How do you encourage someone to do their best?

I just finish my class and I feel a little sad because some of my students looked not interested with our lessons. I teach in an ESL style academy. I am a very active and fun teacher. So I am expecting no dull moments from my students because there isn't in my opinion. I have tried giving them simple gifts that cannot be puchased outside ... a printed little stars that says "Excellent!". Then I give them points, if tehy have accumulated 100 points, they can pick from the box of goodies. If for example they have save 10 stars, they could exchange it for school supplies too. For students 3 to 6, it's not much of a problem because as long as you give them a hug, a kiss and play with them, it's alright. Life is great. I like them. They are very simple people with simple needs. For students 7 to 12, they are having personalities of their own now. The stars and points may still work but not for long. I usually ask the parents help to also encourage them. For students 13 to 16, I don't give gifts anymore, my motherly words are enough but I sound like their mom, they hate me for that. So to stop me from talking or sounding like their moms, they just follow and behave. If youu have children in any of these age groups, how do you encourage them to study more? How do you make them do their best by not pressuring them? How do you make someone love what they are doing even at a young age?

I think, the best way would be adding spice to how you present your lessons. Teenagers have different kind of interest when they reach that stage in life. You should make your class more interactive and ask them what they want to do or say. Maybe one time you could tell them to write something about what they want in life when they grow up or what interests them most, then you can discuss all of them in class.

I also think it is good to be more interactive and to inspire others. I think more inspiration more better people will do in life.

Hi jenny1015, Okay. Thank you so much for your suggestions. I agree that the class should be more interactive. We have several interactive activities but the parents complain that they are not learning instead they are just playing. So we end up reading. I try to do a role playing and pair work too but I tell the kids to minimize the noise or else their parents will think we are playing instead of doing interactive activities.

Encourage children to follow their interest, then you can break barriers with them.Be a genuine friend. Find out what they like most and include that part also in their lessons. For example if they like to answer quizzes, include them as part of their studies. Give short answers so that their full attention is got. Make difficult answers easy by asking them to picture the answer in small themes. Ask them to collect information about subjects and to present them in an interesting way. Involve them in activities that will make them interested in what you want them to know. Love them and make them involved in activities that contribute to their confidence and which will also help them to get interested in their studies.

Hi rubyroy, Your ideas are great. I will put it into action. It will take some preparation and it would depend on the students ability to learn but I will do my best. I will fully involve them and make them part of every thing we do. Traditional teaching is very boring so we will have a lot of interactions.

If i really care about someone and want them to do the best job for themsellves as well as none else, i will stir up any encouragement I can. Geing someone to to their best is encouragement for both of us. this person succeeds in what they do and we are there to watch it happen and be inspired by it.

That's so great. I get your point, you can only encourage someone if you are also motivated to motivate him/her. Trust and commitment should be needed. I will take note of these. Thanks for the support.

Well, you have some very good responses here! Interest and encouragement seem to be the main themes of the responses. I can only add an example of a good teacher when I was in high school, many years ago. As most of the other kids in my history class I was not interested. History was boring. But that year I had a teacher who related facts in history to things we were interested in. For example, he turned the story of Helen of Troy into a love story. He immediately got our attention. His theory was that we could remember all the words to the latest rock & roll songs but we couldn't remember one date from history. We knew all the popular singers names but we couldn't remember the names of important historical figures. They didn't seem (to us) relevant to our lives. He drew parallels and presented facts in such a way that they became relevant. We gained a better understanding of major historical events. I finally passed a history exam! Hope this helps a little. You are such a dedicated teacher! I wish you success.

I am also a teacher of English and I felt my class learned more the noisier it was, so we had lots of activities so that they could practise what they had just learned. They were adults though and that helped. It might be useful to look back at the teachers who inspired and interested you when you were young. I remember a teacher of religion who inspired me because she had actually been put in a concentration camp in China during WW2. She was a living example of what she believed. There was an English teacher I remember who had to work us really hard with grammar for our final exams, which we hated. She sorted us out according to our voices and encouraged us to speak poetry together and it somehow harmonised. I don't know how she managed this but it gave me a love of poetry and it softened all those grammar lessons.

