Mr. Robert Merchand , one hundred year old french national has created a record in covering 100 km by cycle. He is celebrating his 101st birth day in November 2012. He set the record at 4:17:27 (4 hours 17 min and 27 sec).
Mr. Robert has lived in Canada and Venezuela and has worked as a gardener, salesman. He has said he has never smoked nor drank liquor and in women he has not indulged much.
At the end of the race he said he completed a little better than he has hoped.
I am giving the link for this news item:
http://velonews.competitor.com/2012/09/news/robert-marchand-sets-new-100-kilometer-speed-record_240211
I heard this news initially in Sun TV - Tamil News and later on searched and got this link from mylot search.
Yesterday I was happy in telling a new member of mylot is 92 years old from USA. Here is another person ---100 year old creating records.
This only confirms age is not a factor that can affect a person's performance but his own health condition is relevant.

I think you must be much younger --say 30+. fine. Even at 60+ some day when I get up after sleeping for 7 hours also I feel tired. I think it is due cold wealther here in Toronto because i am used to hot weather in chennai. No excuse. I felt bad after reading this report and thought I must be busy.
Yes. I saw a movie- Thandavm - acted by Vikram. good movie.

Wow! That is very good to hear, ravi. I also went on Yahoo! and saw pictures of him practicing for the race. He looks so good for his age. His face looks very good. That is a great accomplishment. At first when I read that he said he was "going to set the world record for the over-100 year age group over 100km" I wondered how many there were of his age competing! Then I read farther down in the article that the age group was created for him! How wonderful that he is so healthy and such an inspiration to anyone who wants to achieve a goal. Actually he is an inspiration to everyone. Thank you for another wonderful bit of news! I am amazed at this man and what he has accomplished. It would be nice to have a conversation with him. I'm sure he's led an interesting life.

thanks. I think there may be a few people in China and Japan over 100 who are active as this gentleman.
As I told already in mylot there is one member 92 year old. It is an inspiration for others that they should be active and do good things till even 100 years. If one lives upto 100 he will draw pension for number of years more than he served in an organisation also.
In India we have a system where a person is above 80 years extra pension is given.

Regular exercise keeps our body trim and fit and healthy. Not only cycling but also swimming, walking and jogging will do the same as that of cycling.

A nice and a cool story indeed. This might turn history. I am not sure how often he gone to hospital for his health. Hope he might not have gone there much. If he is riding at this age, he would have go more for another 20 - 25 years I guess. He has come good qualities. I envy really. He is a man who have existed in days where no phone and also existing in this iPhone 5 era. I am glad to see such news. This makes me more energetic and gives encouragement.
Have a great weekend.

Hello ravi,
Thanks a lot for your wish. But I don't want to live 100 years but if I am healthy and wealthy I'll really long for that life. I am an IT guy from chennai India BTW.

This is a cool story. I'd love to be still riding at 100 years old. I probably won't be doing anything at that age though. I have ancestors that lived past 100 but I don't take much after them. This little guy is built like a racer too. Five feet tall 112 pounds. I'm almost twice as big as he is. Only thing I wish is that discussion was put under cycling. I feel like I'm the only one starting discussions over there. There have got to be a lot more cyclist on myLot than I talk to over there.

You are 50 years old and you say you are fat. do not worry. try to reduce weight by doing walking exercises. Are you doing treadmill. Here my people have bought it and are not at all using it.
That French national has done at 100 years and it is to be appreciated. I wish you ride till your 100 years. Much depends on genes, our food habits and life style. good day.

I never said I was fat. I'm right within my ideal weight. The 100 year old cyclist is five feet tall and 112 pounds. I'm six feet five inches and 210 pounds. Half his age and twice his size. I'm in excellent physical condition because I do cycle and walk extensively. I just have respiratory problems I can do nothing about and won't likely live to see a 100 years old. I'm not complaining I plan to enjoy the next thirty-five to forty-five years as much as possible.

thanks for your reply. Yes. I also had asthma problem severely earlier and now it has subsided. Probably change of location may help. Or avoiding exposure to dust, smell etd may help.
Enjoy and live happily. Now you must live for your kids.

