Recently, I purchased a skirt. It's long, a lovely, drapey, fine knit fabric in a muddy colour called graphite. It looks fabulous with boots and leggings and ballets and all my tops go with it. It has fast become my favourite skirt. So naturally, when I hung it on the clothes line with all ther other washing, this one item is the very one my goat Pickles made a bee-line for. He has a lot of class this goat of mine. He only chews my new stuff, my best stuff or my favourite stuff. I'm asking for my crafty friends if they have any suggestions on how to repair it. Over to you ladies...gents too if you have any ideas.

You should get the goat some clothes... like they do for pet dogs, cats, and many others. Or maybe the goat wants to see you in a mini

Hi thesids, he can get all the clothes he wants...off the clothesline. He can often be seen around the back yard with one of my bras tangled round his horns. He doesn't want to see me in a mini...he wants to see me offering him a biscuit!!

Hmm...a biscuit in a mini...that would look pretty silly wouldn't it? I don't think I could find a mini to fit a biscuit but I guess I could maker one.

You did not say if he chewed just the bottom or elsewhere. If he ruining the bottom you can buy some lace and sew it around the skirt. You can also get some fabric in a like or contrasting color and and sew it on. If Pickles chewed some holes in random places you can patch them and attach pretty silk flowers or something similar to the patches or patch them with glittery, sequined material. You need to find a way to keep Pickles away from your clothesline! Perhaps dry your favorite things indoors next time!

What fabulous ideas you have. The part of the hem in the photo is the only damage fortunately. There's no way to keep him away from the clothes line and I am now taking my good things inside to dry. I usually take my delicates inside to dry but I'll be taking my best stuff in side in future too.

Ahhh! Now there's a good idea. Next time I travel to the next big town, I'll go to the craft/fabric/haberdashery store and see what I can find. I could live with lace on the bottom. Thanks Elic

I just turn hems up about 20mm these days and do a straight stitch. Finding a suitable lace will be the hard part.

That's my favorite "cheat" for hems that are too short - heck, even just getting out of sewing hems all together!

Oh my! i'd go bezerk if same thing happens to me! you might need to shorten the length or if you can patch it under and sew over it without too much notice on how it was sewn then maybe it would still look nice.

He's a beauty is my Pickles - He's also the devil and a cheeky bugger.
I think I will have to go with the patch idea and hope people don't notice it down the bottom of the skirt. I was pretty cranky but my harsh words (actually, I swore at him) have no effect what-so-ever, so I just get on with things. He knows he is a cheeky bugger.

Hi MsTickle, I never knew you had a goat, and a silly billy goat at that. Are you sure he isn't a scapegoat? No idea how to mend skirts. Like Pickles, I have, in the dim and distant past, been in a similar 'pickle' myself, ripping off 'ladies' skirts in my haste to ermmm, see what was underneath, and occasionally with my teeth too. Ahhhh, them were the days!

Yep, that's how Pickles go his name...he was always in some sort of Pickle. I got him when he was a kid and carried him home in the front seat of my friends car. If you could see the size of him now...he's big. Actually I have two goats. Tulip is my nanny goat whom I rescued as well. Just a thought, skirts don't need to be ripped off ladies with teeth or otherwise. All you need do is lift them up.

oh poor MsTickle, I am so sorry that your goat went for your favorite skirt and made the hem a snack...... Unfortunately I am not good at sewing and I am a klutz in all these typical female virtues......so I cant help, aside from a big hug to you

Hug received and sent back sweety. It is much appreciated. I love him dearly but he can be truly diabolical at times...in true goat fashion. He thinks he is funny!

hi mstickle if the tear or chewed out place is near the bottom'you might be able to either shorten it or make a pleat there so it looks like it belonged there.or if it is on a side seam you might be able to cut out the chewed spot and seam it back up those are all the s uggestions I can think of,.

Hi Hatley, I'm tall and it's really difficult to find clothing that is a good length. This skirt is a perfect length and I really don't want to shorten it. I found some iron-on repair fabric in my sewing box so I will try that I think. I just need to work out how to bring it all together as the skirt fabric is damaged.

My, the goat does have good taste... He sounds like a cat--go after the best stuff and leave the rest. Thankfully, my cats usually stick to just sleeping or rolling on my stuff--no chomping. I did, however, used to live with a feline niece who would manage to fish out and drag my nicest lingerie out of the hamper and into the litter box; she was and still is too smart for her own good. I like the idea of adding lace over the affected area--and making a point of drying it inside instead of out on the line.

Hmm, I wonder what the message was with the lingerie? I have been telling myself not to hang certain things on the line for months but he teases me and doesn't touch anything for ages then, when I am lulled back into that false sense of security he attacks.

My goodness that Pickles has good taste..LOL. You may have to make it a bit shorter than it was before. Oh..there is that stylish uneven hem that I have seen some long skirts have. Like this....V-V-V You'll have to hang it up high enough so that rotten Pickles can't get to it next time though or we will have to make you a mini-skirt!

Hi Jen, Yep, he has a lot of class that goat. I have quite a few tops and jackets with the pointed bit and I like that look in tops but not skirts I'm afraid. I'm going to try and make a line on the front verandah to hang stuff because I don't like wet or damp things hanging around inside too much. I do hang things to dry in the bathroom though and then I leave the big window wide open. No-one wants to see a sixty year old, fat lady in a mini sweety so I won't be going there lol.

Tickle, do you interested to have a shorter skirt? Because cutting and making it shorter is the easiest way to solve your problem. Another solution is, sew some pretty laces to the bottom of your skirt, covering that ugly area. I will always amend it that way, if i don't want my lovely skirt to go much shorter. But, this type of style may not suit to every ladies. How you think?

Hello dear friend, a few others suggested shortening my skirt but the length is perfect and what I like most about it. Being quite tall, it's not often I find clothing that is such a good length for me. One other responder also suggested lace and I think that is the best way to go. Now, my task is to find a suitable lace. Thanks for the great suggestions.

Well it does get your goat does it not. Looks like your favorite new skirt will have to get shorter.

Hi telmesh...yes, it does! One of the nicest things about this skirt is the length...it's perfect just as it is. Shortening it will be a last resort.
