Police around the world...

I would like to know how Policemen act around the world. Here in Greece Policemen are just like any other public servant, sleeping....always. They sit around and do not make rounds in cities or villages. And some of them even turn away from trouble. No one tells them to do their job. You can walk for hours in a city and not see one. Wouldn't less crime happen or some would get caught in the act if they were out in the streets? Some of them take bribes to sell protection or even traffic drugs. There are two forces, crime Police and road Police. Road Policemen are even worse. All they do is hide somewhere and drink coffee. And now with the crisis they all want a raise. What about people out of a job? At least they get a paycheck each month. A lot more to say but that gives you an idea. How are things in your place?

Here in India too policeman sleep always. But this may not be applicable to everyone as there are still many dedicated policeman who perform or do their duty with utmost honestly and you can see transpiracy in their work. However you can easily notice policemen taking open bribes on roads etc. from export or transport vehicle drivers. This may be called a additional toll tax. There are many cases in which these people have showed bravery and devoted their whole life for duty. However the corruption rate is in rise in this department and the situation is worsening. There is need of better vigilance and law to stop this bureaucratic corruption and sleep always attitude. The renovation or may called revolution is to be propagated and made a propaganda among masses. This would require time but once it gets happen everything would be much better. In other government departments the situation is exactly the same.

No shame at all. They become criminals, but they do not care at all.

It is not only in your country, officers in the other side of your country commit crimes. But, I don't want to put it in general. Some police officers are still dedicated to their job.

The spelling "police" defines itself about their way of living. P = power. O = order. L = Law. I = income. C = commission. E = encounter. Worse,worse.. most of them are worse than other professions. same here like your country. have a nice time.

Over here they say if you can't find a cop look in Dunkin' Donuts. They are known for hanging around doughnut shops. In my town they're always driving around at night. Or they find a sneaky place to park so they can sleep or catch speeders, I'm not sure which. I see them mostly at night if I go to the store late. I usually stay up all night and sleep all day. So if I go to the store for water or a snack it's about 11pm. They have a place right near my street where it's dark, kind of behind a building, where they can see the road but you can't see them until it's too late if you're speeding and they wake up and catch you. And of course people say in the big cities there's a lot of corruption. I think they're pretty much the same everywhere.

They might be the same, but in the US they do work a little. Here all they do is sit around. No donuts here, or else they would all be fat!

Friend, Greece and India seems to share the same problems in every walks of our life. Our traffic is chaotic like yours and our streets are full of potholes, then to talk about our police department,I think both our police department and yours must have had the same gene running in their vein to be ditto like this. You have explained the trait of our policemen with such accurate details,I thought it was an Indian complaining about our policemen. We had trade with from you from long ago,so must be our people might have intermingled with each other in the past to produce same characters and traits.

India has a lot of similarities with Greece. Greek Policemen think they are something like kings.

Here in UK police are very active and many are polite and honest. Police here were generally above political manipulation until that dire PM Thatcher used them for political ends contrary to British normal practice. That political use broke or weakened the trust of the police that is necessary here, where we are policed not be force, as for instance are the Americans, but by consent. Whether such trust can be regained and to what degree remains to be seen all the best urban

Greek Policemen are polite but that's like 60%. The rest are plain rude.

I thought Greece government borrow so much money to pay public employees super high salary with plenty of perks and benefits, that include all policemen and policewomen. Well! at least according to the Greece officials' account on their runaway national debts of how the borrowed money was spent. That is just aweful they sleep all the time while on duty with so high salary already in placed, i guess it is the official culture and behavior they need to adopt in order to become police men and women in order to protect the public safety, or there is other reasons behind this behavior, may be they are just overwork and suffer burnt out in their job due to too much night hours overtime, that drive them to sleep while performing their official duty in the day, it is quite common occurance for those cops that go moonlighting previous night and still require to report for duty in the next day, they are making plenty of $$$ working in such manner, with continual day and night working hours a day.

I am sure you know the reason why they like to sleep on the job, it is a lot safer to do that than go on patrolling in the street, it is almost certain policeman will never have to confront any violent criminal in his dream than actually going around the neighborhood upheld his sworn oath of 'to serve and protect.' Police is not stupid public employees or too lazy, it is the most sensible thing to do for the sake of their own safety.

I remember in Brno, Chezh Republic, the Police was there in minutes for an incident. In Greece that would take up to an hour.
