No. being able to play musical instruments doesn't make one a genius. Perhaps it is better if we break down the definition of genius to better understand it. Genius. Definition: genĀ·ius /'jeny?s/ (noun) - a. Extraordinary intellectual and creative power. b. A person of extraordinary intellect and talent. c. A person who has an exceptionally high intelligence quotient, typically above 140. letters a and b clearly states the the word "Extraordinary". I can play the guitar, drums and the piano with ease. But can I play exceptionally or extraordinarily? That doesn't make me a genius does it? In a nutshell with the guitar, I am just like any other joe who can play the guitar. But if I play like Yngwie Mamsteen, Joe Satriani, Slash, Michael Angelo Batio and other legends of Rock and Metal, meaning I can shred and crawl my fingers on the guitar fret at will at high speed and with no effort at all like these monsters of Rock, then I would be a genius on a musical instrument. Decades ago, I couldn't play any instrument. some 30 years later I can play most instruments with ease. But I'm not as good as the mentioned monsters of rock. Mind you some geniuses are not born, they are made, with practice and some effort as it comes naturally. Musical geniuses still do need to practice to achieve extraordinary skills with a music instrument. Perhaps musical geniuses learn faster with little practice time to achieve such skill and talent compared to everyone else. Cheers.

Oh yeah further more, perhaps the word genius is an overstatement. As one can be a genius at math, but suck entirely in literature. So I guess that "genius" is such a broad word, that you need to define in which field one is so good at. My older brother was a true genius in fields he was interested in. He could quickly disassemble any device or engine (even a musical instrument) and assemble it back without even taking notes of small pieces and parts. He was a whiz in math. He could calculate difficult mathematical equations and formulas without writing them down, it's all in his head. He was very inventive and can come up with lots of things when he sits down on it. He could play the guitar, but not as good as I am. And he sucks in literature. He probably fail that twice when we were in school.

I like how you relate to the definition.
I think everyone is born with a natural talent in something and the problem is our reality tells us to focus on certain things that are not necessarily our talents.
I think there is a problem in our culture that makes many talents neglected:
If someone likes to draw and has some talent doing it, his family may tell him this is not a practical thing to do for the future and to keep focusing on his studies.
So, that person could be a genius, but, he didn't try.

I can play a number of musical instruments, but I am not sure whether I would say that it makes me a genius or not. I think that it does take a fair amount of effort to get to the stage where you're able to read the music and play the notes without thinking about it, but there are a lot of other things that you could learn as a skill as well. I think that most people could learn to play a musical instrument if they tried and had the patience to learn the notes, but there are some people who are very talented at what they play.

Hello gemmar, hello shavkat. I play piano and guitar but I`m not a genius, I need a lot of effort to do it.
I think that some people are born as genius, but it is just a few number. We, the ordinary people have to study and be persistence with the practice of music, because music as sports or any discipline need a lot of practice. Don`t you think so?
Blessings shavkat and gemmar ...dainy

Well I guess learning music is really a challenge and playing it with musical instruments is doubly hard since it means your mind is multi tasking already reading notes and producing it out on the instrument he is using. The mental as well as physical coordination of the body and mind is very well synchronized that is why most geniuses are musically inclined. Although not all geniuses are since there are others that are good in numbers, arts and other fields.

No I don't believe that, does it make them smarter? Maybe by opening up other parts of their brains, but otherwise I don't think it makes them any smarter. I believe there are people who play music who are a genius at what they do.

Really, it's the first time that I hear that playing musical instruments is genius, is it true? I am not good at any musical instrument. But I want to be a genius, too.

I don't play any musical instruments myself, but I know that to be able to play well one needs to have good training and spend a lot of time playing the instrument you have chosen. In addition to that, one must also have an excellent teacher and the personality to be able to succeed!

I have no talent in any musical instrument and does that mean I am below par? Those who can play any musical instrument exceptionally well without going through any sort of formal learning can be called a genius. And that gifted person can only be found one in a million people. Rare species!

I believe most who play musical instruments are mathmatically inclined; some more than others as demostrated by ability levels. The title of "Genius" is reserved for others whose capabilities and understanding of a subject far outceeds that which is deemed normal.
One doesn't have to be a genius to play an instrument; neither does one have to be very good at math. Heart and desire go a long way when it comes to learning a new talent.

I wouldn't call people who play an instrument a genius, there is some creativity involved and I think when you are able to create you can make some beautiful music and that's where people think it become genius. I play guitar so I can write music and when write something that other people want to learn to play then you might consider yourself smarter than they are, i.g., a genius.

I do believe this statement. I don't play any instrument and my ex could take a song he had heard on the radio and pick it out on the guitar until they had it all learned and memorized. Now I thought that was genius and was really impressed. They become genius out of love for music, what they hear, what it makes them feel.

I don't know that I agree with that statement, but I do know that knowing music makes understanding math easier.

there is a gift of some being better than others, but like a genius no. we are taught mostly all . some have a better tone than others , some better words, but all can learn from teachers. only if they want.. some may be more creative .. yes I know some sing better than others , but others can train to sing in their own way. what I mean is to relate as the genius..the word genius to me is differant..thanks for the comment..have a great day..

Whether we like it or not , not everyone is given a gift of Music. Isn't it that not all of us can sing , which means that not all of us have a good voice. Some also can sing line a bird ,having a quality voice , one of a kind voice.

I think if someone plays very well, they are a musical genius (though they could be quite daft about other things!). No I do not play an instrument and have never had to opportunity for lessons, so no I am definitely not a genius in this area.. or likely in any thing for that matter! I may be intelligent, as most folks are, but no genius I'm afraid.

I don't believe that. I think the term "musical genius" refers to someone who happens to be exceptional in that area, whether that is writing songs, having the ability to play several instruments or being highly accomplished in one or two instruments.
I am sure that there are geniuses who happen to be good at music or who use their genius in that subject. There are, however, also a lot of people who might be good at music who are otherwise not very bright in other ways just as there might be those who are geniuses and show their genius in various ways but have little or no musical accomplishment.
So the statement "if you play musical instruments, you are a genius" is too general and I disagree that it is always a true fact.
As for how one becomes a genius, I believe it is necessary to be born with such a capacity and to hone oneself, keeping the brain active and making improvements, etc. To be a "musical genius", a person may be a genius in the academic sense of the word but it is, again, partly down to an innate ability but much to do with practice, learning, creating and even trial and error.

Those who play musical instruments are not usually geniuses, just talented. I think that a genius is most often born that way.

While I do think that in order to be able to play a musical instrument you have to be able to use a different part of your mind, I don't agree that all people that are able to play a musical instrument are genius.
You see, I know that I am a generally intelligent person, and I do know how to play the piano, the viola and I am also a vocalist, in no way would I ever say that I am a genius. Instead, I tend to think that I just know how to use the right side of my brain (the creative centers).

What is a genius? Being really good at something may make you a genius in whatever that "something" is, but to me, being a true genius is knowing about a lot of things, and knowing how to do a lot of things across a very wide variety of different things.
