I think those people who are most likely to succeed in life, are willing to take risks to achieve their dreams or what they have envisioned their life will be in the future. This is true with most businessmen I guess. It is a fact that in everything we do, the first move or action we make is the hardest part because of uncertainty, most especially if one is planning a business venture.
We may say that not all of those who tried have succeeded, but there are also many who have progressed in their chosen business. And most of them took the risks even they are not certain what will be the outcome.
How about you guys, are you willing to take the risks to succeed?

I'm not a natural risk taker, but I have realised in recent years that you can't progress without taking some risks. The key is to manage the risk. In his book "Screw It, Let's Do It", Richard Branson makes a distinction between calculated risks and gambling. A calculated risk is when you've worked out as far as possible what the risks and possible benefits are, and you make sure as much as possible that the odds are in your favour. Even then, it's not wise to bet the farm - in the business that I'm building up at the moment, I have a policy of not risking more than I can afford to lose.

Sorry, when I said "bet the farm", I didn't literally mean a farm. I'm not a farmer, I'm a trader (mostly on eBay). "Betting the farm" is a figure of speech, it means risking everything you've got. My mistake, I shouldn't have used slang on an international forum.

Yes, your right I did take that literally. Sorry too, and since you've said that you are a trader, it would mean that you are a risks taker. But only to some extent and most especially if the outcome will be in your favor.

Hi Stuart,
I guess most of us are, especially if we always thought that we can not achieve our goals even if we try everything we've got.
As you have said, before taking any risks, think of the benefits in case we take the risks and make all things possible so that the result will be favorable for us.
Yeah, your right, it's not advisable to risks more than you can afford to lose, because if in case it fails there's no more chance for you to recover. We all knew that a farm business needs a bigger capital and in case it don't turn out the way you want it to be your lose will be greater. I just hope you could think of other ventures that would require less money.

I think this is so. When I was young, I was a risk-taker in some sense, in so far as I was unconventional, outgoing, flamboyant, attention-seeking, friendly, fun, talkative, a born entertainer. I was a natural and highly talented performer, very much at ease in front of audiences, and widely liked. And yet strangely enough, if I felt criticised, or threatened, I'd become spooked and lose confidence: I was not naturally brave or aggressive. Perhaps this is when risk-taking is most important: does a person have the "front" to take risks when outside of their comfort zone? I think this is where I fell down: I was too easily intimidated. So, it could be said I wasn't willing, or able, to take the risks to succeed. That said, I feel I could have succeeded anyway, because I think shy and/or sensitive people can become successful, but they have to work very hard at it. I didn't put in the work, or enough work; maybe I didn't want it enough, success I mean. I regret that now. I have to live with it.

Yes, I was very extrovert when young; yes I guess you're right, I was lucky to have these traits. As to the weaknesses, they are hard for me to accept, because I feel I should have done more to conquer them. Thanks for your encouraging words...:)

You are really gifted my friend and I admired your talents. How I wish I could have a bit of those especially in front of an audience, because I'm afraid to make mistakes and a bit shy too.
Anyway, since you're already used to performing, I think you can easily hide your insecurities by focusing more on your abilities, just like what actors are doing if you know what I mean.

It means that you have an extrovert kind of character while you were young. An outgoing, friendly and talkative person especially when you're around people and as you also said a widely liked entertainer. Only few people are blessed with that kind traits I guess. But when you feel you are criticized or threatened you lose confidence. I guess since you are an entertainer I think you can manage to counter that feeling of yours by thinking about have you have achieved in life..
We all have our own weaknesses and I think some people have a way of hiding them.

I learned this from Risk Management seminar - "The greatest risk is not to take risks at all." It's not only in business but in our personal lives that we need to take risks, too. Life without taking risks is simply too boring. True, failure may happen, but so too is success. We can't just sit around and wait for things to happen. We have to take risks! So, there is another quote, "To get to other lands, we have to leave the shore."

This is true, I guess we all have to take risks one way or the other in order for us to enjoy life. The more risks we took the greater will be the reward. So we have to decide or we may not learn to move on. The good thing is, we may not know if we can, if we have not taken the risk.

Yes, your right. Those who are not afraid to gamble have the most probability to be rewarded. And the more you invest especially in business, the more will be the return. So, one must have the courage to take the risk in order to succeed.

There is this principle in investing - high risk, high yield. It means that when we risk more, the rewards to be expected is more. So, of it's low risk, low yield and so, definitely no risk, no yield.

Life is a continuous struggle, so those who aren't afraid to fail usually succeeds. Let me know if you have beaten the odds for taking the risk, anyway I know you would.

I'm not really a risk taker especially during my younger years but now in my 40's I guess I have to take more risk, one phrase that I can't forget about risk is this The greater risk, the greater the rewards. And I think this is true in life, playing safe will get you nowhere. Have a nice day :)

Yes, the greater the risks would be rewarded accordingly. It's true with businessmen, they invest more to earn more. Most of them, before venturing in anything especially if it involves greater risks some calculations are being done just in case or options are being laid to lessen the effects if in case the turnout is not what is expected. Playing safe is also good but not at all times.

I'd rather consider the word risk as challenge rather take it as risk itself. The notion of risks is by far taken with great negativity in life. Hence I always make it a point to change my outlook of risk as a challenge for me. People love challenges and hates risks. So having the mindset of challenge instead of risks help me take them head on. And yes, risks or challenges are important to improve and develop oneself. Anybody who never taken any risk or challenge really hasn't lived at all. Also, hesitation, fear and uncertainty are the greatest pundits why people are risk averse. Always, remember, when you hesitate, the world will hesitate on you. When you fear something, you are limiting your options and thinking. And when you look into uncertainty, you will be a worry freak.