Hi Ravi, good to hear about this achievement. Nice to know that some persons achieve a lot in their old age, it clearly shows that age is not a barrier to achieve our goals in our life. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart

Vidhyaprakash:
this is really an achievement in the light of life expectation in India. Yes. Just now I checked through mylot search - life expectancy in India is 65 years. This is true. When I was young, I saw people in 50/55 years dying due to various illness. Now of course medical facilities have improved and slightly there is improvement in life expectancy in India as in other countries.
Many people cannot ride cycle in 70 and 80 years age. Yes. nothing is impossible.
How is your datacad? Is it convenient? good day

hi ravisivan wow thats really some record and he does n ot really look 100 yrs old either.evidently he has maintained almost
prefect health.wish I could say that about my self.it goes to
show that healthy old agers can do almost anything they set
their mind to.not smoking and drinking and carusing around must really h ave led to his greatness at his age. I am really impressed.
And here I am tied to a walker with diverticulitis and a hernia but I am not complaining as I found out that three ibuprofen tablets could stop the pain of a diverticulitis gastric attack. I tried that as at three this afternoon I was in such pain and a half hour later took the ibuprofin and in forty minutes the pain stopped and I feel human again.my problems all started when unwittingly in my forties and fities I gained a lot of weight which caused me to get type 2 diabetes, I only wish I had known then that fat works to defeat insulin onits way to push sugar into our cells where it is needed and thus the sugar remains in our blood where it does not belong.also I think my weight has led up to the umbilical hernia I now have. too soon old and too late
smart as the germanman once said.

I would like to be able to think that I will be able to be in that good of shape when I am at this gentleman's age. However, I don't know if that will be the case because we've never had anyone in our family that has actually lived through an entire century.
Now, there is a woman that my father used to work with when he was alive that is a runner. She is in her late 80s now and she regularly finishes first in the 55 and older age division in the 5K and 10K races that are held around here.

It was probably a woman saying, "On yer bike!" that set him on his cycle quest in the first place.
Personally I don't see what he achieved by going round and round a track to set the record, other than setting the record. It certainly isn't on my bucket list, but each to their own I suppose.

We are meeting for the first time in mylot. I could not know about your age, gender etc from the profile.
From what you have stated I think you must also be nearing 80+ and a male. Your avatar is good--doing exercises upside and down always.
Personally I consider this a great feat especially because at 63 years also I am not able to be brisk as I want. Much depends on genes, living practices.

such people are very inspiring to others, many who are 60 years feel that, they have lived much , and its enough, i hate that feeling, this man is sure going to inspire many of them.

prashu:
you have told very much what was there in my mind. At 60 itself I find it difficult to be healthy. Living with active life in 100 it is a thing to be appreciated.
In the previous years at least people were doing more physical work--in the field, in the factory and all that and that helped them lead a healthy life.
Nowadays most of time before TV or computer with junk food. very bad.
How is your friend whose brother got married and she was having some problems with her brother's wife? good day

This is an amazing story! Imagine a 101 year old is still able to ride a bike and on top of that ride a 100km bike for more than four hours. Awesome! I wish that when I become old I'd still be healthy and able to ride my bike. Actually, I am a biker myself and biking is my favorite form of exercise. I usually ride a few times a week but I've never really tried a 100km ride. I am currently 30 years old and I couldn't even myself finishing a 100km bike ride. I do plan to do it one day but as of now, I am currently not at that level.
Anyway, I agree with you that age is not a factor in order to achieve great things. Well, we have to admit, it will be a lot harder to achieve good health when we will be old but it is also not impossible. If this old man can do it, I'm sure others out there who are 60 and above can still do it. This story is actually a story of determination. The lesson there is to always take care of our body and never let our age be a hindrance to achieve amazing things.

welcome to mylot. Good. you are more positive and hopeful. You are from Philipines. If you also adopt --no smoking, no drinking -- then you can also do it like him.
You do ride bi-cycle nowadays, that is good. I have not been riding bi-cycle for quite a few years. However i drive scooter in chennai.
You have nicely stated the lessons we can learn by reading such information.
