I kept a pan of milk on the stove and got distracted watching television for a few minutes. It was not even for a long period. The mistake I made was that I thought the stove was simmering but it was on full boil .I decided to pay a penalty but as my husband pointed out it was of no use and it is unacceptable. I am feeling miserable because I did not use my time productively too at that point of time but was just fooling around watching some stupid scene on television.
Hereafter I will never do this again. It sounds so silly but I am really feeling terrible about it.
Have you made such careless mistakes while cooking?

It seems that you are a very serious person. You couldn't allow a mistake. Or maybe your hubby is. Anyway, don't be too hard on yourself.
I burned pans and woks several times when I cooked. Sometimes because I was watching TV while cooking, or I forgot that I was boiling something while I worked on the computers. I would only regret it for a while. Accidents do happens...

No allknowing! Today he himself said 'there is no point telling you anything because you are already feeling bad and what is the use wailing over spilt milk"? He added that I very conveniently get rid of my guilt by posting this discussion here.[Of course I confess what I do because that gives me greater peace than just wiping it away silently]

I think this is a common occurrence in every household. Relax kala. Feeling terrible means that it is a rare occurrence in your house. Lucky you

In fact I did something like this just last week. I had something cooking on the stove and there was to much liquid in the pan so I wanted it to cook down. While waiting I started to read and if my nose, the smell, hadn't warned me the whole pan would have been burned and our dinner with it. It just goes to show even those of us who have been cooking for years can get distracted. Don't be to hard on yourself.

Yah, I did.
And regret is useless, but the lesson learned is a good experience.

Hiya kalav,
Most thing you can get to feel is a bit silly I think that is how you are or really could be feeling.
One in my House yesterday spilled milk all over the place in the Kitchen and it was very late at night so I just got up and cleaned it all up.
They were fussing much more than me.
Now if the Dog makes a real mess breaking things up for me because its outside and its so hot at the moment I can lose my rag a bit.
Trouble is if I keep doing that he keeps doing it even more to get my attention so I have to hold myself in check so although milk is not something you would normally spill what I find most annoying about milk is how hard it is to clean up the white marks on the floor it took me four buckets of water to get it all clean not to mention the kitchen top so that for me is a lot of waste really.
Please don´t bash yourself up for that us women do this far too often perhaps its something we learn as we grow up I really don´t know.
In England we have a saying no use crying over spilled milk. In other words what is done is done although it is annoying.
I make lots of mistakes and if I were to blame myself for everything life would not be worth living.
Cheer up kalav and take time out for yourself more often and don´t feel bad about it.
However that takes practice I can tell you.
It has taken me all this time to learn how to sit still and think of myself first although there are so many things to be done.
Now I am learning to have a bit of fun lol.

Hiya kalav,
Well it seems that I did it again but I really do not care as I cannot be into everything and do everything for everyone all the time.
So what if it got you into trouble? Have your fun kalav.
Yes about the spilled milk is a great one and also what is the use of locking the stable door when the Horse has already bolted?
You cannot do anything about it can you?xxx

My country has a saying "Do not cry over spilled milk". Feeling bad does not change it. You probably had to deal with cleaning up the mess, and if someone goes without, it likely will be you. You have learned an important lesson about paying attention while you cook. You will do better next time.

You must have heard the famous adage,'To err is humane.'You made a mistake and you have realized and accepted it as well.Such things often happen in our life.Your husband is certainly a mature person. He knows there's no point in crying over a mistake that has been done.Certainly you should not have done that, but now you have realized you have done it.What matters is this realization.Leave it.What has happened has happened. You can't revert it.So take a lesson that you have already taken and forget it.Don't harbor any guilty consciousness.Cheers!

Kala, this kind of incidents are quite common to most of the women. My wife is careful in this sort, she is using induction stove to boil the milk and cook some complicated items. Most of the time she keep the stove in sim while cooking. I too follow this way. Don't worry a lot for this, as you mentioned you don't do this activity again, that's good

It is unnecessary to be guilty just for spilling milk over, which is a common thing often happen in any homes. I often boil water till no water left in kettle. For boiling porridge, my mom even fire the boiler a hole. Now it can not be reused. hehe I need to pay more attention in future when cooking. Can not be careless.

