I do, I simply cant resist myself from cleaning up an old jam bottle or a pickle bottle, remove the labels that is stuck on them and store them for future use.It is the same with biscuit tins and other tins, which can be used for storing just about anything.I stuck several square biscuit tins together and made a kind of shelf for keeping hardware items like screwdrivers, spanner ,hammer which is easily available when there is need and one need not go hunting for it in the heavy tool box .I also like paper bags which I use for storing bills and other items and put them in the drawer.
How about you all? Please add about your own collections ..

Hi Kiran!
We also generally re-cycle used 'jam' or 'pickle' bottles as per our requirements. Some of the bottles are made up of plastic and some of glass. Glass bottles are to be handled carefully, so we prefer to 're-use' plastic bottles.
Your idea of using biscuit tins for storing hardware items also appear very practical and this way you do not have to look around for hammer etc.
Now a days Govt. is gradually banning plastic bags, therefore, some shopkeepers are selling their products in cloth bags here in Delhi. Those cloth bags also come handy for keeping small items. However, paper bags do not last long and there is always a danger of them getting torn.
Good post!
Have a nice day.

Hi deepak,Me on the other hand prefer to keep glass bottles since they are healthier than plastic and one cannot buy them as easily as plastic bottles.Yes tins come in handy, to use as a tool box,to keep all the threads ,needles and buttons , a sewing box and my daughter keeps her nail polishes inside them without the cover, easy to take out and store...
I too like the idea of cloth bags deepak, they are very useful, last long and also can be washed. We can make nice ones at home even from old materials ..

No doubt glass bottles are better than plastic stuff and could be cleaned and washed easily, yet one needs to be careful, while using them. A slight slip of hand could ruin the show.
Now a days people do not have time to stitch a cloth bag with old material, though it appears a good idea.

I agree deepak, The good old times and and the good old ways of doing things are vanishing forever.I remember that in my ancestral home we used to have 3 feet high jars used for storing pickles made during season. Now the jars have become show pieces lol...I agree ne has to handle glass jars and items very carefully

I recycle all that and use it for a lot of things. I make my own jams and give them as gifts for Christmas and birthdayds. I also make relishes and other yummy things. I don`t buy many things that come in bottles or tins, but I beg my family and friends to save theirs for me. They comply, specially as they know they will have nice things to eat later on. Besides that, I also collect Christmas and birthday wrapping paper. I use it to wrap my home made gifts.

I usually recycle these items, because I live in small space and anything I collect eventually just gets in the way.

Hi cutepenguin ,Yes that is good ! I too find that there are times when I have too many bottles and tins and I sort out and keep a few that I find interesting and some I give away to people who show interest in having some, the rest I give to the recycling centers - all the best

I recycle the plastic and glass bottles unless I find jars that have very good tops that are interesting to me. When the jar has an interesting design or shape I will save it and use it to store things. I don't get many tins so I don't collect them. I do keep the metal coffee cans too. We use those as deer deterants in the garden. I recycle everything I can and I have a compost pile for old newspapers and such.

Some of the biscuit and chocolate tins are very good for staring sewing items since they are wide and can hold a lot of stuff - all the best and have a great day

It comes out of practice. There are some people who store bottles, tins, pens, pencils etc. I am of the view we should retain essential items only so that dust doesn't get accumulate and insects do not spread inside the house. Of course if one can maintain them properly the it is fine.

Yes thats true ravi I too agree that there is point in hoarding stuff that one may never use for years and then to get rid of it when it is falling to pieces does not make sense.I have put most of the bottles into use. Some of the long green bottles are lovely and can be used as vases...

I collect jars and tins, but don't have a large collection of them. I also collect baskets, especially if they are unusually shaped. I collect all sorts of things that I can use for my craft making. I also collect old tables and chairs people throw out and restore them. I will collect anything I can find that has anything to do with Halloween. Tins can be reused, so can jars and some bottles. I also collect plastic grocery bags and reuse them. Me and my husband are big in recycling. You'd be surprised at what uses you could find for old tins and bottles.

Hi Sukeena, thanks a lot for sharing..I too like cane baskets , even the oes that come with flower arrangements ..It is nice to know that you like to restore old furniture, my daughter too loves dong that.I agree that if one has the imagination one can do wonders with old stuff that people normally throw away.I once found a metal stand lying in the gutter that had an interesting shape and a depression in the center which I brought home cleaned and painted it and now we use it as a pot holder for indoor plants and guests ask me where I got it from LOL...

