could happen. Poor 6-year old kid, what has she done to deserve this fate? :(.

And I actually like CSI shows, but just because of the investigation process. I think they are harmless as long as the person who's watching it is 1) mentally stable, 2) has a complete, complex, finished worldview (so I wouldn't let kids watch it).

Hi friend, sad to hear about this news, really the person is having some mental issues, so only he did this thing. May be some deep sorrow or incident made him to be violent, whatever it is this kind of persons are deserved for punishment. If i heard this kind of news, i will feel a lot for the lost people and pray for their soul to RIP. I don't think more about the killer, as he is not deserved for our thoughts

I would have to say this is an untreated mental patient turned killer. Clearly he had some sort of mental issue that was left untreated or unrecognized and this is what came of it unfortunately. A lot of times people with a mental illness are very good at hiding it, so it's really no surprise that he wasn't treated in the first place. My logic could be way off here but this is how I see it, there really is no explaining it unless someone can read what was going through this guys head at the time that it happened.

I am not a fan of crime shows. Hubby watches them from time to time. I personally just feel so sad. I always feel like there is a mental issue about similar crimes. I am not totally sure crimes like these can be explained. Shows that feature crime and mayhem, or books that do the same tend to desensitize people.

To have been able to take the time to plan out the crime that he committed and to have not driven himself crazy before he even had the opportunity to fulfill all of his plans, I would say that this man definitely does have to have some kind of personality disorder. However, I also think that despite the fact that the criminal in this situation is definitely a person that is mentally ill does not negate the fact that he should never be allowed in the general population again in his life. This is something that holds true not just as a free person, it is also something that I believe holds true in jail or the mental institute that he ends up in as well.

it doesn't really matter if he was sane or insane when he did the crime. he should still be punished. a lot of criminals get away with their crimes because they pretend to be mentally ill. it is so sad and i feel so bad for the victims and their families. if only it was controlled but then it was well planned. there is no one to be blamed but that killer. in some point, i also think there should have been police men or security guards at the fire exit where he entered. My prayers and condolences to the victims and their families.

People snap out of their senses if they have mental illness, then it progresses to being a psychopathologic condition. If it was not treated immediately.

it's a terrible crimes.now a lot of killer are mental patient. they don't have health spirit so they can do some terrible things like killing a lot of people, a good spirit people can't kill a lot of people or do some crazy things. if someone are mental patient, they will think society is so bad that everyone is bad and he can't live in a so dark society. so they choose to kill people. that's terrible. innocent people can be killed by mental patien. i feel so sad and i wish the numuber of such killer will decrease and our life is safer

I think he may be off his rocker but he needs to be put away like a mad dog. he can never be rehabilitated,so that anyone could trust him again. and why should we support him in one of our padded cell prisons. This whole thing was pre-planned and laid out over a period of time, not insane. He just has a criminal mind.
