Sometimes I wonder if my cat really can understand me or not. Yesterday when I got into bed I looked down at him when he was on my side of the bed. I then asked him "okay get on over your own side", and you know what? He did move over to his own side! This really did make me wonder if he understands me or the English language in general! Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

hi schulzie! I do believe that animals are highly intelligent as well. And base on their reactions on our commands I believe they do understand us.

I don't know how, but our pets do understands us. I remember my dog few years back, whenever our family goes out, we tell her to stay on the same spot and guard the house. If someone gets near the house, bark until that person is away from the house. When we got home, she's still on the same spot guarding the house, wagging her tail and seems so happy that we are back :D

I do think that cats and dogs can understand us to a degree. I am thinking that they learn different commands or gestures and then they do it based on past experience.

Sounds like he can. I think that pets can understand the meaning of certain terms that they hear on regular basis. My little dog understands when I say..let the mama get up. Or do you want to go to bed with the mama? She understands outside and go go for a ride too..LOL. I think that although cats are more independent pets..they have just as much potential to understand as dogs do..they just choose more about when and what they understand.

I know what you mean about that. I ask my cat if he wants to go out to his litter box to go potty and he gets up and goes. Or if I call my cat by name and say "Come here" he does., etc. Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!

I think our pets understand far more than we give them credit for.

I think animals are pretty smart when they're taught. I talked to my 'gang' all the time and it seems that they pick up on the cues on different things over time. What I mean by gang, well, since my mom passed away just a few weeks ago, I've taken in her 5 cats and 2 dogs, I now have 17 cats and 6 dogs. I have a freaking ZOO! So to answer your question, does your cat understand you? Yes they do but not all the time, just what they've learned by the way of spoken language or your body language

Wow! That's a lot of pets to take care of! And I do believe that animals learn certain words or commands and then know what we expect of them when we say it. My cat is 11 years old so I'm sure he has learned a few commands by now. Thanks for your comment and have a great day!!!

When you live with a pet dog or cat for a long time, they become accustomed to your tone of voice and your body language. Also your daily habits become familiar to them. They don't need to understand the language. They're reading body language, tone of voice and context.

Of course, he understands you. I know that my cats understand what I am saying at least as well as a young human child would. I also know that one of my late dogs knew "left" and "right"; she routinely demonstrated this knowledge.
