Ever have a pen pal?

Watching Arthur with my lil guy they are talking about pen pals, you know via paper not internet. I had several I had two from England, one from France, and one from New Zealand. I wrote to one from England til we were nearly 20. My Mother had a couple pen pals when I was growing up one was from Illinois another in Pennsylvania. I did write to both for fun and I wrote to the one in Illinois for a couple years til she had been placed in a nursing home. Did you ever have a pen pal when you were growing up? If so was the pen pal from your country or from another place in the world?

I had about 50 at one time, most of my free time was spent writing letters. I gradually lost touch with them all unfortunately, although I just write to my friends instead now :)

Wow! I couldn't imagine keeping track of 50 people and writing to every single one. I'm sure the postal services would appreciate if you started up again :)

Let me start off by saying, I LOVE Arthur!! and I'm a grown woman[em]rofl[/em Yes, years ago I had a couple of pen pals...they were in prison...hey, they need love TOO, so don't judge me. I have a very romanticized view of the whole pen pal thing. Have you ever seen that movie where that man and lady write to each other for YEARS, decades even?? And they send each other packages and books and the whole bit?? I LOVE that movie, although I don't remember the name of it. I like writing letters with pencil, paper, envelope, stamps. I can get positively giddy over a good INK pen! Soooo romantic. But even pen-paling via computer can be romantic, a la "You've Got Mail." I LOVE that movie, I've watched it probably 20 or 30 times, maybe more.

I used to have 22 pen pals from all over the world but that was before the days of the Internet. I wouldn't even know where to get them anymore.

I don't know either. I know our teacher ordered us our penpals thru some sort of service. I've tried having online friends & their kids write to my kids even via e-mail and that petered out after I'd say 2-3 messages.

I had three back in high school. One was from Canada, second from the Philippines, and third from the US. The second and third were short-lived, less than a year only I think. They both were busy though, even busier than I am. I exchanged letters with the first pen pal from Canada (she was also Filipina but was born and raised in Manitoba) for like 3 or 4 years. We would confide to each other about our love life, actually I only had crushes then haha, whereas she had this long-standing on and off relationship with the father of her baby. We're still friends on Facebook and chat from time to time. I did end up meeting her twice during her few trips to the Philippines. We've been friends for 18 years.

Wow! You are lucky that your friendship has lasted so long! I wish I could find the one I wrote to the longest on facebook but I'm guessing she's long been married and has a new name and doesn't use her maiden on facebook :(

I loved having a penpal when I was younger. I can't remember if it was a program they did in school for us or where I got it from. I think mine was from the same country just another state. It was always fun getting the letters. No one sends cards or letters these days. I would even enjoy doing that today. It's fun to get mail. Anyone want to be my penpal :)

Ours were started thru school via some sort of agency that sold addresses of kids of similar ages. How they got the names I ave no idea.

Yes! When I was sixteen I found a site that you could pick up a Christian pen pal. I made friends with a couple of girls around my age. We kept in touch for ages. One of them I still have as a Facebook friend although we really haven't kept in touch for a few years. One was from Alabama and one was from Florida.

I had a lot of pen pals when I was a teenager. Some of them were from my own country and some of them were from other countries around the world. I had penpals from Germany, France, Hungary, Finland, Italy, Greece, the UK, the US, Costa Rica, Brazil, Ghana, South Africa, India, Thailand, China etc. I had a lot of pen pals from around the world because as a teenager I was already very interested in other countries and I found it really interesting to learn about their countries and cultures through their letters. My longest friendship lasted 11 years, but many of the others were much shorter.

I did. when I was junior high school -about 7 years ago, I had several pen pals and I'm really addictive with sending & receive letter activity. as I remember, it was very popular that time and I'm very happy that I have some pen pals. that time, I didn't have cellphone yet and social network was not popular yet, I think that's the strong reason why having pen pals could be so interisting

Hi friend! When I was in high school, I used to have several penpals from my country. However, when I entered in college, I was not able to reply to their letters because I became so busy with the part time job I had. As of now, I don't have any pen pal anymore and most of my friends I can contact through phone or online.

Yes that is what happened to the penpal that lasted the longest. She went off to college and I'd say within the first year or two of that is when things fizzled out.

Ah...those were the days. I remember having a couple of pen pals when i was still in grade school. Both were from the US and were about my age. I remember that it was really fun reading about what their lives were like which was so different from mine considering our different cultures. It went on for about a couple of years then things just kinda fizzled out. I guess it was because we were growing up and went on to have different interests. I think I still have those letters kept somewhere. :)

I too run across the occasional letter or envelope. Which then makes me wonder what they are up to and if I sent information to the old address would they get it or respond?

I did have a pen pal while in junior high and she was from Calgary, Canada and knew French. That's about as exotic as I get but I have written many friends over the years but that seemed to fizzle out on their end. Something about not having time, being too busy, having kids- blah, blah, blah...I do write an aunt I have who lives in the South. She loves getting and reading her mail as do I. There's something very nostalgic and special about reading a letter via the post.

The relationship that I had with the girl that I'm going to talk about was actually a traditional friendship at first, but she was a foreign exchange student and when her year here in the US was over, she had to go back to Germany. After she went back home, she and I wrote each other for a couple of years. Then, I guess that we both got really busy with college and being young adults and we lost touch with each other. I would love to be able to look her up on facebook, but I can only remember her first name, Uta and not her last name. It always was a huge pleasure to me when she would send me a letter and I would get it all the way from Germany.

I never had a pen pal. I'm not really planning to have one because I find it as a hassle. I've got many friends here and for security purposes, I'd rather not have a random someone know my address. Nowadays, it's really difficult to trust anyone. Better be safe than sorry. That's just my opinion.

Yes is my answer. I have a pen pal years ago. It was introduced or should I say, her mom gave me their address. Her mom, is a patient where my father had his physical therapy and rehab. She is from South Korea and I'm from the Philippines. And so we had a constant exchange of mails, letter, cards. Until now, I still remember the picture of a young lady. I wonder, where she is now, I haven't received any message from her in a decade now. She never replied to my letters and she has no facebook account or whatsoever. Thanks

I had a penfriend from Germany when I was young. I got her through the school. I think it was organised to try and heal relationships between our two countries. We wrote for a while but my parents did not approve, her family were obviously wealthy, whereas we were poor. She wanted me to visit her, but we could not afford it and it would have been embarrassing to invite her to visit me. In the end it petered out.

Yes, I had a pen pal during my days in secondary school. Because I was learning the Japanese language, it was very interesting to communicate with a Japanese student. I was very excited because I could interact with someone from another culture. Japanese culture has always fascinated me, which is the reason I took Japanese classes. Our teacher had me and my classmates write letters to them a few times. Although it lasted only for a year, I thought that it was a worthwhile experience.
