myLot does not encourage precis writing!

While at school it was dinned into us about the benefit of writing to the point and not being verbose. If one can say it one sentence it would draw more attention than someone saying the same thing writing paragraphs. But woe betide me. Here in myLot the more you write the more you are appreciated. A one liner will not even be looked at. If one can precis one's response in one line why should it be ignored. Your views please.

I look at all responses I get and typically respond unless I just don't have a thing to say. Quality is different for everyone whether 1 line or 10 I am sure myLot considers this.

Where do myLot tell us that one line will not be looked at?

You surely know when I say 'looked at'it means it does not get as much recognition as a response or comment that has more lines. It is eleven in the morning here in India. I thought you would be still sleeping at this time!

It is 7.36 here and I am always here for breakfast From my own experience, a lot of reading in the FAQs and Guidelines (and from a lot of logical thinking too), if a one line response (we are not talking about comments yet) adds to the topic and furthers the discussion, then it IS worthwhile. There was no need for me, in this response, to add more, One line was enough and it has caused you to come and add more, therefore why should it not be worth something? I am also convinced that short concise responses (we are not talking about comments yet) are worth much much more than a long response that rambles on and on, going all around the houses before getting to the point. However, my question went unanswered: if you can point me to where myLot tell us that one line will not be considered then I will rest my case As for comments (we can talk about them now), just the same as in an offline conversation, sometimes all that is needed is a short concise comment. If that short concise, even one word, comment furthers the topic that is being dicsussed, then, as myLot is a discussion site, why should it not be considered? We earn for our overall participation, not for how many 'posts' (what defines 'a post' here anyway?) therefore everything is considered, if it is relevant and quality.

I cannot point out and tell you where myLot has said it. myLot should encourage quality one liners. It will save them a lot of time.

Hi all! Your idea/suggestion per se is not bad. However, I hold the view that precis writing is an art and it is a difficult art, which can not be mastered by everyone. Moreover, everyone can not have a good command over English (remember it is our second language and same may be the case with other mylotters). I have seen one or two mylotters who would always start a one line discussion and you would get prompted to reply. (Those lotters are no longer active now). I hope they use to earn through their posts. I just can not make out a precis either in my responses or in my discussions. Have a great day!

Indeed, some people here in mylot constructs inappropriate sentences, use wrong words and even write grammatically incorrect lines. However, this is still a free media on expressing out ideas and thoughts and should not be criticize. It will be inappropriate to have such "english or writing tests" for you to become a member of this site. I think a good remedy for this would be ignoring those mylotters having such qualities, or maybe rating them negatively.

It is absolutely WRONG and a violation to criticise or rate negatively those users who are not proficient in English In the Guidelines we are told specifically: "Don't Post discussions, responses or comments criticizing members for bad/broken English or bad spelling. Everyone is welcome at myLot, we have users from all around the world and they are welcome regardless of their proficiency with the English Language." http://www.mylot.com/o/guidelines.aspx

so we do not need grammar police or precis writing police, precise to me is the right spelling but the precis writer uses that lol after all this is not a class in College or the University.

Mylot is not a place for literary skills or even fluency. I've no idea whether quality or quality brings in the cents so I keep it short if I am busy and am more verbose if I have the time. Today I do not have the time...
@allknowing (132625)

That's the point. No one knows whether it is quality or quantity that brings in the cents But if we attempted to write effectively and to the point that would save a lot of our time. There are many here who can do that.

I agree that short posts should be counted, too, especially those cleverly written. But perhaps the forum admins want to be assured that the posts be made with a lot of thoughts and avoid spams. :)

No allknowing! I have seen one liners carrying a wealth of meaning; unfortunately, here if someone resorts to one liners like 'True. You are right' or something totally irrelevant but in a short sentence,we do not feel like giving a second glance.Otherwise people do appreciate it if you write short answers too.

It is very few like you who will understand that one liners are also packed with quality content. There is a general view that to earn one must write a lot. If myLot encourages to the point responses, we will see a change here.

In the course of my participation here I have come across views that talk of quantity with quality earning more but in fact I feel if a short response or comment is packed with quality that should have more value as it saves time too,. This is my opinion.

How cool is that? I knew other countries spelled words differently, but I didn't know about this one. Love it when I learn something new. And here I just thought you were being clever.

Hi All, every time whenever i have the time to write in here, i make sure that i can write a few lines to explain my point. I try not to make my pointing hanging somewhere, until the discussion starter feel confused by it. I always trying my best to explain as much details as i can. I ever heard from some mylotters who told me that both quality and quantity are equal important when we are posting in here, to earn a good sum of cents...Correct me if any of my points is wrong. Hope you have a nice weekend...

