Do we need to go to college?

I've recently read similar articles about how college doesn't even guarantee a safe job in the future now. Instead, some companies are giving thousands of dollars to students to NOT go to college. They encourage students to spend the money investing and innovating a company. The students say they would rather get the hands on experience rather than learning from a classroom. I think it's an interesting topic because these students are actually starting a business and learning from it rather than going to class and learning about business.

Let's just say I know of 2 people right now that BOTH have college degrees and are making minimum wage because not too many are hiring! It is a crazy world we are facing these days...Very scary.
I would not waste my time right now working on a degree to get me no where but a minimum wage job. I can do that without the degree.
Starting a company right now is a big risk as well. In a good economy that would be the ideal thing to do. But now there are so many companies closing down! =(

I heard businesses are in a great economy! It's a time to start! If we don't start, the economy won't expand to a churning pace!

Here where I live, all of the big stores and resturants are closing their doors. They are going out of business which tells me any other company is going to go down too. I don't know about other places but where I live things are horrible and every day another place is closing...

I think going to college is important because no matter if you think other people out there can get a job without graduating, it would be helpful for when you want to get a job abroad. They usually require college graduates. And besides, those who finish college get more edge and advantage. It's true that you'll learn more when you do hands-on training, but it always helps to have a college degree.

Students dont have any much money and they are to ask for them to their parents. As the students are suffering from financial dependence, they feel a drive to earn to materialize their financial dreams.
On the contrary students are supposed to learn and stay with books. They must learn each and every word of a book to make them competent for future.
In fine, I would suggest students wont get involved to any job that will harm their learning.
Students exclusive job is to learn and prepare themselves. They will get much time to earn in future but not the time to learn.

yeah so true..I'm a degree holder but I'm having difficulty on finding the exact job for me. Because of the pressure I'm having right now, I've applied for a job which we can get after high school. [sigh] what'a life I have.

Yes, i think it is very essential to go to college especially here in the Philippines. For us, having an educational degree is something you can boast and as basis for job opportunities. People are named after their degree. The higher educational background you have, the higher the position you can be.

In our country, getting a college degree is something that is important. Most companies hire those with college degrees as compared to those without any. Though right now, the economy is suffering that is why there are so many people right now who are unemployed. Nevertheless, having a college degree is definitely a plus rather not having any at all. As for the business concern, it is a matter of luck as well as the financial capability. It is hard to start a business without nothing on the pocket. There are those who are really talented who were not even able to get a college degree and made it to the list of being rich and famous. But they have certain talents as well as ingenuity that made them what they are. So unless a person have tho, then a college degree would certainly be helpful.

there is no second thoughts about it,like school, college is also yet another important factor which must be taken into consideration ,you will learn about the outside world and how to get adapted to it.i would suggest in rare cases if you are so techy and intelligent,i would ask you not to attend instead focus on your mainstream field

Yes college is not necessary only experience is necessary. I have seen some person are less educated but their earning is more. College is necessary if you get more knowledge than you have.

Of course we need to go to college and study as well because thats one way of helping our parents and getting something for our future regardless of the financial problem that most people nowadays are facing. I should say that other countries have good economic status because they the benefit of free schooling..unlike here in the philippines that the economy is in crisis. Generally, I do encourage everyone to go to college because someday you will become a parent too and you need to have stable job for you to provide for the need of your children.

People were distracted when it comes to money and opportunity to work and earn bigger rather than to have degree or going to college and graduate and at the end earning less rather than they have already. but still its upon with the people who wants and need money for their success but instead they can do the same as part time. To be at the college would great opportunity to learn and enjoying life as student for a while cause in half of life you will spend in work already and not in school and I'm sure people will missed those experience as students.

well, now there's a thing about college these days. A lot of companies prefer someone with a degree, with globalization afoot, the more modern things are, companies want their aspects to be handled by someone with knowledge and experience from college. College now has a standard of making their student more active in their studies like participating in college activities, seminars, extraculicular activities. They can earn experience from these things before they come to the workplace society.

A college degree does not guarantee a job, but unfortunately neither does starting a business. It all depends on the students and to pay students not to go to college means that some of those students may not have anything to fall back on.
That being said, there are a lot of ways to start and keep up a business with and without a college degree. With the way the economy is, I can understand why some potential students would rather start their own company.
If the company should unfortunately fall however due to economic reasons, most places you want to get a job want you to have a degree. The McDonald's not far from my house was asking any manager applicants or employees that wanted to move up to have a bachelor's in business.
I think it is coming to a point where you either need college to get a job and/or start a business one day. Or hope you can come up with a business idea that sells whether for profit or not.
I want to be an accountant for example. Unfortunately for most laws I need to go to school to learn them, however, I can do basic book keeping and accounting without going to school. I offer to help people create budgets and more for anywhere from ten to twenty dollars a session and rather than pay for a credit machine I tell them cash or paypal.
Basically, some people need to go to college and others can manage without it.

here in our country, finishing college is very important. many companies prefer to hire college graduates than undergrads. and those with college degrees would likely to get one of the best positions in a company. undergrad would get a job too, but the compensation would not be as nice as a college grad's.
as to investing there money on business, rather than going to college, well, its a preference here in our country. some wealthy people would prefer this, but mostly, wanted to graduate in college, even the wealthy ones.

I think the reasons for why college doesn't guarantee a safe job anymore are because of the overall economy moreso than because college degrees aren't massively helpful anymore (which I believe they are; for full disclosure I am a college student right now so call me biased if you want). Sure, the unemployment rate of those with bachelor's degrees is about 4.5 percent. The overall rate is hovering around 9-10 percent though, and is higher for those who only completed high school.
I also think this is a matter of what field is in question. The one you mentioned, starting a business, is probably not as necessary to have a degree in. For one thing, you'd be your own boss, so you don't have to require yourself to have a degree to be able to have that job (unlike others where the employer would want the employee to have a degree). Also, I think the classes you could take in college for business are not as applicable to the real world as some classes in other fields of study would be. I think this stems from the fact that businesses are unique and running one business would be very different from another.
As far as hands-on experience, it is indeed valuable, but the things you learn in college outside of the classroom are quite valuable when it comes to getting a job afterwards too. I personally have learned how to give effective speeches and effective time management, among other things.
The whole "paying people not to go to college" is a new thing to me, though. I can see it in one sense: by attending college, the cost is not only the tuition and other costs, but also the opportunity cost (economics, see username) of the wages you could have earned by having a job for those college years.
