Addicted to coffee

Australia

I am thinking of going to a medical supplies shop to buy an intravenous drip setup so I can mainline my coffee. Slow percolation sounds about right. It would certainly save my long-suffering slave's feet from having to be constantly running to fill my coffee cup. I probably drink about 6-8 litres a day. Anyone else addicted to coffee? Or tea, for that matter. Lash

6-8 litres a day! Are you serious??? You are going to do some serious damage to your adrenal system drinking that much coffee. No, I am not addicted, but I was...maybe. I used to drink it daily each morning and craved it throughout the day from time to time, but gave it away some years ago. It was one of the best decisions health wise that I have made. Once I got past the cravings and replaced the morning toast and coffee with smoothies I noticed huge improvements in my energy levels throughout the day. They became more stabilised with no peaks or crashes.

I know, I'm degenerate. Actually, I just did a recalculation because some people seemed so surprised at the quantity, and it's actually 3-4 litres per day. But hell, I'm 68 in three weeks, too late to change now. Lash

3-4 litres is still a huge amount! If you ever stop doing that cold turkey, your body will most likely feel like it is shutting down!

Well with a name like the Sensitive New Age Cowpersons I just had to do a search for them1 They look like a fun act to see live. I wonder if they are still touring? I could not see any gigs on their gig guide page?

No, I am not addicted to coffee, although I do enjoy drinking it. I normally drink it every day, but there have been many times when I have just completely stopped drinking it for various reasons, and I have never experienced the withdrawal symptoms that some other people seem to experience. I also do not get "jittery" or experience the caffeine rush that some people seem to experience, so maybe there is a correlation there.

That makes a number of us here immune to the "rush". There might be a research subject there for the interested scientists. In my case I don't actually see it as an addiction as much as a lifetime habit, and habits, I think, are harder to break than some addictions. Lash

I would agree that for some (like me) it is a habit. I say that I can't do anything before I have my coffee in the morning, but what I really mean is that I just need a little while in the morning to relax and wake up before I am faced with the urgent, pressing matters of the day. I do not normally drink milk first thing in the morning, but when I have substituted a glass of milk for my couple cups of coffee it has worked just as well, which shows that it is not the coffee or the caffeine but rather the fact that I do not wake up "ready and raring to go" and need a couple of minutes to be fully awake. I do know people that really are addicted to caffeine, though. They do get the rush of the caffeine, and they suffer withdrawal if they stop drinking caffeine ... they get jittery (although sometimes they also get jittery if they drink too much caffeine), they tend to be tired and seem rundown, they cannot sleep if they drink caffeine too close to bedtime, and they get headaches that do not go away until they drink some caffeine.

LOL! It is good that I saved my bikini from the last time, especially since this one is so beautifully stained with all the purple from the grapes. Now I just have to figure out something for my feet, because they were just getting back to their normal color rather than being stained purple ... the only good part of that was that I did not need to wear socks as the "ring around the ankle" looked like I was already wearing a pair of socks.

Coffee addict? - I'm not sure, but I was posing with a cup of fruit cordial or whatever here...
I'd say I probably am, yes. I don't drink brewed coffee, because I don't own a percolator, but that is my favourite kind by far: I love freshly brewed coffee with a passion. However, I drink instant, and a lot of it. One of the first things I'll do after waking up is make myself a cup of coffee...if there's no coffee then tea, but I prefer coffee. For some reason at my fairly advanced stage of life, what with things going wrong inside and all, tea doesn't agree with me...to some degree neither does coffee, but I can barely do without it. I use it to get going once I've woken up, and to keep going if I can, although I tend to wake horribly unrefreshed; and to exceptionally low energy levels. I can work in bursts, faciliated by copious cups of coffee. Some days I have more energy than others, and I'll sustain this with coffee. Once in a blue moon, I'll have a good deal of energy. I skip breakfast...and pretty well lunch too, although I can snack throughout the day. Food makes me sluggish. All this seems to add up to a coffee addict as I see it...it's not good for me, but I depend on it to function, albeit barely some days!

I have never understood what people are talkng about when they say coffee wakes them up or energises them. I can use it like some people use cocoa at night. We don't percolate, I actually don't much like brewed coffee. Instead we use Moccona Dark Roast granules, which for mine is the best instant around. Even if Nescafe were more to my taste I wouldn't drink it for philosophical reasons: I have a long memory, and the image of dying babies Nestling in their mothers' arms won't leave me. Lash

Coffee can be a mild stimulant for many, but I can drink it in the middle of the night (sleep issues) and still get some sleep afterwards. No; I don't know Miss Jennifer Dion...

Oh god, 8 litres per day is too much. I use to drink coffee 5 times a day, but it would not cross the limit of 600ml. Let me tell a simple idea. If you drink coffee in 250ml cup normally, replace the cup into a 150ml small cup, and take coffee usually. So, it would reduce the per day amount into half. Once you addicted with this schedule, replace again the 150ml cup into 80ml cup. By repeating this schedule, you can greatly eliminate the addiction.

