Reading discussions.... and disregarding half of it in your response!

Why do people here read a discussion and then when they respond, completely MISS things that are mentioned in the original discussion and focus ONLY on the part that probably wasn't the main point? I don't know if this is lack of true reading comprehension or because some people are just scanning the post and not ACTUALLY reading it all.
Do you READ the entire post before you start responding, or are you a user who searches for discussions to answer based only on the title and then start responding before you actually read the whole thing?

Um, yes I do like to read.
Ok, fine I"ll be serious. I do read the whole thing, but sometimes I do only address one or two points in my response... I don't always read all the other responses though. Too many discussions, too little time.

If I like the topic or like today if I am having trouble finding interesting topics for me to write on then I'll read some of the answers and barge in and say hello! So, hello! You made me laugh

That is a great policy to have here because in fact that is the point of myLot. And when you add something useful then someone else can come in and add on like I am here and so on and so forth! The great thing about myLot is that we can all contribute, interact, and have fun at our own pace.

I do read the discussion before I respond. But in case I'm halfway on the discussion and could not get any idea on what to comment, I will stop and move on to the others I am more suitable commenting.
There are too long posts that I have read and still commented on them, it's because I understood the post clearly.
I also have received such comments that way too close from the topic. I seldom comment on those because I don't know what to say.

I read the discussions and responses fully if they are within five/six lines. otherwise I try to respond based on title, or the first few lines or the last few lines.

i read the whole discussion and see whether i can write any new point which is not mentioned by others, but yes what you said is absolutely true, even i have seen some people, they don't write about the serious point which we have mentioned in the discussion, they will be completely out of track, i don't understand how and why they people do like that..

It's really strange when people focus on something that isn't even important and totally ignore the POINT of the discussion lol. I admit sometimes I write a lot but maybe I have a lot to say. It's not really meant to skim, when I read posts, I actually DO read the whole thing, and I try to answer each point the poster was asking about too. The only time I get entirely off topic is if I'm chatting with a friend - or their response was off the wall, friends do that here. It just doesn't work the same if it's someone you've NEVER talked to before, or if you have no history of jokes or interactions in the real world to make it make sense.

To be honest I read the initial post of a discussion and if i find it to be something of interest to me then I read what other people have to say. So whenever I do read I do it attentively, so there isn't any disregard on my part. I just think this is something that we have to live with, I know that a lot of people come here just to earn as much money as they can. I've read articles online explaining how many posts people are able to post in a day. I think those people are the ones who just scan the discussion or don't read it at all just so they can move onto their next post quicker.

It really annoys me when I notice someone is posting like 50 discussions and my entire homepage is cluttered up with a ton of things posted by one person. This wouldn't be a problem IF the person wrote quality discussions, but the majority of users who write 50 discussions in a day are going for quantity over quality and often use terrible grammar, punctuation, and spelling - and the discussions make little to no sense.
I have noticed that earning really has more to do with how well/often you interact and interact well with other users, not just STARTING discussions but having conversations within other responses.

I see this a lot on my post. I think some of it has to do with a lot of people on here, English not being their primary language. To think folks are only reading the titles and replying is a hot mess!!!

I hate when people seem to only read the title or skim it / read only a few lines before responding. It annoys me and I used to add in a trick question taht would surely have people remarking on it just to see who DID read all of the discussions.
What gets me the most are the new ones who respond only to the title, which is why I used to also make the title not particularly pertaining to the discussion itself.
I do read an entire discussion but sometimes I either only have something to say in regards to one or two things, or I forget something / not sure how to word something so I omit it entirely.

I always read the entire discussion before responding
BUT sometimes when I read something I focus on one or two things that sparked something in me
so in my response I may get caught up in those one or two things and lose sight of the bigger picture
I dont mean to get caught up but sometimes it happens :)

For me, I am a person that always reads the entire post of the person that started the discussion and I try to respond to the discussion from there. However, I will also admit that I don't ever read all of the responses that were left before I have joined into the discussion. I really am not able to give a reason that I do things that way, it is just the way that I am.
What I have to say really bugs me is the fact that there are sometimes that people start discussions with a title that has nothing at all to do with the title of the discussion.

I have been facing this problem with a few mylotters since I started years ago. There was a similar discussion to this one and I think I also made one.
I noticed that some people just read the title without reading the whole discussion and just jump right into making responses which are obviously not related to the discussion at all.
I cannot imagine myself responding to a discussion by just looking at the title. If the discussion is too long for me to read, I just avoid it.

Well, with one topic everyone will understand it by their way, that's why their responses are different. Some just reply with a small part of a topic only, some tell their story that is similar the topic and the readers can infer their conclusion...it is the way to make discussions more interesting...Don't you think so?

Honestly I usually just read the heading if it is a question. I pretty well stay in the questions and answers room so usually that is the most important part. My reply is usually to the heading rather than to the entire discussion.

Remember: Something that isn't important to you may be very important to someone else. Something that you consider a huge issue might just be an insignificant detail to someone else, so they might focus on what they consider more important.
Alternatively, the "main" point might be supported by flawed examples, assumptions, or theories, and people point out those errors as a way of arguing against the "main" point.
Or, people might actually agree with your main point and not feel any need to talk about it, but disagree with something in the remainder of your post.
Of course, it's definitely also possible that they just fail to read. I'm just pointing out some other possibilities.
As for myself, I do read first, but sometimes someone's main point is just too boring, so I reply to the interestingest part of their post instead.

If the topic is a long one I normally skip it but sometimes I look at what others have said in there and based on these responses I too post something. I prefer short and to the point topics.

I won't lie, I have ever answered a discussion based on its title. But most of all, I would read all of the discussion to get me the understanding of the title, and then answer the question that usually follows.

It's nice to pick an angle to talk about a subject. The best discussions generally take on a life of their own regardless of what the original discussion was about.

My initial thought is that people are in a hurry. Which is actually kind of silly when it comes to myLot. You get the most credit for the quality posts, not just a smidge here in there that missed the point. I try to read all of a post - by try I mean - if I read a bit and find it boring then I will move on and find something else to read. If I don't read the whole thing, typically, I will not respond. I don't always respond to everything said because then its like ber-batum (whatever that word is?) what they just said only in my words... or something like that. I choose what I want to respond to but I try not to miss the point in my response.
