I love doing family history. It is so interesting. You learn so much. I have traced mine on my moms side back to the 1500's. My dads side has been traced back to the 1700's. I was working on my ex husbands side but he has a big family so it is a real job. I had most of mine done and lost it all when my computer crashed. I am hoping to get started on it again. I would like to make books for my children when I get it done.

Wow, it is amazing that your mothers cousin traced her side of the family back 300 years. I bet that took some time! I haven't traced my family history back to learn more about my ancestors. It seems like a very fun and interesting thing to do. I think they have services now that you can pay someone to do that research....maybe someday.

I think it is absolutely amazing learning about family history! Did you know that George Bush and Colin Powell are like 2nd cousins or something?

I haven't traced mine, but I want to. I think it would be neat to find out all about your ancestors. I don't know much beyond my grandparents on both sides.

It is such a curiousity of mine because you know you have lots of ancestors heck going back thousands of years. I mean we all started from somewhere right?

Oh I am sorry. Why would there be no one? I mean isn't there a distant cousin or aunt or uncle or something?

My brother does that in his spare time (it started as a school project for one of his kids that he made into a hobby). He's managed to trace my mom's side of the family back hundreds of years. However, we haven't been able to get past my great grandfather on my dad's side of the family.

Now I am like so totally jealous! I would like to see something like that. I have seen some of the older pictures from the early 1900's perhaps earlier and its weird to know they are related to me!

That's incredible! I would love to do that. There would be a small problem because my last name was changed when my great grandfather came over here from Germany. It sounds really fascinating though. I wouldn't even know how to begin to do that.

That could cause a problem. I did hear that somewhere they have records of name changing from Ellis Island. Wouldn't they have the same thing for your family name change?

The best place to start is right here on the internet. There are places on the internet you can access that have billions of records!

That is awesome! What might be good is to keep like a leatherbound book or something that your future ancestors can add to!

I have followed my family history back through Americanization of the name, to name changes for various reasons and learned of loosing family at the Massacre of Glencoe in Scotland.
Clan and family were and are important to Scots. I think it was bred into us long ago.

No, I've never done it but I've thought about trying to do it. My maternal grandpa is 1 of 12 kids & they came here from Germany. It would certainly be interesting!
That's very cool that she traced the family back 300 years!!

Like another post I read it would be really neat to understand how our ancestors lived I think. How would they live in our time with all of our electronic equipment!