Hi grandpa. I love tea. I brew it from tea leaves. What I like is a good strong cup of black Irish tea. By the pot. But I use milk and xylitol instead of sugar. It's better for you than sugar or artificial sweeteners. Anyway, I am allergic to coffee. I don't know of anyone else who is and most people have said they never heard of that. In fact, years ago , places that had complimentary coffee never had tea. Only coffee. When it was offered to me I'd say "No thanks. I'm allergic to it". They'd look at me as if I had two heads. I started just saying "No thanks". It makes me quite ill, even the smell of it. But I'm a tea drinker. It relaxes me. I used to use 1/2 & 1/2 or cream but I started using milk and lost 11lbs! I can appreciate your love of coffee. I don't like like the taste of coffee (good thing) but I wish I did and that I could drink it. I've always envied coffee lovers. You all seem so happy about it! And there's so many cool coffee places to go and socialize with like-minded individuals. I would have to travel many miles from here to find a tea room. Sigh. Well, that's my story. Have a nice day. And go have another cup of coffee. It's on me.

Brewed tea is occasionally OK, I drink Twinings when I drink it at all, but coffee is much nicer to my taste. My mother was a tea addict: There was nothing that couldn't be cured by a cup of tea, a Bex (aspirin), and a good lie down lol. Lash

Of course it is, along with the sugar and the full cream milk, and the potatoes I eat, and the butter I use, and ..... Everything's bad for you if you believe these scientists, all of whom are trying to make their mark in the world by "discovering" something new and saleable. Lash

I drink coffee and i love it but not to the extent of addiction. Three cups of coffee is my limit and i know when to stop. Coffee is not that good in our body when it is too much so we still need to be health conscious or else we are the one who will be suffering at the end of the day. I heard that adequate sleep, regular excersise and drinking lots and lots of water are all alternatives to caffeine. You can`t switch soda or decaffeinated coffee because your body night not have a good reaction about it. Control is still the best medicine !! Good luck and have a nice day ahead

I've tried substituting beef tea (I don't much like real tea), but it's not the same as a coffee. And it's not the sugar hit, because I mostly have them with artificial sweetener. But at this time of life I'd rather have the things I enjoy rather than trying to add a year of two of pain and disability to my lifespan. Lash

I gave up coffee completely a couple of months ago, but am now sneaking in the odd cup again. I didn't miss the coffee, but I did miss sharing a morning cup with my love. It's a habit, like everything. I just didn't manage to replace with another, better one before I slipped back.

a pleasant day grandpa_lash, same as you are, i love coffee. i am not calling myself a coffee addict, instead, i tagged myself as coffee lover. however, i have tried to avoid it since it was not good anymore to my health. so i have looked for a remedy on how to replace my cup of coffee since my taste bud always looks for it. with the help of some hot drinks like milk, i was able to divert my taste to have milk instead of coffee. and now, i can shift from coffee in the morning then milk in the afternoon.

Coffee....coffee....coffee - it courses through my veins morning, noon, and night. I made it fresh - I have a four cup coffee maker - and I only use the Dunkin Donuts ground original blend, plus bottled spring water. I don't care for tea, and it tends to give me cysts. The only time I drink tea is when I am ill - then with some honey and lemon. I take my coffee with about half tsp. sugar, and cream - not half and half - cream. Real table cream. When I was a kid I couldn't understand how people could drink the stuff - now, I know. It keeps me going, going...going. Yet it really doesn't keep me awake.

i agree with you. some would say they are not drinking coffee at night because the caffeine would keep them awake and make it difficult to sleep. but I do drink coffee at night, and i still get an even more restful sleep because my tummy have just taken in hot beverage. :)

I like coffee, but I believe that drinking coffee is a kind of ritual for me. So I drink it daily after lunch. I could do without it, but it would be difficult. Consequently, I am addicted to it too:)

No, I'm not addicted to coffee or tea. I think coffee is too bitter to drink, so I honestly don't like it. And I do sometimes like tea, but I'm young and prefer drinks :P

i don't like drinking coffee, but my many friends are addicted to coffee, they said they have no energy if they don't drink coffee, and they feel uncomfortable if they drink some coffee today, even though they don't have to drink something, they will buy some coffee to drink, they said it is a habit. they know they are addicted to coffee but they don't have any idea to overcome it and they don't want to give up coffee, they enjoy it.

Nope...NOT addicted anymore! There was a day and time I could have, would have matched you litre for litre...kept my addiction topped up! And I was immune to the caffeine jolt! Today, kettle on first thing upon arising..TWO large cups of DRIP coffee, and I am "off and running" ALL pistons fired! Course, like Lamby..that's along with a nicotine jolt, too! Been known, nowadays, to have a Black Cuppa, with a dram or two of Drambuie, after a wonderful repast..and I'M a WIDE AWAKE drunk!

AH, what a flood of good..and BAD memories! A "Grand Marnier" hang-over of Grand proportions...just a whiff today and the tummy turns.. But, OH, B&B--it's been forever, nearly forgot about that fine libation! Thanks for the memories!

Other than substituting either Grand Marnier or Armagnac and Benedictine (B&&B) for the Drambuie, I'm with you. Lash

I understand how you feel. I was drinking a potful (12 cup) a day a few years ago. After I had a couple of surgeries and taking some special medication, all coffee made me too shaky. So I've not had any coffee for about 3-4 years now. But I remember very well guzzling it down. (I've had a friend request to you for quite a while now. Please accept.)

I am also addicted to coffee. But I only limit myself to 3 cups and rarely at 4 a day. (And I already call that addict? lol!) But I really am a coffee lover. I prefer to have coffee than hot choco or tea. But my coffee should be creamy. I cannot bear black because it makes my tummy feel acidic. My day isn't complete without having a coffee break.