hi.. i am a student at a college and i think that i am suitable to answer your queeation. yeah.having encouragement is the most important thing in study.coz it can stimulate more potential. i frequently feel upset when i did not make something and just thought that i cannt do other things else.but i am luck to meet a teacher who alway besides me. you just need to tell him that he is the best, maybe he are not good at something, but that doesnt mean he cannt make other things perfect, and never scold a student, coz it has a great influence in their mind

You are a good student. We all need encouragement not just for studying but I agree that if you scold a student especially in front of a lot of students, it will just create a barrier or gap to you and to achieving his future. I cannot always be by the sides of my students maybe I could create a buddy-buddy system to help them with their lessons. A friend whom they will not feel shy and a friend who is also willing to share their talent. Keep up the good habit of studying hard.

i do teach students of various age. You can do alot of things to encourage them and make them to participate more in clas for students of 7 to 12, like you can do voting for best student in a week and giving plyus points in monthlky tests. And fr students of age 13 to 16 just be like their friend. Share your secrets keep their secrets. A students only participate activly whn he/she finds a teacher on whome they can trust whose is like their friend not like thier parents:D best of luck hope it works for u

Gee, thanks. I will try them. I am a little strict. I will loosen up a little and be more reachable. You are right, maybe, lately I had been wishing they would learn a lot so I had been a disciplinarian. Okay. Thanks for reminding me.

I think it is always good to encourage others to do their best in life and work. I think when people are motivated they do best. I also believe that when children are motivated they tend to do better in life. I think it is good to say some good words to children and inspire them in life.

Yes, I totally agree with you. I also inspire them with students who have great achievements and not force them to do things but instead let them know the importance why we are doing such activities. My care and concern for them is not just for the job but like my own. I wnat to give importance to the trust their parents have given me. I will not give up. I will continue to find ways to make them enjoy learning.

Good to hear about your idea. Encouragement is important to every one, it is the best way to find out the real skills and talents. Each and every one is having unique skills and talents, if we encourage them in their field, surely they will achieve a lot with their talent. Motivation and encouragement is the key to achieve a lot in our life, without encouragement it is really hard to achieve our goal. We need encouragement from our childhood till end. Our encouragement will come from our parents, good friends and relatives. We must encourage our kids in various ways to express their real talents and achieve a lot in their life. During school days we must encourage them to study well as well as take part in sports and cultural program. Merely education only don't help them to shine in their life, with education we must motivate them to participate in sports programs, Social service, cultural activities in their school days and give training in various essential things. We can offer them some surprise gift and their favorite things, if they get good marks in their lessons and get prizes in their extra curricular activities. We must find out their talents and encourage them to achieve in their field, don't force your kid to select your favorite course in college, allow them to take any course as per their wish, if their education is based on their interest they will get good marks easily with their interest. After finishing the college they are searching for the job, at that time as a parent we must keep patience and don't blame them for their jobless days, we must encourage them to find a proper job as well as try our maximum to help them in all the possible ways to get a good job for them. Since encouragement is important to get progress, so we must encourage our friends and family persons as much as we can to get their progress.

Thank you and I agree with you. Motivation and encouragement don't just come or given at school. It starts with teh family member or people close to the people being motivated. Our parents play a great part in it. I am glad my parents did their job well. I wish I could also talk to the parents of my students to be able to work with them as we equipped the children for a better future. For me, good students become good people, good people become good citizen and then it will influence the whole society and the country. Thank you so much for sharing detailed opinion about your views on how to encourage someone.

I really appreciate your steps to make your students encouraged and to do their best. Everything is directly related as if they are encouraged then they'll definitely pay more attention towards what their teachers are trying to teach them and hence they learn with a greater pace. Alongwith their learning at a greater pace they will be learning the concepts permanently and long lasting and there will not be any need of mugging the text just for passing. By building their encouragement they will definitely pass with very good marks and this will also encourage them further for building some new, innovative projects. I think for encouragement they should be made participate in discussions in class and if the class will be more interactive and supportive then they will be self-encouraged to speak up and share their ideas. I also believe that demonstration, illustration and project activities will also help them get motivate as they will become interested in that topic if they are able to perform and seeing the same as they have read in the theories. So try to make class more interactive, practicals oriented and they will be encouraged definitely. Otherwise if few of them are then also not getting motivated by all these and not actively participate in activities then you should interact with them personally and try to find out the cause and listen to them for their ideas as how they want your lecture to happen. I am very sure that you will be getting some very good ideas. Try this, though I am not an expert but this is just a thought and suggestion.
