Does too much sugar really cause hyperactivity?

I just read an article saying that sugar does not cause hyperactivity. According to it, sugar water in fact (that's 1/2 teaspoon sugar in 1 oz. water) can soothe a crying baby. As sugar enters the bloodstream and reaches the brain, it temporarily increases calming neurochemicals such as serotonin. But when blood sugar levels get too high, the body responds by producing large amounts of insulin. Blood sugar levels then drop quickly, causing a child to feel shaky, and can also trigger a craving for more sweets, which leads to a vicious cycle of highs and lows. Protein and fiber help slow the rise and fall of blood sugar level.
This is why it is so important for us parents to monitor the food intake of our kids. Obesity and diabetes can start from childhood too, you know.
