hello friends,
" once you have your degree, you will have no trouble in finding a good job". This is what i heard ,while i was studying . I thought having a college degree would make a remarkable difference, in my future. But, when completed my degree and was in search of job, i found , all those words are not true at all. Me and my friends applied in many companies , but none of us got a good job, which is worth of our "so called college degree". Many of my friends ended up working jobs , which they could have got right after their high school studies. How does this happen? we believed that our degrees will help us in getting good jobs for us.But that's not what happened with us. what were we doing wrong? We were not average students,we dream't of big/better future. friends what do you think ,please share your views.

Hello my friend prashu228 Ji,
Well, your concept is correct, one has to ontain knowledge skills in form of degrees to get good job. But my hubby got degree after retirement. it had no relation at all. Now-a-days a good source is also needeed for a good job.
May God bless You and have a great time

Hi Prashu228,
I was wondering what type of degree you got. If you have a BA, I'm sorry to say that your job market is very tough. If you have a BS, it'll take some time, but you will find it eventually.
I believe college is a time to explore what you want to do. The job market is very tough nowadays. The true purpose of college is to gain those networking skills to get connected to job opportunities when you get out of college. I met hundreds of students who are in the same major as me and getting those connections can help you when you go out to search for a job. Use your network or start building a larger network. That's the fate of someone who is trying to find a job in this economy.

I find you are from USA. I find in almost all shops that there are vacancies -- i am Bed Bath and Beyond, Costco, Meijer, Wallmart etc. I do not know about the salary they pay.
pl see the link. it says unemployment rate in USA is 8.3%. Offically if it is given 8.3 then it must be around 20%.
http://www.tradingeconomics.com/united-states/unemployment-rate
For India it is stated 3.8%. But the real situation is worse. many are underemployed.
I am confused.

hi, Lastbrother,
exactly this is what i want to convey, there are people who are forced to work in such circumstances, and i have seen some of them too.

There probably are. However, if I was a college graduate with a degree (for example) in business management, why would I choose to go to work in Walmart? I could've gone straight from high school if I wanted to work in Walmart. It's that idea of what you're worth. If I had a family and was struggling, I would suck it up and work there to provide for them. In my current situation, I'm not interested in working at a low paying job unless I'm forced to.

Gee, that posted itself before I was finished.
As I was saying...I have known many people who attained work because of who they knew or whom they spoke to.
For myself, I have had more success by talking to people when I was looking for work rather than by doing interviews.
My advice would be to make yourself know to the type of people you want to work for. Rather than expecting to get the job you want, take a different approach. Figure out how to get to where you want to be, plan your work, then work your plan.

Hi prashu!
I can understand your and your friends' plight that how bad you all would have felt when you failed to secure a good job even after obtaining your coveted degrees.
Actually, in India the 'degree' or say education system is faulty, it does not guarantee or ensure employment and the system needs a drastic change.

hi prashu,
Degree is a certificate that you have studied those subjects and got passed in those subjects, thats only and there is no authentication that you got with degree, first is the knowledge, people have good knowledge even though they does not have degrees, but we have to make our own trials to get a good and search for good opportunities, increase your skill and know practical knowledge of the job etc etc, besides that luck is main, have a nice day.

It's called a ressestion dear. People still tell me I should go back to school and get my degree and tell my husband that and my mom that. Well you don't need that a lot of jobs are just going to train you any away and most all of them you don't need it. My mom hasn't ever finished off her college degree and she is almost 50 year old and has held down most of her adult life the same job at the same place she makes the same amount as the person next to here that got a degree that is half of her age. My husband has a job where he doesn't have a degree and making $10/hr which is very good. Yes some times a degree or even a few years of college will get you a better job but not all of the time you can't bank on it. Once your out of college you have to fight with everyone else in the world people your own age, younger or older all trying to get the same job and some places just say they are hiring to fill there quotes of how many people they have looked at and some places say they are always hiring but that isn't true they are not always hiring they can't afford to hire all year around. Because if they have to many people that means they are losing more money paying people to do a job.

