I read an article on the web about this...many people find that it is not a good thing to stop middle school reading classes .What do you all say to this? Is it still essential or can we do away with it? Personally I feel that reading is an essential part of school education .. http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/howard/news/ph-ho-cf-reading-1124-20111121,0,7473270.story http://youthvoices.net/discussion/no-more-classesno-more-booksno-more-teachers-dirty-looks

Many things have been changed from our conventional methods. Not only in schooling or colleges. If we notice, we can see this change evrywhere. The method of education field got a tremendous changes and teaching techniques, learning methods, topics and everything. My wife is a teacher for small children from age 5-10 (not in school) and I used to prepare teaching guides for them (just to help my wife) and she used to adopt all those methods and this year, they got 3 times more students in her institution only because of the childrens speical abilities. For my guidance, I have included reading in the main stream as reading is very much essential and the pronounceation difference, techniques and many more things to be noted. Even in the higher classes also its a must and now-a-days, no body giving any psychological approach for anything. The authorities are only focused on, how they can divert the children from committing suiside and they even scared to implement the useful but really worthy methods for teaching. The teachers also are much restricted or limited with their time limits, portion coverage, overall development and the upliftment of each and every student is really a tedious job. But managing everything within the limits and if anyone can do it, they can try for it. Because most of the students wont read much and they would just grasp. Any way, if a student to improve, they should read and reading is just worth for many things.

Hi thanks, of course, reading habit is still very much there and people do take an interest in books and buy books...If you see the kind of people who are buying books it is mostly middle aged and the more educated kind ,not the very young, who normally dont spend time browsing through books these days.If at all very few do that since they are busy with their computers and other stuff....If such a trend continues in the coming years reading habit is bound to decrease...

Hi thanks, thanks a lot for all the details you have given...I wholeheartedly agree with you since I myself being a teacher realise the importance of reading.I in fact insisted that there should be a library day when students get to visit the library, sit and go through the books and by doing this on a regular basis they develop an interest in reading...we do have this facility at school and thankfully even the staff is taking an interest so the management too is buying new books ..Thanks a lot for sharing all the details , all the best and have a great evening

Hi, Good to know that you are also a teacher. It is a real observed fact that those who have a habit of reading will always do it. I have noticed that on the roads sides also, there are book sellers (second & fresh books) and most of the time there are people surrounded with this person. Even yesterday also, there was about 200 books were selling on the railway overbridge on Rs 50 each and people were baging the books. So, it is not that the habit of reaiding is stopped. Even our office has provided us to get books form 'kwench library', so that we can get the books. We will book the requied books by selecting 'online' and demand for it. By evening we will get delivered the requested book in our office. Also, in our office iteslf has got a huge library and the company is paying around Rs 10 laksh for only books. [Yes, it is true because the librarian in our office is my friend and I know it]. So reading never stops and the habituated will ever prefer for it.

Hi kiran', no doubt reading is a good habit for getting knowledge and making the time full of satisfaction. When I was a student I used to read novels and fictions and sometimes I passed the whole night to finish a book. But I lost the habit. Now at the last part of my life I'm trying to get back the habit of reading. I think it will be better than worship. Or we can say reading is one kind of worship.

I think reading is the main element in learning, We must not neglect reading skills and we better develop them and encourage reading even as a fun activity. The proposal of canceling reading classes is about being more efficient and include some reading focus in every other subject since , there is always the need to read the learning material of each and every subject. So , maybe , reading classic literature is not so necessary but still , the analyzing of a text and making conclusions that help with answering complicated questions is very valuable. In the end , everyone that goes to a high educational institution will need to read a lot of material and if he has problems with that , he will have to take a course of how to read and understand texts. He will have to read multiple times and connect ideas from multiple paragraphs , make conclusions. By the way , there is an article that you just brought up that starts with the headline :"No more classes , No more books , ..." How is that article belongs to this discussion ? it is about a student that is happy about the fact the school year was over. (you brought that article in the second link : youthvoice.net...)

