I was thinking why do we all wish to be older when we are young?

Then when we do get older we wish we never grew up! We realize that we had it made when we are young! We start to get old as soon as we are born. So why do we wish our lives away? So we can do things that the older people do. Driving , drinking, smoking, or what ever is for the older people. What a waste of time. What do you think? How old are you? Me I am almost 58 and reflect some time on my wasted youth , with regrets or maybe not. I am still learning new things. So maybe not all was wasted...LOL

Many young people do it because they think they will be able to do a lot more things which although mostly true is not necessarily a good thing especially considering what some of the things are. I know that when I was eight years old, I thought this is a great age to be and I wished that I could stay eight forever. But then in many ways I have always been a bit unique and certainly not one to follow peer pressure.

I think it's natural to want what we can't have. We used to look up to adults and think they were so cool and life was easy and then we get to their places and we find out how life was easy and now we have all these worries and things changed. Not that I would like to go back and be a teenager, but still we can see the good things we had there and now.

Hi Jenny. I am hoping and praying that younger people will read this discussion and the responses maybe it will help them to realize how good they have it when they are young. It is hard to be the one to make all the decisions . Thanks for your comments.

Your correct common thinking and question you can find around us specially children and others... Is it a trend of thinking to become older and the older to become teen again. For me no logically explanation because if such wish would be granted the wisher will suffer the consequenses for sure. People are so hurry, no satisfaction, no patience they wanted thing happened in the twinkle of an eyes. Other than try to feel the goodness of life given everyday, every minutes of our life.

We wish we were older when we're young for the same reason we wish we were younger when we're old: to have both the ability- and the necessary permission-to do things (when we're young, we have the first but not the second; when we're old, we have/don't-need the latter and lack the former).

Many children wished to be old just to do things that adult people do and what they do not know is that to be an adult is really hard and have lots of responsibilities to face.I am 30 years old right now and I also do think that I have wasted my time but I want to change it so going to make my life better.Children should enjoy their life in a better way so that they would not end up regretting on things. They should be the one decide for them self and parents should support, guide them and should not manipulate their children's life.

Hi Blinjk and welcome to my lot. All we can do is take one moment at a time and try not to waste time on things that really won't matter in the end. Good luck and God bless!

hi dear free_man, not every young person had it made. Allright I had it made when it came to food on the table and clean clothes in the closet but that was it. Growing up for me meant, at least one tiny step out of that emotional cage I was in. Being at least technically able to sign what I want and do what I thought is right for me. Putting money on the savings book myself and sometimes withdrawing a bit when needed. (very seldom). Writing my own absent excuses from school (I never messed with it and was really ill when I wrote one). BUT as this freedom of getting mature was only technically on the paper...... I soooo wished for distance from said cage (family) since then and now with almost 50 that dream came true a little over a year ago. Unfortunately I have let opportunities pass me by in these younger years, even when I started earning my own money, cause I still was under that family influence. There are, unfortunately, things I did not do and now I am too old to. There is a lot of regrets now, basically. But I am a happy camper inspite of these missed opportunities because now its MY life, MY decisions, MY successes and failures, and no commitment any more to that biological family who is guilty of brainwashing and robbing me of my own life......loooong into my adulthood....... I hope I have enough time left on this planet to enjoy life and to make up for lost decades, not only lost years.

I agree. Im just 26 and Im missing my childhood days so much! I think the grass is greener on the other side phenomenon holds true. I hate being a grown up, life is no fun wah! But I hope it will get better someday and I can look back at my life with fond memories. I dont plan on getting married or having kids. So I guess i have a lot of time to understand myself.

Hi Shivanisd and welcome to my lot. I don't want to be a child again but I do miss those care free days where all we had to do was play. The bible teaches us how to enjoy this life. This man can teach you about the bible and he can show you the books that will teach us all to live our lives being happy. http://www.shepherdschapel.com/index.htm We listen to him through the week. Our lives went from a lot of BS to hardly any BS. Thank God!

A very admirable temperament sir. We should never give up and believe that there is no age when we cannot learn. I too used to think of getting older when I was a kid ans got to see adults enjoying. I am now in my latter teenage and with all maturity, I know what I used to think and why. Though I never thought of enjoying my years by getting indulged in drinking and I abide by my thoughts, I have involved in some activities which perhaps I shouldn't have done. But now I try and correct myself wherever and whenever possible. I am also studying in a very good environment so see it as a good opportunity to establish myself well in future.

For me, my life was so very interesting. Growing from childhood to an adult, it was a long journey in a golden years. I admired people cherish their lives as they grow older. They perceived aging as a beauty to learn something through the years of existence.

Well, i think, the limitation of our knowledge when we are still young makes us yearn to become older. When we were young, we are usually predominantly surrounded by adults. And being so immature, we can see them as models of our future and having a happy, contented life. One more thing, I guess, is as a child we are limited to our actions. People will always say, "you can do that when you grow up" or "it's only for adults my dear". But then as we grow old and become adults, we realize that it isn't that easy to deal with life.

Hi Lingling and welcome to my lot. Sorry for the late response but had computer problems. You hit the nail on the head with your response. I am hopping this discussion will lead younger people to stop and look at how good they have it being young and someone else taking care of them. If I had listen to a friend of mine when I was about 18 I might not have had such a hard life. If I had gone to this Christian school I might have gone down a different path. It took me a long time to figure out that if I do what is good in Gods eyes life can be a lot better. Thank you for your response.

I understand what you are saying. I remember wishing I was Older when I was a kid now I often find myself wishing I was a kid again. I almost long for the days of having nothing to worry about except playing. Even going to school doesnt seem like a bad thing now. I wish there was a way to make kids understand how good they have it right now and to enjoy their childhood while they can instead of wishing it away.
