Do you believe in SECOND CHANCE?

October 2, 2012 7:44am CST
We all know the story of Sodom and Gomorrah in the book of Genesis Chapter 19. How God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because of their grievous sins (Gen. 18:20). As a consequence, suffering the vengeance (punishment) of eternal fire (Jude v-7). Now we read in the book of Matthew, "Assuredly, I say to you, , it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city" (Mat.10:15). And again in Mat. 11:24, "But I say to you, that it shall be tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for you". What could this possibly mean, A Second Chance???

It is not close to our knowledge that more people are doing these actions, even if they know that God do not like any obscene actions, yet it was done by so many people from all walks of life. You can see it in the news,in some books,in some homes, some places from every corner of the globe.Sodom and Gomorrah was still in their ways. This message just reminds us all that God could still punish us with the same intensity as what had happen in Sodom and Gomorrah thousands of years ago,yet God also permits us to just not doing it against His well for He is always ready with a loving hand to forgive all sinners, yet just believe in His Being the Only God.

Hello berting600, greetings. I really appreciate your comment. and I agree with you. If there is one word that I disagree with it is the word "reminds". You can refer back to my counter comment with that of Rollo 1.

It is my pleasure hearing you back once again.I must admit this is not my forte, yet I admire your recognizing my efforts to visit your topic.I have commented what I thought might be the correct deciphering of the script and verse from the bible. It really takes two heads to solve a problem, the other one is just acceptable, yet the other one was the worthy solution.

Hello again my friend, the pleasure is also mine. Yes, you are right again. It takes two heads to easily solve any problem, how much more if there are three. Allow me to quote a biblical verse for it, "And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken", (Ecc. 4:12).

Hi, Tony - This is very interesting. As we know, God is fair to His children and He knows us through and through. He knows our hearts and loves every one and wants us to love Him back and He wants also sinners to repent and live forever. If we look at the verses before verse 24, we can see in what connection Jesus said these words. "20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[e] For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”" So what can we understand from this? As God knows that people in Thyre and Sidon and Sodom would have repented if they had got a full chance, it would be only fair that he would wake them up again and give them another chance.. It will be more difficult for those who saw all the miracles of Jesus and still hardened their hearts, to humbly repent and admit that Jesus is the one who will rule over the erth. This is only one of the wonderful things that will happen when Jesus is King over the earth during the thousand years. What do you think..??

Hello buenavida, greetings. You have such a very interesting comment. I can feel the joys and high hopes you have in your heart. Keep it flowing and growing. And allow me to quote one beautiful bible verse for you, "For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, which you have shown toward His name... (Hebrew 6:10).

No, it is just a comparison between the evil in Sodom and Gomorrah and the level of evil we will see in the last days. Basically, it is saying that as bad as Sodom and Gomorrah were, the world will be so much worse. And it is, let's face it.

"Assuredly, I say to you, , it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city" A comparison is indicated by the words "more" and "than".

Hello Rollo 1 greetings. First I would like to say, your comment is very much appreciated. And in agreement with you, that very likely, the sins of these present evil world are greater than the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah. However, to say that Jesus' words in the above mentioned verses are just "comparison" is totally missing the mark. Be as it may, the word "comparison" was not there. What can be clearly seen (for those who have eyes to see) are the words, "tolerable" as well as "day of judgment". Of course, Jesus is referring to those close minded, stubborn, hypocrites, and false accusers and most of all, CUSTODIAN OF THE ORACLES OF GOD, Scribes and Pharisees, who despite everything that Jesus had said and done in their very midst, would not want to believe Him as the promised Christ or Messiah. As compared to those cities of Tyre and Sidon, Sodom and Gomorrah, who have not even heard the gospel or that Jesus preached to them.

God gives everybody a second chance, he gives many chances after that as well. Your life apart from God is empty and there are plenty of things in this world to fill it up temporarily, the devil knows that and he uses everything he can to draw you away from God. But you know, when you do come back to God he erases all those sins and guides you on the right path again.

I think that having a second chance would depend very much on what the person had done wrong in the first place. For example if they had murdered someone there is no way that I would be associating myself with them again, but if they had let me down by cancelling plans for no reason then this is one of the cases where I might just choose to give them another chance and see them again. But you have to be careful when giving out chances because you don't want to be the one who gets hurt because of it all.

Hello gemmaR, greetings. You are saying that if ever there is a Second Chance, it will be given to those whose sins are most likely LESS than the grievous sins of Sodom and Gomorrah or to a murderer as your example. To this may I quote the ff; l. Sin is the transgression/violation/breaking of the laws of God (I John 3:4). 2. For whoever will break even just one of these laws, he is guilty of all (Jam.2:10) 3. God is no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34). I appreciate your comment my friend, and I will leave you with the very comforting yet sobering words of the prophet Isaiah 1:18. God Bless.

Okay i I think it is the second chance. I have not read all that but since you have quoted it, i can at least think about it. The thing is bible has been altered many times and it is become quite confusing. I would just not follow many thing in there. i am okay with the faith that i have. .Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead

The thing is that the bible has not been altered many times. The Jewish people held the Old Testament in such awe that they dared not change it and so many pieces of old parchment have been found that verify this. What have you discovered that was changed? The New Testament was written within living memory of people who had met with Jesus, the 4 gospels and the letters of Paul were circulated to people who remembered. Again so many old manuscripts have been found in recent history that no-one says that the text have been altered. I agree with you that people are given a second chance, more than that. Jesus said we should forgive people seventy times seven, in other words we should always give people another chance. People who criticise the Bible have rarely read it and if this is the case with you I can only recommend that you read it for yourself. Don't take other people's word for it. No one need be confused by the Bible it is the best read, most loved book in the world.

Hello riyauro, greetings. Let it be known that Second Chance is a phrase nowhere to find in the Bible. I am presenting religious discussions for two reasons, 1. To test my faith and beliefs on how sure and stable they are as far as the consistency and harmony of the Bible (as a whole) is concerned. 2. To learn from the comments of other mylotters, for issues/doctrines that are not yet clear to me. As for your comment that the Bible has been altered many times, let Psalms 12:6-7, speaks for itself, "The words of the LORD are pure words, as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. v-7, "YOU SHALL KEEP THEM, O LORD, YOU SHALL PRESERVE THEM FROM THIS GENERATION FOR EVER".

Some single verses really teach, inspire, and get us to think. Many others need to look into the context of a chapter or sub heading. This verse is part of Jesus' travel to places and his preaching to those people in a community. If I try to summarize what I read, Jesus brought up Sodom and Gomorrah as an example of cities that were destroyed for their wickedness. Jesus were preaching to people in Bethsaida, Korazin, and Capernaum. Comparing to both cities/towns, these cities were visited by Jesus. He warned them if they do not repent and accept Jesus/God, they might as well end up like both cities that were destroyed. This also applies to any places that have churches.

No, it's not a Second Chance you want; it's total erasing of the First Chance (forgetting it ever happened). That's why salvation is by TOTAL IMMERSION (baptism)---it drowns out all past-existence and gives you a new start.

I don't really believe in second chances. People seldom change, so why give them a second chance. In Sodom and Gomorrah's story, God gave those people many chances to redeem themselves before He destroyed the cities. I guess that no matter how many chances you would give to others, they will still remain the same, and make the same mistakes over and over again.