The degree means sh!t in reality period. You don't need even some the people actually more then all of the people that my husband works with don't have any degress some don't even have there GED's. It's not need it you can wast your money going to school or just get a job and work your a$$ up the ladder. Everyone starts in a bad job and it's the job it's self that gets you the experinces not a piece of paper that says you did this many years sitting in a classroom spending money you don't have that you will be spending at least half your adult life paying off.

I think there's a great element of luck involved here. When you are in the right place at the right time, you will have all the opportunities you need to get a good job or your dream job. A college degree may help sometimes, but it's always luck I think which always make things happen for some people.

yes. luck plays an important role. we can also request thro all known sources. In 1996 I was employed in a bank. My salary was not sufficient because house rent paid was much higher than what was paid by the bank. that is the case always. One day while walking thro Karol Bagh I came across an institute offering coaching classes for banks, SSC and railways. I entered into and requested the Principal. He offered me part time jobs. I was getting a decent amount as loss as I was in Delhi. Now after retirement also I write for them. 16 year connection-- that way more attempts have to be made to get success. not all of us can be Bill Gates or Azim Premji(wipro).
We should not lose heart but try, try, try and try again.

These days you will find large number of guys and girls with several degrees, but because of stiff competition it is not possible to get a job of ones choice..
due to this the intelligent but unemployed utilize the talent otherwise, some become criminals too..
I passed high school in 1962, with that one can get job in banks, offices, i got my master of science in 1968, persons who run colleges came my home with appointment letters..

hello sir,
having a masters degree also, doesn't make any difference these days, thanks for the response, when you completed the degree and masters, that situation and circumstances were different , but now its different, i dont say studying a degree is waste, but we are getting the right job for either master degree, the whole industry is just filled with marketing and call centre , Bpo jobs, which just needs a 12th class and good English, now you can estimate the persons feelings who completed his masters and should go for a job in a Bpo ,just for the sake of money, but thats not the right job for the masters degree.

Well, I personally, to graduate, no I got there, I only took high school.
Actually, if I had the financial ability, now would like to study.
Unfortunately I can not, straight line is too high to pay universiataria.
However what you say, in some ways is true. Indeed, especially in today's day where having a job is like having "precious commodity" (at least as far as I know this from my country Italy). Of course, a graduate would take a more prestigious job, maybe, and obviously do not settle for the worker.
The problem that you study, you study, but in the end, however, the workplace, for there is none!

good point. It is true we were told that a degree is must for getting a job. that was ok in 1960s and 1970s. But now population has increased enormously.
now it is 1,220,200,000 (1.22 billion)
The population of our country in 1947 was 35 crore or 0.35 billion.
Job opportunities have not risen considerably. computerisation has helped improve efficiency but reduced dependence on men.
In 1980s when tamil nadu government was giving licence for stating engineering college liberally (compared to rules in those days) MGR, the chief minister was questioned. He seems to have said "the population is increasing--people may or may not get job after completing studes/degrees. Let them search for the job with engineering degree instead of arts degree..." . This is only hearsay information. but it is true even today.
Do not lose heart. Try for a suitable job and you will get it.
Nowadays Phds are joining as bank clerks or clerks in government. So we cannot say we could have got the job with high school studies.
best wishes

They lied having a degree is neat and all but doesn't do what it used to. Plus all the older people who already have degree's or just much more experience by being vastly older will most likely get that good job before us. You nor I did anything wrong we just followed what everyone told us to do.

We bought the wrong plan. The plan "go to school, get good grades, and find a safe secure job with benefits" is the plan sold to us when we were young. It is the plan most parents sold their children. However, most parents are just a recipient of the same plan. It is a dysfunctional plan. I have proven it; you've proven it; and many have proven it. What we need is to buy the new plan. The new plan of being in business, being the boss, applying the law of leverage, and living the life that we should be living. It starts with a desire to have a better life. Get someone who is successful in business to coach you to success. If you don't have one, you might want to consider yours truly.
I've been in business for three years now, after realizing that working at my job for the rest of my life will not give me the kind bright future that I want. Let me know.

Dropping business just because you don't have the knowledge is like dropping your dreams. If you truly want a better life, be willing to learn the skills and the mindset necessary to make it happen. You are able if you want to. The good thing is that success skills in business can be learned.

