Is there a reason why children don't or can't speak?

I know too friends who both have toddlers around the same age that are nearly three years of age the little girl chats away and talks about how much she likes different things and such but the little boy is yet to say anything yet. He has had all sorts of tests done and he actually has the learning capabilities of a child older than him but when you ask him questions he just makes little grunts.
Do some children just start chatting when they want or is there a trauma behind it? Does anyone else know of any family members who didn't start talking until a little later than usual and if so what prompted them to decide to talk?
I am pretty sure I was chatting from whenever I could.Just seems like a bit of a dilemma as you cant really ask him if something is wrong at this stage. He does seem like a happy child but it would be worrying to think that it may effect his interaction with children the same age as him and ability to make friends.

Evert kids is special and everyone has differences.
Some kids socialize well at an early age while others don't.
Some kids speaks so well even before they reach one year old- while others started to speak good as late as five years old.
Maybe trauma or bad experiences has something to do with it- and must be taken with proper care.

You are probably right he will probably start when he feels he needs to. Maybe mommy spoils him a little too much too so he has no reason to talk yet as she knows what his little noises mean.

Have you consulted the physician about his hearing capacity? This can be related to this. A person cannot speak he cannot hear anything.

Other than a few eating habits he has picked up he is totally healthy and he hears you fine just makes a wee noise back at you and if you ask him to bring you something using a lot of descriptive words he is able to do it, he maybe has nothing interesting to say yet.

Some kids just dont talk. Its weird to adults to have a child that just wont talk. When I was younger my brother would not talk. I kept telling my parents that there was nothing wrong with him and he would talk when he was ready and that for them not to push him he just didnt have any thing to say. Eventually my brother did talk and I was right he just didnt have any thing to say and did not see the point of just talking to talk. His son is the same way and really we have just let him be. Now that his son is a little bit older he wont stop talking. With some kids they just dont feel the need to talk.

I was one of the kids that if you asked me something i would run and hide or find my mom to hide behind. Its called SHYNESS so many kids have it and they eventually grow of it belive me i know first hand. I also had a cousin similar to me and now she just is very talkative and doesnt run and hide anymore or doesnt find mom to run to as well. I did the same thing but now she is much better and is now 7 and talks. Just give them time and they will come out of it and talk away.

I hope that is all it is he hasn't even said one word to his own mother or her partner yet not one word to anyone. Could just be a phase as you say though. He isn't exactly shy though he was running around the courtyard with a pair of huggies on his head a few days ago in full view of the general public.