My God! If it were my husband he would have thrown a fit and I would have had a earful for being so careless. And of course I would have to narrate it when the tale is hot and fuming.Thank God there was no serious fire accident. One neighbour of mine in my ealier town had a tenant and she had left a Banish mat burning on t he bed.The bed caught fire and there was considerable damage to the mattress though luckily no short circuit was there.

I remember an incident which I would like to share with you. On that particular day there was no one home and I had to go for some classes in the afternoon. I locked the house and when I returned there was smoke everywhere. I had left something on the gas and forgotten to put off the gas. The vessel was completely charred. No sooner my maid arrived I got the whole house sprayed with some perfume, switched on all the fans in the house and got the vessel scrubbed and by the time my husband was home everything was normal. It was only days later that I narrated the incident to hubby!

don't be too harsh to yourself dear, everybody make mistake and most of the time grave mistake. What you've done is a part of being not focus and we cannot focus at all times specially if something is grabbing our attention. We cannot say we can do all things in perfect way with no mistakes because mistakes is part of our lives, as long as you've learned from it and admit than you've done then your good to go. few people are behaving inappropriately towards their own wrong doings but you admit it religiously and that's a good thing for me. Loosen up and don't blame yourself anymore.
Have a nice day!!

Thanks a lot for the kind response dear friend. What you say is true but I have done this a good number of times earlier and though I make resolutions it won't happen again I do it again. This is why today I was really feeling bad.
I am seriously considering some alternate ways of avoiding this.

I am a very good cook. Yet, some times, when I`m mylotting, I burn potatoes and smell them when the water I used to cook them has evaporated. I just laugh, although I know that it will be difficult for me to clean the pot.
I think that you don`t have to feel guilty about it: it`s only some milk.

That always happen to be especially when I am cooking soupy meals. I always cover the pan so that when it boils the soup will spill. I don't know why because the stove heat is at lowest already. That's why my husband told me that to cover the pan too tight.

Dear Kala
Why you are taking this so seriously, as if you committed some crime, spilling of milk is so common in almost all homes of indians; well ok next time you put a metallic spoon of big size in the pan you are using to boil; the heat gets conducted and prevents spilling
Also you can use an induction heater, there is a setting in such heaters, milk wont spill; hope this helps
happy mylotting

ThankS a lot Professor. I will implement this immediately[the metallic spoon .] Actually, I have done this many times and my husband really gets irritated by the carelessness shown.I myself feel guilty because it is whole cream milk and it is so expensive here.More than half a litre was spilt.I was just distracted by some t.v. unnecessarily and due to oversight. Read the previous response.
However much money we may have, it becomes our responsibility to show the care a task deserves and it is bad to spill milk.I shall definitely make this the last time by implementing the metallic spoon inside and then getting a new milk boiler too.I may go in for the induction heater later.

Professor has given such a valuable tip to avoid spilling the milk while boiling it. This is what I was also taught by my mom and this works out well. But many times, I prefer to keep the stove in simmer flame, as I know even if I stand nearby, I would miss the second the milk boils..and then all would end up in heavy cleaning works - leave alone the milk wasted..lol....

The cleaning part is even worse than wastage.I would rather be without it than clean it up.We use metallic spoons when the quantity is in great measure like for some party or some gathering at home.now, with my carelessness there is no harm doing it on a daily basis.

Hi aunty. Would it not be better if you used a milk boiler than an ordinary vessel? I know because this happens to me ALL the time!I always stand there and keep watching the vessel but the minute I turn my back on it to do some other work even for a second, it boils over. I really got fed up and finally purchased two milk boilers so that the milk would not boil and spill over. But even now sometimes that happens in milk boilers too when there is not enough water.

Earlier I did have a milk boiler for a long time but then I discarded it in favour of a heavy hindalium vessel. Now I must seriously mend my ways. I should either get a milk boiler again or till then , at least keep a heavy spoon as professor has written.I was feeling terrible today because I lost myself in some MGR SAROJADEVI romantic little interlude.Actually my grandson loves all my songs and I sing 'indha punnagai enna vilai?' for him.I wanted to check when it was to come but like a love struck teenage girl gaped a t the t.v grinning from ear to ear. I felt an irresponsible idiot.

That is something worth spilling the milk for aunty I love old movies and old movie songs especially tamil and telugu. But it has been quite sometime since I even watched TV let alone movies. Enjoy your time out even if it is only for a few minutes.
