I'm seriously considering getting some chickens. Have any Mylotters got experience with raising them in their backyard? I do not want to buy eggs from battery hens, I think it is cruel. Free range eggs are much more expensive, so perhaps it is worth raising my own. What do you think?

My daughter in law has half a dozen and her mother sells the eggs, which I guess give her some pocket money. She told me that they are easy to look after.

Raising your own chicken is a good idea. My brother is doing that. Every morning he has organic eggs and need not buy at all. But make sure the chicken house is from from your house because it would smell of course,

Yes I will and I don't want any feathers in the air either as I have allergies in the summer.

With the price of corn I really don't know how inexpensive it will be to raise your own chickens to produce eggs. Realistically how many eggs do we consume to make it justifiable to raise our own? I would start with one or two and go from there. You can always sell what you don't consume.

We are only two poeple so we use about 8 - 10 eggs a week. I thought if I had more than I need I could sell some to help towards the dog food which costs us a fortune every month. I like the idea of hens supporting the dogs!

We live in the country and there are no restrictions here. Chickens are quite a common sight, and we have no neighbours close enough to be affected by any smells.

Hi comb! There are several things to consider when raising your own poultry. First of all you should have a place away from the neighborhood as they may be affected by the smell coming from the poultry. Unless you just want to raise a few. Secondly, you need to prepare the place for the chicken to stay. You should also have to provide the chickens the proper nutrients and laying mash (food in order to lay eggs) in order for those to lay more eggs.

We can get more and more meat and eggs. If possible we can raise indigenous chicken. Indigenous chickens bear less health hazards. Due to price hike paultry food, we are to buy 4 eggs by half dollar in my country. Yet we cant help purchasing in that price rate.
In the rural area in my country you'll see in every house raising chicken. I personally buy little chickens and raise them up for meat. Stay fine

It has helped for you so that is encouraging. My mother used to keep chickens but it was so long ago that I can barely remember anything except a china egg which she said would encourage the chickens to lay. There are lots of people here who also keep chickens and this is increasing now that food prices are rising.