Hi stringer, thanks a lot for sharing your viewsI too am of the opinion that reading is an essential part of life and one should never compromise on that.Unless a child develops the reading habit,he can never hope to become brilliant or outstanding in anything he does.As it is we see the habit slowly dying away and now with such policies being made things are only going to get worse , have a wonderful weekend

Just make sure all the articles that you bring to the subject are relevant to the topic and not just the headline. I read that article and I didn't understand where is the issue of the reading books in school. As I always try to stay true to the game and so I try to read carefully everything that the discussion starter brings. If the material is not relevant to the discussion , it can confuse and delay the relevant respond to the relevant idea.

hi kiran, I think reading is essential, this helps us , in improving our mistakes, and pronunciation, and also the quality of reading . I don't understand why people want to make such things which , is not good in any way. Instead they can, make necessary efforts in making changes in the syllabus, according to our needs, we still follow the old syllabus which is not very useful now, decrease the burden of books, and also fees structure. There are still so many to do..

Hi prashu, thanks a lot for adding your views I am in complete agreement with you were number books and the huge syllabus is concerned. Most of what the children learn at school is just theoretical without any practical knowledge or effort put into it , so remains largely useless .What we study should help us in our daily lives,if not what is the point...No doubt that things are being modified every now and then ,but it should not be at the cost of axing down something which has been tie tested and proven to be very useful..have a nice day

Reading is still essential in schools despite hating what I said. It improves fluency, vocabulary, and analytical skills. I fear that their college entrance examination would not be as good as the previous years. But I could simply be exaggerating. Who knows whether a trend will follow, right?

yes! reading classes are not at all heard in most of our schools. there is no period for that in the time table too. moreover there are no trained staffs for handling such classes. with the visual media taking a vital role in the kids' life today, reading habit should be really encouraged as it only can give them freedom to think and imagine.

Hi ganesh, that was not the case before since certain number of periods were allocated just for reading and this was considered very important, that's how we had a generation of people who became book lovers and also reaped the benefits of it.I see that it is now being replaced by the net and Tv and others.I am definitely not against it but we have to balance things out..thanks a lot ganesh for sharing your views, enjoy your weekend

I think in our old way of thinking, the old schools style, we differently don't agree with this kind of move. We know that we had learned something I school when attending to reading classes. But today, the schools curriculum are getting bolder. The studies that started years ago had now have its results and some of them were integrated already in the new curriculum. Maybe, that includes your concern. But of an old school parent, I would still preferred the way school teaches their students and hopefully will not implement radical change in the curriculum.

I agree and also to a great extent believe that change is an essential part of our life, but any change should not crush what was already there and doing good and bring in something that may or may not be as good... I too feel that certain essentials like reading lessons should be left untouched because it instils certain amount of discipline and quality in the educational system- all the best and thanks a lot

Hi, I don't see the rationale of the program. Maybe something is behind it or they something better than reading. I grew up reading and it is still my daily exercise. Children and young adults should not stop doing so, it stunts the learning process and the mind stagnate to the point of being indolent. As I've said, they should have a good reason for not including the reading class in the school curriculum.

Hi rog, thanks a lot for sharing your views I agree that reading and gaining knowledge is a life long process without which as you rightly point out mind stagnates and reading as a habit needs to be inculcated while young...all the best and happy mylotting

Yes, I agree with you that reading is an essential part of education. Good thing here in our country specifically in my kids school, they still have reading sessions. At the start of the school year each students took an exam on reading comprehension and the computer graded them accordingly. My daughter got the highest score in their class and my son got a low grade. My son is in grade 7 but his reading comprehension was only equivalent to grade 6 student. The school principal called a parent-teacher meeting and we discussed the result of the exam. The students are required to have reading sessions in the library 3 times a week. and quarterly they will take the same exam to know their developments.

Hi jellsiguenza , thanks a lot for sharing your views ! i too feel that reading is very essential and schools must individually make it a part of their curriculum otherwise children would never develop the reading habit which is very important !Good that your children are being given special attention , as parents we have to be extra careful during those formative years - all the best and happy mylotting
