Some of the elementary schools in my country have introduced a new idea. After the summer holidays when the students return there will be no more homework. Some schools have decided to abolish homework, and there are several reasons behind their decision.
Today some students do their homework and some students don't do their homework and the teachers think that it would be easier to plan the lessons if they abolish homework. If there is no homework there are no students who haven't read the books, and they are going to read the books during the lessons instead. That way everyone will be able to participate in the discussions etc.
They also think that a system without homework is more fair because some students have parents who are able to help them with their homework and some students have parents who aren't able to help them. When there is no homework everyone is equal.
I am not sure what to think about the suggestion. I wonder if there will really be enough time to read everything during the lessons? What do you think about a school without homework?

I really don't think homework adds anything to the education experience. When I was in school, I just did all my homework as fast as possible, put it away and forgot about it till the teacher asked for it. It's supposed to allow the parent to be more interactive with their children's school work, but many parents don't have the patience for it, and it winds up becoming a nightmare for the child. I think it's an interesting idea and might just make the teachers work easier.

Homework took me roughly 15 minutes to accomplish and that was the end of it. If you truly want a student to practice at home, you have to come up with a better way to get them to do it.

I must admit that I often looked at homework the same way when I was a student. I did my homework, but I just wanted to finish it as fast possible so that I could move on to another activities. I think that many students feel the same way. They do their homework because they would get in trouble if they didn't do it and not because they enjoy it or because they think that they are going to benefit from it. I don't know how the schools without homework are going to turn out as it is still a very new idea, but it could be interesting to read the evaluation when they have tried it.

I think at the younger ages it would work better as kids are like sponges when they are younger. As the students get older it may be necessary to practice more.

To students, homework has pros and cons. Some students can practice what they learned in the school and improve themselves. However, not all the students can get a progress in the homework. They can be tired and even hate homework. In my opinion, homework is just a means of promoting students to study hard.If all the students can make good use of their time at home, that's unnecessary.

I think that a lot of students would be very happy if there was no homework, because they are tired when they return to their home and they told feel like spending the rest of the day on homework. When I was a student I didn't really enjoy homework either, and I would have prefered to spend the time on other things. Now some schools in my country have decided to introduce schools without homework. I will follow the schools and see how those schools turn out.

Homework is another added thing to enhance the mind of the students. But sometimes it is also another thing to make the student tired and stress. I think teachers can give home works but everyday so that the student can have more time to the other things like reviewing for the exam or making some school projects.

It is true that homework can add stress to lives of the students and make them tired. That is one of the reason why some schools have chosen to abolish homework. They think that they students are already tired from a long and busy day at school and they it will be stressful for the students to spend hours on homework when they return to their homes. They want to the students to rest and get ready for the next day at school instead of studying all night. The students still have to study for tests and exams of course, but their everyday lives will be less stressful.

yeah i like schools that don't have homework. you know, some schools always give their students too much homework to finish. so after they have took their many classes, it is time to relax themselves, but they have to spend all time on homework. i think students should study hard, but it doesn't mean that you must finish a lot of homework everyday. if students don't have homework, they will have more own time to study what they really interested, that is really helpful.

Yes, that is a very common situation. The students spend a lot of time at the school and when they return to their home they have to spend many hours on their homework, and that leaves very little time for other activities. I was in that situation when I want to high school, because I had chosen a school where you finish high school in two years instead of the three years. I didn't have time for anything but school and homework and it was quite hard. If I had to make the decision today I wouldn't have chosen to finish high school in two years. I look forward to hearing about the schools without homework and whether they will become a success.

I think not having homework is a good thing because like porcospino said some parents can help/do their kid's homework. Eliminating homework in general and just having in school work, would make learning more even and maybe even give the children who need more help the help they need. Th Teachers can recognize the need where as maybe during homework they wont because the kid will have help. I wish I didnt have homework when I went school.

Hi and welcome to Mylot!
Yes, some parents help their children and some parents don't help their children because they don't have time or because they don't understand the assignments. If there is no homework the students are even and their parents' help or lack of help don't affect their situation. It is also true that it will be easier for the teachers to see if the students need help or not. If students get a lot of help from their parents the teachers might get the impression that the students know things that they don't actually know, and it will be harder to evaluate the students properly.

This situation won't happen in my country, and I believe of that. There the saying gose, when you spend one hour to learn sth new,it will take you two hours to absorb and review. Homework plays an imortant role in one's study. Not everyone is clever enough to handle what they have been taught in class. What's more, we can get new ideas when we let the knowledge go through our minds again and again.

I didn't think that it was going to happen in my country either and I was surpriced to read about the schools that have decided to introduce this idea. It will definately be a very different way to learn. When I was a student homework was a big part of the lessons and I am not quite sure how they are going to change the lessons now that there is no homework. I would imagine that it would be difficult for the students to learn all of the things that they have to learn during the lessons, but I guess we will have to wait and see how it will turn out. The idea is still new, and the first schools without homework will start this year.

