What's the best exercise for someone that's sitting on a chair all day?

I work in an office and my job is in front of the computer all day. This means that I have to sit on a chair for many hours, so my back sometimes hurts and I've noticed that when I gain weight, it's always at the lower part of my body! I am sure that it also has to so with my body type, but it's also because of the fact that I am sitting all day! So I was wondering what is the best way to exercise for a person that does office work like me? I imagine that it should be something more intense for the legs, would running be ideal or another type of exercise?

I've tried yoga and pilates & I loved both! Maybe I enjoyed pilates a bit more because it's more intense! But they don't have classes like that over here and it's so dissapointing. I am planning to start something new from September and insist with is, as you proposed! That's why I wanted everyone's opinion on which form of exercise would be appropriate for me! Thanks for the great advice!

Once I was troubled with the problem that is similar with you. As the consequece of my experience, walking or running is too soft to relax your body significantly, so I support yoga best. Yoga can extend your body fully, streching your tight antisternum and relaxing your muscles, which benefits me so much.It will keep you more healthy and better figure if persist in practice. For convenietly and regularly taking yoga,I copied a video of teaching in my computer and exercised myself after work in whatever day you like. It's effective for me,which, I hope, will be helpful to you.

Great, thanks! I have a yoga mat and everything that I need because I used to practice at home for a while! I had some videos that I found online but the problem with yoga is that the postures need to change between them and I can't follow the video very well because I can't look on the screen because I need to concentrate on the postures or else I might lose my balance! How did you overcome that?

You can take some time off the computer and walk around for a few minutes. You might want to get some water or coffee from the pantry. And, while sitting, every hour or so, turn your head to the direction of the farthest wall, to rest your eyes from staring at the computer for too long. Then, you can have stretching exercises for your neck, shoulders and lower back.

I drink a lot of water and it's good because I get up sometimes to refill my bottle! This tip about the eyes is very useful, I had read it a few years ago because as a student I was also spending a lot of time in front of the computer and I remember to rest my eyes a few times when I feel tired. I prefer going to the window and looking outside for a minute, it really feels different! I think I should do more stretching though, everyone is suggesting it and I don't do enough while I am sitting!

Yes, do that. Stretching gives our muscles a good boost and a break. It feels really good to stretch our arms, legs and torso, once in a while. Just be careful not to overstretch, because that could also strain your muscles.

Hi, Besweet, this is a useful topic because most your problem is a problem of many of us. I'd suggest to make a small complex of exercises for the legs and waist and to do it every day. It helps when you make rather small efforts but make them constantly. The other thing is to walk as much as possible. Good luck!

Now that the weather is good I can go for walking in the afternoon! It's nice to walk in my town and it's also good for the health. Maybe I should join the gym for the winter time because I won't be able to go outside if it's raining or it's too cold!

I would suggets bicycle and walking. They both help our body. I can't think of anything specific for "office use". :)

Haha :) I am going for cycling regularly but I don't see any results. Walking probably works better! When I go for cycling, I don't feel that my muscles are working so much, but if I go for one hr walking in the afternoon I can feel it the next day!

The best exercise that you can do is stand up! even for people who are paraplegics and are chair bound they have shown that the benefits of just standing up even with supports is amazing. That is why the try to get paraplegics up in frames as often as posible because it strengthens the heart. So you should stand up as regularly as possible even if it is just for a minute or so. Obviously that may not be possible depending on your working environment so the next best thing might be some leg stretches and some calf raises.

I didn't know that by simply standing up we can get benefit and help our body! There are times that I have a lot of things to do, and I want to stretch or stand up but I don't do it because I want to stay focused and finish what I am doing! Work is important, but health is my top priority so we must all take good care of our body and do whatever is necessary to stay in good healthy condition!

Can you switch from sitting in a chair to sitting on a yoga ball? That way you are actively sitting rather than passively sitting. You should notice a huge improvement in your glutes and thighs.

I think that this will make me feel very tired from the first hour! It might be an exercise but when I am working I need to feel comfortable. However if I find a big yoga ball to sit on at the end of the day and be able to reach my computer as well, I could try it! Thanks for your comment! :)

I also have the office work. Namely I have to stay in the office most of the time and usually I have to sit in my chair. You are right that we shall have some exercises now and then. So sometimes I will go to have a cup of water or go to check the printing paper, fax machine etc. So at least I have some walk in the office. Perhaps it is nothing, but it is also a kind of exercise. Besides, everyday I go to work and go home on foot for about half an hour:) I love China

The fact that you walk to recah your job and then to go back home is the best exercise! And all the other techniques certainly help you relax & stretch your muscles. Thanks for the advice!

Being on the same seat as you are, I take time to stretch out and walk around as much as I could every now and then for 5 minutes or less around the room or house as this would keep the circulation on my lower extremity going, lol! Just a simple walk or stretching exercise will do as to get the muscles of the lower extremity loosen up.

I am realising from your answers that more people have the same problem with me! Streching is good and it helps! Also sometimes I need to shange my visual area and take my eyes off the screen for a while, or look outside the window as far as I can. It is said that this can help the eyes when they are tired. Thank you for your comment!

A little bit of stretching when you already feel stiffness. Stretching some parts of your body like legs and arms can help a lot. furthermore, try to walk every now and then and shake your body.

I would like to suggest you to do yoga and walk briskly a few kilometers.Doing yoga is not a time consuming exercise.Instead,it affects your overall health very positively. However walking a few kilometers may take you some time, may be one or two hours. If you don't have that much time, you may run for nearly ten or fifteen minutes.I think, that would be enough. But don't sit in front of computer for long hours. It may cause you a lot of physical problems.Get up from your chair from time to time and walk in the room for two to three minutes.

Thanks for your comment! I usually clean my room and my mother does the rest of the house! The most tiring housework that is also a good excercise is when we wash the rugs! We wash them outside with a broom and washing powder and since we have a lot of rugs in the house, this can take up to a week!

Yeah you are right when you said running would be good. Yes you are gaining weight on the lower part because you are sitting whole day. My aunt who has a shop and she sits whole day and after more than 20years of sitting and one place for more than 8hrs a day, her bottom is become extra fat and it is not proportionate to her body at all. It looks weird. I think you start to do some exercise when you are at home and when at work, do take breaks of about 10 minutes. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead.

Thanks! I am trying to avoid having such problems with my body! That's why I want to exercise more, I think I've gained some weight lately and my jeans are very tight! I need to lose them because they're mainly concentrated at my lower part. I doesn't look weird yet but I can see the difference at the mirror!

That is the kind of tips that I wanted! I will try the kapalabathi exercise, I am going to search for youtube videos! Streching and walking in the office is very good and it relieves my muscles, but I also need some exercise! I think that many jobs nowadays require people to sit on a chair all day and this can cause many health problems and back pains. Thank you! :)