This is true. And the economy doesn't help much. I worked in a shipping office where truck drivers came in to get their paperwork. One driver told me he had a college degree and a job. But no chance for advancement or much more money. Then he found out that truck drivers made more than him. He learned how to drive a truck and is making more than he ever did. Two other drivers said they had degrees but couldn't find jobs. So they drive trucks now, too. These drivers are lucky because they work for the USPS and that is good pay. But it's tough for mostly everybody these days. Especially when you've worked hard to get your degree and then find that it doesn't seem to be helping you get that job. But young people today are very much affected by the economy and you're aware of the problems. Work for change. My generation (the 60's) worked to create many changes in this country. You can do the same in yours. So that future generations won't have the problems you are experiencing now. Good luck finding that job!

the college Degree is useful in some zone, some country. but i think if we want to find a better job now, i can not only have a college degree, if we want to earn more money and have a better life, it is neccessary that we should have a higher degree, becuase knowledge is so important now, and it is related with educational system, in china there are a lot of college students, but many chinese students don't learn at college or university, so the value of a college degree in china is low, i think nomatter what, learning something can make us have a beter life is the most important.

I know that many of us wasn't lucky enough to landed a new job after we graduated in college. Its simply because there no enough jobs out there that fits our qualification or simply there's no enough jobs created by society (especially the government). I would ask the same question if I'm one of the many young student who felt that the college degree I earned for many years in college doesn't give me a better life that it promises when I first entered college school. That would be a devastating event of my life and wondered did I waste those years studying in college and ended up jobless when I graduated?
But, for the lucky ones, the mode would be in the other side of the road. They will surely say, yes, a college degree do have its importance. That's why I have this managerial job today, or earning more money that what I expect for. Really is a college degree will give you the edge over the other when finding a job.
As I said above, the only problem is that there is no enough jobs out there, but still a college degree is worth the effort.

Once i told him, to complete his degree ( atleast through distance mode). The very next minute , his question was, you have a degree, and don't have a proper job, not even earning like me,then whats the use of having a degree? ahh i was speechless, no answer, only ashamed nothing else.thanks for the response.

Hi, I totally agree that having a degree, the chance of landing in a good paying job is more probable than the one who have not.
What I mean is, having acquired it from a prestigious school would be an advantage especially if you are included in the top graduating students. If you are one of them, then finding a job is very easy. Sometimes the company are the one inquiring about the top graduates of the school so they can hire the best.
I don't know about you and your friends not being hired even though you have a degree. Maybe there are reasons for it. It could be, that you were over qualified for the position you have applied for or no available post for your earned degree.
Just keep applying. I know you and your friends will find job suitable for your earned degree.

College degree really having its own worth. Some people have colorful dreams while studying and they think that they will get a good job after finishing the college course, but it is highly impossible. Since lot of persons finishing college and got a degree certificate, it is really hard to give good job to each and every degree holders. Merely Getting degree is not guarantee to have a good job, you must have great skill, talents and experience to sit in a great job.
College degree is just a key to get a good job, you must use the key in a proper way and improve your skills and talents in all the possible ways to get a good job. Now a days getting degree is not a great thing and most of the persons have their Masters and Doctorate degree. You must be unique and have additional skills to get a good job in this competitive world.
Don't think that your college degree is waste and useless, surely it is having its own importance and differentiate you from others. Day by day new updates are coming in each and every field, you must be updated with the recent trend and improve your skills in various ways. Don't expect a great job after finishing the degree. Just join as a trainee in the available job in your filed and get experience with it. You will learn a lot in your training period also you can search a proper job in another side it will be useful to you to gain experience.
College education will give your more knowledge, confidence and will power, with that knowledge you can face the world without fear. Each and every college degree is having its own importance and give more confidence to the student.

Having a college degree does not necessarily means that you'll automatically end up with a "good" job upon graduation. On the other hand, not having a college degree doesn't mean you won't have a "good" job either. What constitutes a "good job" is subjective, but most would define a "good job" as a high paying job, and I think that if you come across top 10 jobs/careers lists that some of them does not really require a college degree. However, having a college degree does open many doors for you, as it's a basic requirement for many jobs and careers.
Personally, I think that college education is mainly for personal/intellectual betterment, but it really depends, I guess.