I am from an era in elementary school(and high school for that matter) when homework was important and was assigned for every class. I got no help from my parents even though both had college degrees. It was very useful for learning more than there was time to be presented in class and for gauging how a student was progressing. Then when I was in college all the these new theories of education starting being introduced here in the U. S. As a major in physics, I taught labs. Many of these were for elementary education majors and the class on general science and the labs I taught that went along with the class was the only exposure to science that these majors got. The education department decreed that for the lab part, if a student just attended the class and did nothing, they had to get a passing grade for the lab. They said if this wasn't done, they would drop the science requirement completely. Similar things were true at other universities. These "new" eduction methods that were propagated in the 1970s are a big part of why the U. S. has been slipping in math and science ever since. Then a few years later when I was in the Army, a buddy of mine had a wife who was teaching in a local high school. The instructions there were that no more homework for all the classes combined could be assigned than what a student could do in the one hour study period that each student had during the school day. When I was in high school we had classes throughout the school day and had no such study periods. Homework is important and should be a major part of education.

Porco, i think if those schools had decided to abolished homework, they will need to lengthen the time for studies. So, they are able to implement time for homework as well as time for normal study. By doing this way, children will have enough time to relax at home. The children don't have to feel stressful, since not every parents have the time to teach them to do their homework. On the bad side is, some children when given too much freedom, will tend to spend their time into useless activities. If only parents are taking good care of their children, then of course it won't happened that way. As for my area here, everyday i still need to spend time helping and guiding my son to do his homework. The teacher won't allow him to do his homework at school, since there are lots of things they are studying daily. Besides that, their study time is very short, only half day lesson.

Hi Porcospino.
I think if there no home work its will great. If I see from my living experience, sometimes its hard to do homework when no one there to help you understand the lesson. My parent usually busy at the store and when lesson getting harder they can not help any more because they never learn about it.
I home work sometimes made school not fun and made many students stree because its force you to keep studying all day even when you are not at school. I meant we usually spent 7 hours at school and I think its more than enough. We need to do any thing beside study.

No homework means more time to review for examinations and quizzes. From what I heard homework is abolished in Finland and they are number 1 in the world when it comes to education. do remember a time where you have examinations, unit test and quizzes but you lost time for reviewing because you have lots of homework and project to deal with.

It is interesting to hear that the Finnish schools have abolished homework. I didn't know that. Maybe the Danish schools got the idea from Finland. Some Danish schools are going to introduce the idea from August this years when the students return from the summer holidays, so it is still a new thing and I don't know if it will become a success a not. Some people support the idea and other people are skeptical. It is true that the students have more time to study for tests and quizzes if they don't have homework and projects and that would be one of the advantages about schools without homework since it would be less stressful for the students.

There will of course be more planning required in order to make sure they fit everything in in school time.
But honestly, this would have been my dream during my school days. Children also need time to play and to practise hobbies and be with their families, and honestly I could never do such things that I wanted to do because school in the form of getting ready for school, being at school and then homework all afternoon and evening, kept me enslaved until I wanted to scream.
So I left school at 16.
So yes, I believe if you can compartementalize school so that you know when you're at school you're at school, and when you're at home you can do what need to be done at home. No school invading your time and ruining your life.

Hi friend, home work is the necessary thing for students and they must do it with their own interest, we must listen the lessons in the class and read the lesson and do the home work on the same day, it will help us to understand the lesson well, without home work students will lack their interest in studies, home work is the best tool which help the parents to share their knowledge with their kids, each and every parent must concentrated with their kids thought and attitude

I think if a school with no homework may be getting lazy students to read books. Why is that? Because setidanya for children who are not diligent, the homework does not mean they can relax. If homework persists indirectly students will read the book that he learned that way. Perhaps it would be nice if the teachers see a student's ability to abolish homework.

I am not sure that I understand what you mean. Do you mean that students will get lazy without homework or did I misunderstand that?
The idea of a school without homework is new concept in my country. I learned from this discussion that schools without homework already exist in some countries, but in my country it is new thing. The first school are going to introduce this thing next month when the students return and if it is a success other schools may do the same thing in the future.

In my country it is the same. No homework is given to students, specially primary school students. Teachers believe that students minds are tired after a whole day work and their concentration while doing homework is less. So classwork is done more as class discussion. But according to my point of view, homework must be given to students because the time allotted for one subject is not enough for a student. These students must catch up by doing homework. Homework acts as a revision, students becomes more familiar with a topic while doing a task on their own. Moreover students will indulge in watching TV, surfing on the net, listening to music, gossiping with friends. It will be better for them to do homework than indulging in such things.

As a teacher, I have mixed feelings about homework. The research is inconclusive as to whether it does help promote academic growth or not. I understand that as society changes, education needs to change as well.
That being said. My students still have one dedicated day a week for an assignment that goes home and comes back to school. I usually pick something that the students will not need outside help on and I grade it as a participation grade. If they complete it, even if it is wrong, they get full credit. We then go over the assignments together in class, and they can correct the work. The idea is to help build responsibility. Since homework has not been abolished in my school district, I feel that by not giving my students assignments to complete at home, I am doing them a disservice for when they get to the higher grades.

i dont think that homework being deleted is a good idea. I liked it when I had homeworks because it forced me to study and open my book and notebook and review what was discussed during the day. It may not add to the learning but it will enhance remembering the lesson.

I admit as a student, it is such a good thing. We will have no worries about answering those. But the only problem is, there are still some students who don't participate in class discussions.
