Finding what you love to do

I was always told, if you do something you love to do...you will always succeed. I just have to wonder. How long does it take to succeed...When I lost my job to NAFTA..I went back to school for graphic design..During that time I was told how this would be a great paying job and doing it cause I love it would bring me much joy...well..I have to say...after working at this for nearly 10 years and still not make more then $8.00 an hour I am really feeling like a fool...and starting to reconsider my choice...I guess some are meant for success and I just wasn't that fortunate..and now I find myself to old to start all over..just wish I knew what life has in-store for me? If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them

I worked in a factory making good money...but when Clinton sign the NAFTA agreement my employer closed down and moved to Mexico..that was when I went back to school for graphic design..and I have never been able to make the kind of money I made when I worked in a factory...I live in a small town and have to drive over 30 mile one way to work now..and as far as other factory's ... they have all close down and left the country..our area lost 7 factory in a 60 mile area to NAFTA...

It is now satisfactory that you have started working in a factory where you are making good money.

Well, I have to say that I think that if you have something that you love to do, the money really shouldn't be something that is really an issue. The reason that I feel this way is that I don't think that happiness can be bought and if you are only working because you want to make large sums of money, I really don't think that happiness will come in your life. You know, the job that I enjoyed the most in my life was one of the lowest paying jobs and yet that was the happiest time of my life because of the fact that I wasn't stressed at work and didn't always have someone breathing down my back.

Yeah...Im not stressed at work...but I stress really bad as the bills keep piling up and the money isn't there to keep up with them and the rising cost of living...and wondering why did I choose to follow my heart..and do what I love instead of going with something that would pay the bill...and it get even harder that now My transmition in my car is going and I have having to drive it like a standard..cause I can't afford to get a different car..much less fix the one I depend on...it just a never ending days of stress...and when I asked for a raise after 2 years..I got 20 cent

Finding what you love to do does not mean finding one thing. It could mean trying out different things that allow you to recognize your full potential. With all the experience you have, you are a good candidate for entrepreneurship. Study a little business management, and you will probably be on your way. Just keep working and keep gathering valuable experience.

Which has more weight in your priorities? I mean, earning a significant amount or loving your work? This may sound harsh, but I learned that almost always, these two don't mix. One has to give way. Starting all over may not be necessary. You may want to try sort of tweaking what you do. I mean, as an employed graphic designer, why not supplement this with outside projects? Offer your services to others. I have friends who eventually quit their 9-5 jobs because the money they were earning from on-the-side graphic design jobs were thrice what they earn as employed ones.

I've come to realise that it is only the lucky ones who are able to earn money doing something they love. We may start with the dream but reality kicks in when we have to pay bills so aspiring singers, actors, writers etc. find jobs that will pay a worthwhile wage. I myself worked as a secretary for years until the day I heard about teaching English for a living. I took a course, found a small part time job with children to start me off and then I gained confidence to teach adults and finally I was teaching at Proficiency Level. So I got there step by step but I could not have done it earlier because of my circumstances. I enjoyed working with young adults, found it was fun and learned more as I went along. I only regretted that I had been unable to do this job before, it beat being a secretary. So if your circumstances are such that you are free to experiment I suggest you invest in yourself, study what needs to be studied and set your goals.

It's never to late to try something new. Around her a 68 yr old women just graduated college and got her degree in something she wanted to do but never could. Anyoen can do anything they want they just have to put their heart into it and have guidance towards their goals. I still don't know what I want to do with my life, I would love to go back to college however and get my degree I only had 3 classes left but had to stop because I kept failing math so hoping now that I'm paid up I can go back and finish. You should try something else if you are truly not happy with what your doing now. Good luck.

Hi dear, try to not think ones are lucky and others are not cause you'll attract that. Every phase of my life was only result of what I was constantly believing so faith, hope or confidence it's an attitude and not a quality we are born with. Try to at least say things like success is coming to me, it's here already and after a year or two you might believe it and change your life.

I was once told being a gold-smith would be a great job, after that making echo's (it just started), next it was IT. But.. if everybody is doing it, it's way harder to find that great job. Same with making a site for the internet. Professionals were doing it, making a lot of money but nowadays many people can and it's hard to make a living with that. I do believe that you can make a good living if you do something you like or better you love. The thing is if you like it, live for it, are enthousiastic you can sell yourself plus your work. Also it will make working big fun. But people change and so do their interests. It's normal. I think you should ask yourself now what is more important: having a job you like or making a lot of money (if possible) or having a job you like plus making more money. In the first case it's kind of easy although you might need an other place to work to get inspired again. If you only want to make more money you can do any profession. In the last case (do what you like plus make more money) you should be able to sell yourself! Start getting active, go for interviews, ask for more money since you are worth it!

Hi Carrie! If you really love what you are doing however you were not able to have the compensation you wanted, you really don't have to start all over again on another field. You don't have to leave your present interest for another. You can have it both. My advise is continue with your present activity and find another activity, online activities for example, so that you may be able to have additional income. Although working online is at times harder than it may seems but I know that with proper mind setting and strategy, you will become successful on this field. You are lucky to find myLot because you can get additional information from our friends from all over the world. Welcome and good luck!
