Bought a flatscreen monitor at a yard sale...

Yep...I was using a 15-inch box-type monitor. It worked so even though I wanted a flatscreen, it wasn't important enough to pay $100. I was at a yard sale and they had a 15-inch flatscreen monitor for $20 and I bought it. It worked great for one day. The next day it kept giving me a black screen. It would show the screen for maybe a minute, maybe 30 seconds. I didn't want to retrieve my old boxy monitor, and yard sale people don't give refunds, so off I went to Office Depot and bought a 20-inch flatscreen monitor for $100 plus tax plus disposal fee ($115 total). Hey! This monitor is terrific. The pictures are so much brighter and I can see the clock without getting real close and squinting. Originally I was concerned that a 20-inch monitor wouldn't fit in the monitor space on my desk, not realizing that the 20" is not height. In addition to spending big bucks on a new monitor, I called a mobile PC service to fix other problems, which cost another $85. Ah...the price we pay to stay connected!

I am glad you are able to bought this flat-screen monitor, it is really great to have it rather than having the old fashion style box type monitor. It did cost much, but hey look at the bright side, its more comfortable, less space, eyes-friendly.., etc.. look at the bright side.. We really have to invest on something in order for us to be more comfortable in life...

I think the money I spent was good! I'm happy with the monitor and the benefits you mentioned in your response. The only bummer is the $20 I spent on the yard sale lemon, but I'll look at it as a down payment on the wonderful world of a 20" flatscreen.

For the garage sale monitor worth $20, i think you can have it repair to a friend for a lower service cost..i know you'll find a way on what to do on it.

Well if you ever do, just keep in mind most new TVs can be used as a computer monitor too.

joyce: Costliest is the cheapest. cheap things do not work well. you have learnt it. good you spent for a new monitor. you will have warranty. For fixing a monitor -- may be you could have done it yourself. perhaps you were not sure. no problem. enjoy. you will earn in your offine job or online job.

I like your expression that costliest is cheapest. Ouch! The reality of it empties my wallet (credit card). My computer was so loaded down with junk I had to wait 3-5 minutes for my browser to load. I wouldn't have known what I could delete.

The expression I gave is not my own. It was told to me about thirty years ago by a colleague of mine, while working in a bank. that gentleman passed away ten years back. He was always keen on dressing properly and whenever he bought things he will buy top class things paying a higher amount. He was a fairly well to do man. In comparison I was trying to make both ends meet struggling. I did not appreciate it then. But over the years recently I have come to accept it after experiencing problems in purchase of battery for laptop --duplicate versus original. Original batteries last long.

My friend has a flat screen monitor for the PC and it's wonderful! I use a laptop so I didn't have to buy one, but I still have the old traditional box screen for my desctop PC which I don't use at all. I think that the price at the store was ok for a 20'' screen, I hope you'll enjoy your new monitor and have a great time watching movies on it :)

My son has a flat screen monitor and it is nice to work in that. true i have the same in my laptop but the screen is smaller. The other day I saw a big flat screen TV --50 inches TV in Costco. it was so nice.

Hi friend! Personally, I would not buy anything without a warranty especially on things that I do not understand much. I also buy from garage sale but not electronic device unless it has a warranty. About the size, yes the measure is diagonal and not the height.

Thank you! My NEW policy is to not buy electronics at a yard sale without a warranty.