"I ever heard from some mylotters who told me that both quality and quantity are equal important " You are not the only one but many have the view here that both quality and quantity matter. I was merely saying that since many have this impression if a mention is also made somewhere by myLot that 'to the point'quality posts would also get equal value. I have not said that it is a guideline violation to write long winded posts. If one can write small, effective quality posts that would save time. But I got brick bats here for suggesting this!

I would have to disagree that the more you type in a single post at myLot the more you are appreciated. It's not about quantity, it's about quality. I also think you misunderstand what myLot looks for from it's posters. A one line post is not a quality response. There is a big difference between what is being asked for from myLot participants and what your instructor was trying to teach you in your class. For example, most young school children learn that a paragraph is 3 to 5 sentences. This is not true in the sense that all paragraphs are not required to be the same length, but children need guidelines.

There are plenty of people who have said that they typed very long posts and did not see a significant difference in their earnings. But again, the point is that you are missing what your instructor was trying to teach.

There is a general feeling here, which I gathered from views expressed by many that more one types the more one earns. To the point posts need to be encouraged.

I can see both sides of this. It's definitely important that your response should be relevant to the discussion and also progress the discussion further. This can be done in one line, but where a topic is information-dense, then one line isn't always enough to impart anything of value. Value is the thing to concentrate on, rather than the length of the response or comment. For example, if I say 'I agree with what you said,' it's a conversation killer, because there's nothing there to generate a new comment. However, if I say, I agree with what you said, because my sister has also experienced this,' then I'm validating your point, and conveying the reason for that validation. Being me, I'd probably say a lot more, but my second comment has value, while my first comment does not.

The problem is, MyLot are so secretive about the payment algorithm that there is a lot of speculation about it - most of it incorrect. You don't need to write a lot to get paid well, but your point does have to be pertinent to the topic. A one or two line response can achieve that, but the sad fact is that many of the people who do respond with one-liners don't make quality posts. As you say, some users can make their point in a few words, and if the point is well made, then it will be read and commented on.

Apart from the earning part, about which we know nothing, to the point posts could save time and we could participate more. This is my view.

There is a general feeling here - although guidelines do talk about quality,- that more one writes the more one earns. I only made a suggestion that if myLot also added that even short posts packed with quality could get equal prominence then I am sure users who can, will attempt short posts.

Based on experience, people tend to rate one-liner negatively, no matter how good the content is. And because rating based on how community looks at you, I prefer to follow what community wants then. It's to protect my rating anyway

I agree with you to a great extent.Mylot expects us to be descriptive. So obviously it does not encourage precis writing. You are expected to be descriptive in both responses and comments. My experience is that the more descriptive you are the more you earn. But I don't think that Mylot does not value one liners. If you are paid here for what you type, then one liners also are paid.

Short posts with a punch in them should have more value than long winded ones for the simple reason that while they pack what needs to be packed, they save everyone's time too. Time is precious! What say?

allknowing stop and think mylot is open to all countries and not all people speak English so they may not have the precise writing, you misspelled precise, that you wish we had, I myself write as little or as mu ch as I feel is necessary to get my points across., with some of my closer friends here I might 'write more. mylot cannot give rules of correct writing here as a lot of people are struggling using English for their first times.so My lot admins asks us to give them some slack. I do not think my lot ignores intelligent one lines'but does not like one lines which do not convey a whole thought even, and why should they as they are the' ones paying out the money? And whats wrong with longer discussions or posts if they are also getting to the point'in short time? I do not think we need writing police here in'mylot as we all do the best we can.

All what I said here was that we should be encouraged to write to the point. And you surely know what I meant by saying one line And as for spelling you are not supposed to correct any one here but sadly you have corrected me wrongly. Have you never heard of the word 'precis'?

You know, I think that when it comes to responses there is really no need to be really wordy if you are the kind of person that doesn't like to be wordy. However, when I was learning to write my teachers always said that answers had to be a certain amount of pages long so I've become a wordy person. Now when it comes to a discussion that you've started, I don't think that it is possible to start a meaningful discussion with just one line because that definitely doesn't give content to give details and ask any questions that you might have.

I have come across views here that the more one writes the more one earns. I prefer short, to the point responses. I was merely making a suggestion that myLot could perhaps clarify this point.

Mylot is encouraging for all poor writing or precise writing. No matter you are write in high level English or low level English but point should be clear and other mylotters should understand. Mylot pay same attention for everyone writing single line comment or more line comment. No matter for mylot but quality is important for mylot.
