Hi, do you have the same situation like me? Facebook and youtube have been blocked in our office....we really cannot access the site anymore. It is one of the new rules and policies that our Network Administration is implementing in order to stop employees from accessing the social network site and just be focusing their selves towards their jobs.
What do you think? Please share...

That's a great thing to do!
I like your network admin!
It encourages the employees to focus on their tasks at hand and prevent them from doing unethical things like stealing time from work for play and useless entertainment. And Youtube and Facebooking during working period is unethical. Even before becoming employees--there's always a subject in college that teaches students common "Ethics" of employees. It's already a written rule that stealing time from work is considered unethical. Thus, if you're looking for a negative feedback from me regarding this issue, well, I am happy to say that I greatly disappoint you buddy. lolz.

If schools implements this rule of forbidding any users within its premise to reach sites like these, how much more the workplaces especially the offices? And schools are not jobs to boot.

I agree, those two sites had been nothing more than distracting.they simply can't afford to work and finish their task. facebook and youtube should be use when you are no longer busy, and as a stress reliever from your problems. those sites are extremely distracting and should be a place for it and not at the time of work

Yes I too think that it is a good decision from admin. Otherwise people may be spending their office time in chatting friends on facebook and watching videos in youtube .

When you go online to social network sites, game sites or any site other than what is work related, you are effectively stealing from your employer. You're stealing time. You are contracted to be using your time in your work for your employer not playing around in FB and YouTube. I think you've got a smart Network Administrator.

i agree..
we comes to the office for working
not for playing FB or open youtube maybe
it`s no connection with my occupation
for a few occupation, they still need internet connection
but it doesn`t mean they can open any website that they like it..it`s office and not their home

Hi,
I'm not currently working so i don't face this situation.
however, I have worked before and i understand that many companies are blocking entartainment sites as they want employees to work instead of playing games.
I personally think that a certain amount of FB is good for the employees is good cause they need to rest and it allows employees to take a short break away from work. It would increase their productivity as compared to spending one long 5 hours working.
However, on the other hand, i also feel for companies because they paid salary to employees so they can work for the company. Yet, many of them are abusing companies assets to do work-unrelated stuff.
In this case, the company has no choice because they see their productivity rate falling that they have decided to block entertainment sites like FB and youtube to ensure employees will spend all their time working.

Hi aabuda! even in our main office, facebook is blocked from 8 am to 4pm. The employees can only open after 4pm. Our department also understand the need for socialization. We should also understand that we should not be opening those sites during office hours because those time should be devoted mainly for office works. However, some employees abuse the opportunity being given by the company and they spend the whole day playing facebook games. I work in the field and yes, when I visited the main office for sometime, I've seen the computers turned on facebook particularly farmville. Oh, their garden are so beautiful I thought. They are competing to reach the higher level.
How about myLot? I'm sure your company is not able to find out about it yet. Don't invite your boss to be safe, he he.
Have a nice day!

One probable reason is that the quality of work has been affected by those site, remember, the bandwidth consumed when you're watching videos on youtube slows down the whole network. Who are we to complain, right? We just have to live with it. Good thing, though, we can still access those sites in our workplace.

i believe it is depends on the rule from every company or office..
Maybe in your company, there are ineffective or reduced passion because too much play in youtube and social network
as the worker, you should obey the rule of your office..
you can play your facebook if you are going at home..
it`s simple

It is better to blocked so employees will focus on their jobs especially to those people who abuse this kind of priveledge.
In the office it is not blocked so far but I do have a colleague who really abused it. There are times thag he soend more time in Facebook than in his work. Sometimes if some works are needed he would always says that it is not done. How will it be done, his time was occupied by facebook. I do hope we do realize it.

they have implemented it because a lot of employees in the office often don't focus on their job anymore, few jobs gets done because most employees have been surfing the internet and especially being in social networking site like facebook, some just play games and others are addicted on viewing videos and hearing songs on youtube. it can be distracting so they must implement it so that when employees are at the office, they can focus on the main purpose to be there which is their job and to work. maybe they can log in to facebook when they get home or not at work.

Ya, I have also heard some thing like this from one of family member. He told me that he can't access to facebook and other social networking sites in his new working place. But he was able to use gmail and others.

It sounds like a good idea. If you were a boss, would you want one of your employees chatting away on Facebook with his friends when he should be working?

In my latest work, the same has been blocked as well, but I have total access to all internet websites. Of course with this privilege comes responsibilities. I never ever accessed my Facebook or any other social networking sites, or even non-work related sites during work; not even during break. Reason being is, I don't want anybody who doesn't have an access get to see it as if I'm rubbing it in their face, and I want to be a good example. Also, there were some people who approached me and asked me if they can use my laptop so they can check their Facebooks and what not. Of course I didn't let anyone, if I did, I have to allow anybody else who would ask me to.

Yeah, in my office facebook, youtube, and even blogspot has been blocked too. I think it's for efficiency, to increase the productiviity of the employee of course. Although there are several cloack websites to access the blocked sites but I think it's not good to sneak like that. Because rather than doing the work given by company, there are employees who accessing and replying at facebook instead. so that's their way to make the productivity secured at least, The company pay you for doing the job and not accessing social network anyway. So we can't really blame them.

I worked for a police department for many years and we too were blocked from many sites on the internet. ex: facebook, twitter, personal email accounts, game sites, etc. I always thought that it was so ridiculous that we were unable to go to these sites at any time during our day. I would occasionally like to check my personal email or check my facebook page during my lunch break and it seemed to me like a few people who were spending their entire day on those sites ruined it for everyone else who used those personal sites in moderation. While I think it's a huge infringement on personal use of a computer that is supposedly "mine" I can also see where the company is coming from. Most people can get sucked in to reading facebook posts and checking emails and lose track of time quite easily. If they're clocked in and collecting payment from a company it stands to reason that they should be doing work to earn that money. I do think it would be an interesting proposal to implement something that would allow company employees to use those sites when they are on breaks or during their lunch hours.