Yes, we must have the right attitude in dealing with risks by treating it as a challenge to our capability. And by doing so with determination our chances of winning will be greater.Hesitation will move us nowhere because we are what we think we are. So, we must possess the courage to face anything that hinder us to be progressive.

life on a daily basis is a big risk.or adventure depending on how we approach it.walking into the bathroom ,we risk slipping on the wet floor.driving out into the traffic, well we all know what the risk are there.we can play as safe as we want but it is the unknown that to me gives living a bit more of an edge. we can plan all we want, but it doesnt mean we can be total control, that will be so boring or mundane.variables or the unforeseen are always present, having said that,i think the best approach may be to plan a certain path,be it life or business venture but be sure to have contingencies ,in case it goes this way or that. at least there is a challenge and a sense of being ready for come what may. Calculated risk.! why do so many people do extreme sports, skyjumping , base jumping, high speed racing etc.Dangerous are these activities but it is again calculated risks. The dangers are taken into account so is the reward, the sense of "I want to not merely be alive but feel alive". Businessmen who have this approach either do very well or lose it all.but will not be afraid to start all over again.Just a challenge.Playing it safe has benefits but being too overly cautious about everything. well, they "risk" not to have lived at all.

So the moment one wakes up he/she is already confronted by risks, and it will be up to us on how we will manage them. As you have said all our actions are uncertain of the results, so we must be prepared at all times. And everything we do, must be given a deep thought before putting it into action. Since we all base our work on probability, we must work hard and use all our capabilities so that the result will favor us.

we live, grow up then grow old or not. in between all this is the way we have lived.
to most it is about being happy and satisfied and not worry. then to many others it is about making as much as possible when they are alive.life to me is one big gamble. we never know what comes tomorrow so taking risks is to me actually what makes life interesting, when the risks pay off,it is so gratifying.when it fails, well,we move on.as long as we can breathe,we can try another time,as long as the risks we take doesnt do harm to others or damage ourselves, physically or psychologically,no reason why we cannot. of course it has to be within reason.i think life is so boring if we live in a very predictable and mundane life.everything so planned and coordinated.
And then we die living like this..HUH..? What was the point of living as a human if we were not able to feel all the god given emotions only us humans can experience?

Life is a continuous struggle, so it is us who will make the decisions, if we want to achieve something in our lifetime. In order to accomplish our goal most of the time we have to make sacrifices and take some risks to attain such dreams.
Many have failed because they are not prepared when they took the risks. Careful planning, patience and determination is the key to success.
Doing nothing would take us nowhere, but before taking any action, we must be prepared for anything.

Yeah, your right lady. Taking the risk without being prepared is really scary, so before taking any, you must have other options just in case you failed the first test you have tried. What I mean is, take only the risk that you can manage to lose. It's like gambling, don't bet all your money in one betting. You should set aside some for other bets.
I admire your principle lady, you want to graduate first and have a degree before taking any risks.

Yes I'm willing to take risk to succeed but like in my case I failed in the business I went into years back, I would like to venture to another new business again but then people around me are not supportive. I know I failed once but this time I will do my best to make it a success but the people around me doesn't have that open mind. I think those risk taker who succeeded had supportive people around that lifts them up and encourages them instead of putting them down.

Doing nothing will definitely go us nowhere, so we have to take some risks one way or the other if we want to succeed in life. Yes, some people lost hope or became weak in pursuing their dreams because he/she lost the supports needed from people close to him/her.
Sometimes we have to do it our self and if we are really determined to accomplish something. So even without the support of our friends, we have to do some calculations before taking any risks. Focus, determination and passion is the key to success.

Hi stanley,
you are just so right. most of those entrpreneurs are willing to take risks to achieve their dream. Perhaps many of us have the same idea that they have, but we are afriad cause we are afraid fo losing money in the even the start-up fail.
therefore when you said that most businesmen are willing to take risk, i totally agree wtih you. There are some thigns in life that we jsut have to take a risk.
Otherwise, everybody would be successful. Only those with enough guts will be successful!

I am not a risk taker, I don't dwell into something I don't really understand. When a challenge is presented I try my best to arm myself with education. It's not that I am scared of risk. Jumping into a risk without understanding the situation is just like a fool jumping into a fire hoping it will extinguish itself. It is not all about taking risk, it's about assessing the risk that makes the difference between a winner and a loser.
Cheers!

Absolutely my friend, before venturing on anything one must be completely aware of what the consequences might be, in case it don't turned out the way, what he/she had expected it to be.
One must also have the patience, determination and perseverance if he/she decided to take the risks. Failures should not be an excuse for quitting but use the experienced so as not to dwell on the same path again.
Also treat the risks as an opportunity for advancement.

Hello stanley,
for one to move further in life..they need to move away from their comfort zone or current position..
and about the risk taking..
most successful people will go through a lot before they reach their state right now..a lot of effort and time they gave to achieve the impossible..
that is why the saying never give up existed..
when there is risk..the only option is to success or fall..
one who strive for success are willing to take risk to get to the target..
one who doesn't, will stay the same with no improvement.
the example in real life is in investing..
the investment with more risk will give you more gain, right..
enough said..
Thank you..:)

Yeah, if you want to achieve your dreams in life, one have to passed on some challenges. It depends on how one deals with these challenges, but being prepared on what will be the outcome of the risk could be an advantage. The more one is prepared and determined, I guess the chances of winning is imminent. And because of the uncertainty of the results only give in to what you can afford to lose.
And as you have said, more risks could mean more rewards. So being idle will go us nowhere.

Congrats my friend, to your online shop. Yeah, it's really hard when you want to do something in which you are not certain what will be the outcome. And this is where the risks comes in but if you are really determined and have the patience, there's a probability of success. Of course before taking the risks you should assessed first the possibilities, if it's worth the try and the benefits in case we passed the trials.
