Is the little number next to your myLot name a motivating force?

I must admit that having the little number next to my name that goes up each time I make a contribution on myLot is a subtle motivating force to get me to keep commenting and posting discussion topics on myLot. Even more than the earnings. It is probably similar to the number of friends on facebook or the number of followers on Twitter. It is a little bit of a status thing. Am I the only one that feels like this - even just a little bit - or are others also slightly driven to push up their number for some reason!

Mine is no longer a motiviating force for me, in fact it is quite heavy to carry around now
I hope you are aware that not all of your activity will cause the number to increase but, as it is not related to earnings, it doesn't matter. It is only an indication of how active a user is and is not a 'post count'.

So what participations are added to the number, because I too noticed that not all of my comments made the number rise up. I guess when you get up to a certain number it stops to be a motivation as it would take a long time to seem like it is moving.

The number increases only when you:
- start a new topic for discussion (after it receives 2 responses, or 1 response + 1 comment)
- respond for the first time on a disussion started by others.
- comment for the first time on a discussion started by others.
All of your other activity adds to earnings (if it is within the guuidelines) but will not cause the number to increase.
It decreases when you lose posts due to deletion.

Sometimes the number is a motivating force, and other times the number makes me feel like a slacker compared to other people here, although I know that they have been here for years. I just commented on another post about an hour ago how that person has over thirty thousand posts/responses next to their name, and in order for me to get there I would have to spend the next 5 years trying to do it. That would not be until 2017!!
So, sometimes the high number next to a persons' name makes me feel kind of like I'm in a race where I will never catch up. But then again sometimes the number DOES motivate me. The other day I had like, the number 194, 195 next to my name. I set a goal and was determined to get up to 200 before I got off of the computer that night...and I did it. So the number served as a goal-marker, if you will.

Just in case you didn't know, now that you are over 200 you can use the smilies
They are under "mylot code" to the the left of the bix where you type.

You are definitely correct there friend.Do not count those numbers because if you keep on minding it,it would just make you disappointed that you are very slow.I have also experienced that before yet I just came to a conclusion by just making more opinions here.It keeps me busy and I did not expect I have now a high number.Just be patient and all you could just think is that if others can do it,you could also do it.

Yes I think you are right, it is like the old saying that a watched pot never boils. The more you watch something and wait for it to grow or change the slower it seems to go. But if you take your attention off something then when you next notice it you will be surprised by how it has changed.

The number next to my name will only motivate me until I reach the magic 500 posts and I can finally use paste, after that is will have no bearing for me at all, I do feel 500 is quite a large number to have to achieve before enabling paste, it'll take me months.

Quite so, but it does mean I can write stuff down when it crosses my mind, type it up while I am travelling and then just paste my topics here, already spell checked

It is for me. I'm one of those people who like to have a scoreboard even if it really doesn't mean that much. For now it is very motivating. When you reach 200 you can use emoticons in your posts. When you reach 500 you can copy and paste. That means it will be easier to add appropriate links or quote material. Also at 500 you can add pictures to your comments not just when you make a discussion. When I get past the 500 mark I'm sure the shine will come of it but for right now it is something to shoot for.

Yeah very rightly said. the number gives you a feeling about your position on Mylot and inspires you every time you see it and drives you to keep posting comments and discussions everyday. What say?

Absolutely, I think it is a motivating factor - not the only one - but it does help make you want to comment more to increase your number. On the other hand it perhaps makes me think that some people spend a lot of time, maybe too much time on here, with such high numbers that some people have.

I used to post a lot of responses and discussions just to see my number go up with each thing I typed up. It really does help to pace myself with what I am doing here on Mylot. But once I reached over a 1000 I didn't seem as motivated as when I first joined Mylot. It kinda helps me to reach a goal of typing around five to ten replies or postings a day on Mylot. I hope you enjoy your time here on Mylot.

from the amount of time that it woud take to get a number of 1000 I can see how it might lose the shine once you get over 1000. I am amazed by these people that have numbers of 50 000 and even more. They are serious myLotters. I think my first goal will definttely be to get to 100 and then I will take it from there.