We bought a new place last year and while we were cleaning up around it, I found an old bug zapper on top of the shed (or the top of it) the bottom was in the edge of the woods. My husband picked it up and saw me eyeing it(It made me think of a bird cage)and asked me if I thought there was something I could do with that. I said yes, so he set it aside. Later I took it and cleaned it up, painted it, put it together, turned it upside down and created a nativity scene in it for Christmas. Everyone loved it. I found a double basket, had never seen a basket quite like it, in the woods. It was a mess, my husband wanted to burn it, but I said no I can fix it. He laughed. I cleaned it up, put it back together, painted it and lined one of the baskets with Christmas felt and the other one I put a Christmas flower arrangement in, a bow, put a Rudolph ornament on one side a Santa on another. I pick up any kind of junk if I think I can fix it and make something usable out of. Like you did with the metal stand. It sounds like you are creative also. It's like the old saying "one person's trash is another ones treasure". I love it. I think I'm addicted. LOL

hi there kiran8,
i do love to collect those things that you have mentioned. but i am not collecting all of them for future use. as some of them are being collected because i am selling them again to the junk shop. in our place here, some junk shop buys things such as tin cans, plastic bottles and old jars. so i prefer to sell them rather than to keep them. and with the paper bags, i used them again to keep some stuffs.

Previously I'm collecting magazines every month but when I found out that those articles can be downloaded online, I stopped collecting those magazines already, for I have only limited space at home. I'm also into cutting out articles from my favorite columnist. I used to do this since I was a kid and until now I still find it enjoyable. I know, I 'll be able to get rid of this kind in the future but now, I'm enjoying it. Thanks

I dislike throwing away anything that might be useful later on, so although I have to recycle to keep things at an acceptable level I am a hoarder too. Glass jars with a screw top are always useful, I use mine mostly for jam making but they are good for storing small items in the fridge or cupboard. I use the plastic icecream containers for lots of things, they are a good size and make a useful dish for the cats'or dogs' special treats. They are also handy as drawer tidies.
Paper bags seem to be making a comeback in my supermarket and I store green tomatoes there so that they can turn red. Fruit and veg seem to keep fresh longer in paper bags than in the plastic ones which I get from the shops. I will store seeds in the paper bags in the autumn.

I also like collecting those cute baby jars and biscuit tins. I use baby jars to put in my loose change, paperclips, beads, sometimes I even put tea candles inside these. As for biscuit tins, I detach its label and use it as a sewing kit, or to put in some clippings, my supplies for cross stitching, just about anything. They look better when washed and dried and stacked together in a corner table rather than see all the bits and pieces of stuff strewn all over the table.

Hi Raine, Baby jars and even small facial cream containers are good for keeping pins and needles since they dont rust easily when kept inside glass containers.I too like collecting tins since you can do so many things with them..Some of them come with very attractive shapes .What you say is a good idea to keep them in a corner table ,looks attractive too...all the best and happy mylotting

well to tell the truth I have been collecting drink cans for a quite some time when I'm at elemetary school, I just like the pictures of those cans. I love to drink various things like milk coffee, milk tea, soda milk, aloe vera, orange juice, grape juice, strawberry juice, etc, all that packaged in cans. Like I mention, I like the pictures in those cans, and I only collect one from each types. However, one day my mother found those my collection and think that I'm collecting trash so she forced me to throw them out D=
And finally she sold those cans to junkman....Well at least it can make a little money but my collection is gone....hahaha. Now that I think back, I might being silly that time to even collecting stuff like that

Most definitely I collect many items either for a reuse kind of way or implementing it in a craft I'm going to make. I use old jars for many different sauces I make and also for storing crafts items. I save colorful or interesting designed paper bags to make cards with. I save old light bulbs to make into ornaments (I have a ton of them) and cardboard oatmeal, cornmeal canisters to later cover in scrapbook paper and reuse for a gift box or cookie gift.

I keep and reuse all sorts of things. I have reused jars to hold homemade goodies for Christmas gifts and also use them for jellies and jams that don't need to be pressure sealed. I reuse pickle jars to make refrigerator pickles.
I don't get many paper bags, but I use them to drain fried foods on. I use plastic bags for a lot of things, including trash can liners.
Now and then I will throw out a jar or a container of some kind, but most of the time I put them to good use.

One thing that I do keep hold of are plastic bags that we get from the supermarket. I think that far too many of these are wasted, and there is no need for this to be the case. I will take old bags with me when I do the shopping and this means that I don't have to waste as many. The only time I will throw one away is if it is the bag that I had used for raw meat, or if the bag was ripped. I probably throw two bags away each week when I might have thrown away 20 in the past, so I would say that I am getting much better at it.
I don't re use bottles or tins, but I do re cycle them with the local council, and I will put all of the things in the correct bins so that when the council come round it is easy for them to see where to put my rubbish. I think it is important that we all try to do our bit to save the planet if there is any way that we can do so.

Hello, yes we also like to collect bottles and empty containers. But these should be enough strong. I am running photo state shop. some papers are waste during my work. But I collect all them because I can use another side of paper. You know one 17 trees required to make 1 ton paper. We must be used wastage. In this we can contribute in enviorment saving.

Hi anil, I agree with what you say about paper.I too dont waste paper.Normally most calenders have one side blank and you can cut them in neat strips and pin them together to use for making a list or noting down something.Recycling should be taken seriously so that we cut down on wastage and pollution...

I store books, magazines of my interest. I do not retain bottles, tins of biscuits, jam etc. I throw them out. I do buy and retain screw drivers, starters that is required for day to day use.
