Moving Boxes

I find moving to be a huge challenge with so many boxes and not enough hours in a day. We moved in the fall of last year and unfortunately there are still unpacked boxes. I certainly thought my living room wouldn't have any boxes, but there are still a couple. The really bad part is I get started sorting a box and somebody wants me to do something else.
I'm hoping before Christmas that my living room will be ready to be decorated without tripping over a box. Its hard to believe how much stuff we moved into our new place.
How long did it take you to sort boxes after moving? Did it take longer than expected?

Oh my goodness, you have no idea. My husband and I have moved 54 times in our lifetime. It seems we have boxes stacked forever. We no sooner get moved in and it takes quite a while since I do all the unpacking and putting away. Being disabled makes the process quite long too. This last move was this May. We still have boxes everywhere and still have to make another trip to our old house to gather up odds and ends and my husband fish tanks from his hatchery too. (No fish in them - we transported all to the new place.)
We have one room that is full. I do have about three boxes left in the living room, a few in the dining room, some bins of clothes to sort through and separate for an upcoming garage sale which are stacked in the office until we pick a date for the sale. Plus there are still boxes of papers that have to find a home that have to be kept.
The last move took me a year to get through everything. After 36 years you seem to have a lot of stuff to go through.
I do a little each day and it all gets sorted slowly. Patience and persistence is what is needed. I have been busy and have more then 3/4 of everything unpacked and placed already. But then again I have done this more times than anyone. Just praying my husband doesn't get relocated again. I like this house and it would be nice to live somewhere for more than a year or two.
Good luck!

My husband was in the military, so I understand moving often. The bad part is when he left the service we stopped moving and just started adding a lot of stuff. Its sad to know that we kept stuff that nobody even looked at occasionally.
I have started doing a little a day, as that is easier to actually stay on the task and it has been going down. Several of these boxes are tax papers, so will have to see how long we have stored them.
Thanks for posting and I'm glad we aren't moving every year or two, as moving is hard work.

I hope to retire in Southern California where we are located now. The one thing about moving is I did get rid of a lot and wouldn't have without a move. Thanks and really enjoyed this topic.

My husband was in the Navy for 21 years but when he got out he got a job as an electro-mechanical engineer. That job requires moving a lot too. We have been in 4 states in the past 4 years. This is exhausting. It isn't bad with a few years in between. Now we are getting to old to do this anymore - too much work and it gets harder every time now.
We all tend to collect a lot of stuff or receive a lot of things you just can't get rid of because of whom it may have come from. Papers do take up a lot of space but you have to hold onto everything for 7 years. And the stacks add up.
I hope we can at least get everything unpacked, sorted and have a major garage sale and settle for a while and maybe stay here until we retire. That would be nice.

Well it didn't take longer unless someone would lend a hand to help you. Fixing or sorting things really consumes a lot of time, it's getting boring mostly if you work alone. well, goodluck to you my friend...by the way, advance Merry Christmas!!! hohohoho....=)

I think my husband doesn't want to see what had been in the garage for years. Some of the stuff really should have been tossed or donated long ago like the cloth diapers and baby clothes. A charity would get some use from some of the baby items. Our youngest is in college and she doesn't plan to marry anytime soon. Our oldest is married and has no plans to have children. Thanks for posting.

That is true, if it wasn't need in the four years won't need in the future. I laughed at your post and think all these boxes have a lot of garage items that will be leaving soon. Thanks for the post.

Our problem was we hadn't moved in over 20 years, so the garage was full of stuff that hadn't been looked at in a long time. It was hard to believe what had been saved. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for posting. I must admit its been interesting to see what was in some of these boxes, as the ones from the garage were there a long time.

Moving houses is such a chore for me, I really have a hard time packing and unpacking. I hate it so much! We haven't unpacked boxes that have been in our garage for more than a year, thank goodness the moving boxes we got from are still in perfect condition (and everything in the box is also bubble wrapped and I believe that makes a huge difference. Hopefully in the future we won't be needing to move again!