That number does tell a story of one's participation. Also when one reaches 100 they can rate others and also, one is rated with stars. When one reaches 200 one can use myLot codes and when one reaches 500 one can use the copy/paste facility though copying and pasting from contributions made by others is not allowed!!

Why not inmy...? If one has participated giving quality comments and/or responses and many for that matter, that will surely reflect on one's earnings.

Yes, But your earnings do not increase the higher your participation rank is. I think this would be a good feature as it would encourage people to be active for longer on the site which might also make it easier to maintain referrals. But all of that is up to the powers that be. I am looking forward to getting a star and being able to rate people though.

We share the same sentiments, inmyopinion. Definitely, the numbers beside the our name keeps us all the more excited to respond to interesting discussions. You may notice others having more than 5000 responses that they have, then you'll know how much they really enjoy being here.

On this page you can see the busiest Lotters with the highest numbers.

Am not sure about the exact number of years. I joined myLot in 2010, but was not active and have forgotten about it coz I was busy working online then. Now that I am no longer busy, MyLot became my outlet after doing chores in the house and taking care of my kids' needs during the day.

Yes, There are a lot of people in here with some really high numbers. Does anyone know who has the highest number in myLot. And how long has the site actually been around for. I thought it had only been online for about 1 year but then I saw someone said that it they had been a member for 5 years, so it is much older than I thought it was.

Actually, when i was new here, i wasn't noticing that little number beside my user name. But i just kept on posting and discussing, then i noticed the star with a number on it.
I started noticing mylotters who have no 10 and looked for discussions about it. Thus, i came to know that it is what should be upped as we stay here at Mylot, until you get the no. 10 star.

ok. So I have to keep on going trying to get a star and then get a 10 in my star. I will take it from you SIMPLYD and start aiming to get a star above my name!! :)

2000 is still far away
when I was new, I come to mylot as advice to earn some cash. but to stay here for long time, run for cash would not make me stay longer, so I'm still here because I do love mylot and enjoy the moment we response, share and discuss each other here. can you find another site like mylot?? so far I never find another "mylot"

2000 is a big number and you have quite a way to go to get there. How long do you anticipate it would take you to get to that sort of level. Do you participate on myLot because you enjoy it or is ti the earnings that motivate you. I would assume that it would have to be a mixture of the 2.

Now on to my own response...
It was when I joined, I wanted to get the star and the smileys which I have now. They spice the comments up and make it fun for everyone. Now I just love to post and respond and have fun. That's the real motivation here for me now

Sorry!
I basically worded wrong in a very bad way what I meant but it turned out very poorly for the people who are going to read it. If it were possible I would delete that post and attempt to better explain what I meant....
It gave a nice tutorial discussion for you though. I'll keep my wording and such better now and re-read the guidelines so I know exactly what I should be saying so mistakes like that don't happen.

hi inmyopinion for a long time it did but over five years its almost embarrassing as its bigger than most other peoples
'and I am a shy person not wanting to be in the limelight over'anything.I just am retired with lots of time to my lot compared to y ounger people who all work and have families and less time.

Hi Hatley, you are right - 52663 is a big number - of course that number will change by the time I press enter I assume. But it is nothing to be embarrassed about. You are one of the most prolific contributors on myLot and you have been on here for years! I would like to amass a higher number myself, but I am not sure I am going to have the staying power. I will see how I go. 100 will be the first landmark.

Just remember that only your first comment and respond will increase that number.
Look at the FAQ to know the different between a comment and respond.
For some member, they could write more then one comment and respond for a single post.
Whether a post by theirself or by others.

I used to really keep track of every single activity I do in order to see the number go up, but lately, I have stopped doing that. I just let it go and answer discussions that interest me. The number is no longer given much importance as I focus on looking for discussions.
