When did your metabolism slow down for you?

I hear a lot about people who's metabolism slows down when they reach middle age and I was wondering if this was true. As of now, I have a pretty fast metabolism in my opinion and I really enjoy it. Of course, I still eat healthy, but my metabolism allows me to eat a few extra sweets during the day without having to worry about weight gain. At what age, did you notice that your metabolism was slowing down and how did you counter it?

I envy you then. My metabolism slowed from the time my thyroid was disfunctional. I am hypothyroid now and being it gives me a slow metabolism. Even though I don't eat often, I don't lose weight. Even before when I went to a gym for exercise, nothing happened. Glad you have a fast one,

Do you or have you talked to the doctors about taking medication to help with your hypothyroid? Or have you looked into vitamins; a natual way to boost your system..

In hypothyroid patient, have to take thyroid hormone from outside of the body because thyroid gland is not able to produce enough amount of thyroid hormone as you body need and i am sure she is talking some thyroxine tablet to maintain thyroid level in body ...This tablet available in various range like 25gm to 150 gm and always depend on condition because in some patient thyroid glands available to produce small amount of hormone and in some patine is totally not functioning but all patient needs thyroid hormone ... Dont worry about hypothyroid just do walking exercise and live happy life..

So you must be getting your thyroid hormone from external source like thyroxine tablet ..In hypothyroid patient weight is always increasing you have to control your weight so do exercise and one exercise is enough for you and its walking but you have to walk 4 to 5 km per day ..just try this will help you to maintain your body weight.. Keep Lottting ...

I am scared of this happening to me! @Sir_bobby88 , does your intake match what you are burning or could you be over eating? I know that muscle is heavier than fat, but also muscle tends to burn more calories than fat which would equal a higher metabolism. My BMI is ~20 which puts me in the healthy range, butI have always wondered how much % I am fat wise!

Metabolism is always depend upon your age and health condition of person ...So you have to keep healthy for your fast metabolism and specially for fatty people because they need more work to maintain health ... As according me walking is best exercise so try to do this exercise every day at least 2 km walk that makes you healthy if you healthy means your organ also healthy so automatically your metabolism increase ... Keep Lotting ...

ohh that does make sense and I have heard that walking is one of the best exercises. It counts as cardio and it doesn't put all that stress on your body the way running would do. I def. want to keep my metabolism as I get older so I will continue to run/walk as much as I can and maybe hit the weights once in a while!

I know my metabolism has not slowed down yet for me. I'm in my late twenties so I don't know when it will stop, but I have my concerns about it. There are pros and cons to this, but the one thing that I'm really not happy about is my being so thin, I'd eat more than average and do stuff I know others do as well to get stout and I just never get anywhere near them.

I really don't consider myself lucky though. I would very much want to experience being stout even once in my life because I know it would improve my appearance a lot, not to mention that it is a picture of health.

You are very lucky! I know how you feel sometimes ,but you get use to your body you know? So even though I am average/thin, a weight gain will upset me. I would have to go out and buy new clothes and I'll just feel different . I guess maybe it comes with aging.

My metabolism is extremely high it hasnt slowed down yet.. But I have asked this question to some of my family members; and older friends.. I have heard between 30 and 40.. Diet and exerise is what I have been told.. I do take vitamins to help keep my metabolism going..

I didn't know vitamins could make your metabolism speed up. I should continue taking mine I guess! I will keep up with my diet and exercise as I age for sure! I know for my family, my mom's side is on the bigger side while my dad's side is quite slim. Most of them are underweight and they don't reach a healthy BMI intil their metabolism slowed down for them. Sadly, I did not get my dad's genes.

My grammy has a high metabolism she is over 80.. She is retired but extremely active.. She volunteers at chruch; a local garden center, she takes care of her own garden&lawn, if she isnt outside she is reading or doing some other kind of activities.. The only time she actually watches tv is when she is eating her breakfast in the morning.. My grammy did a lot of research when it came to her diet.. There are foods that can help/hurt your personal health.. She has brittle bones.. So she eats foods that help with bones... Rice, tuna, beans, and lots of veggies and friut.. She eats a little salad every night with her dinner.. all of her food is measured out.. either by measuring cup or by weight.. She drinks water all day, milk or juice at meal time only.. I lived with her for awhile; I was recovering from some major injures.. Even when I felt really good she was doing circles around me.. I need to get back on her diet.. See that happening when the boys are a little bit older..lol One last tip she gave me.. Sleep very important!! She gets I think it was either 8 or 10 hours a night.. It actually can effect your weight.. Getting on a routine and making a couple life changing with increase your metabolism and help you lose weight.. Have to figure out what is best for you and what you can stick with.. Mirroring all of these magic "diets" or exercise programs will not work alone.. Each person is different, things you can and cant to.. Things you are willing to change and somethat you are not.. Oh if you do quit a bad habit or change something major in your life; do it one at a time, just a suggestion.. My sister tried to lose weight stop smoking and drinking and walking every day all at once... She did hang in there for two weeks twice this last summer.. but it was too much at one time.. The thing that I have observed over the years about dieting is; people set themselves up to fail.. they change their whole diet at once then they feel deprived, so they quit.. Its not a "diet" actually it is a lifestyle change.. The food you buy at the store, how you prepare your food (makes a difference) and the amounts eaten at one time.. instead of 3 big meals have smaller meals and a little something in the middle of meal time... Genes do not help the situation; but its not hopeless though.. With determination and self control you can over come that..

I noticed that after my 4th child, I was 33 then, I had difficulties of losing weight unlike before. I think the lessened activity has slowed my metabolism. I used to work in my brother's pharmacy. It is not a long walk from our house but being busy there the whole day kept me fit somehow.

Definitely I had a lot of exercise everyday while I was still working at the pharmacy. There are a lot of things to be done always. It could be mentally and physically exhausting. And I guess when I stopped working and have just become a stay at home, that is how my metabolism slowed down. And may be because of age.

Working in a pharmacy is really good for exercise since you are always on your feet (not to mention they get a huge paycheck) I think having a child will do something to your body. First, you gain a lot of weight and then losing it can be hard since all your time has to be focused on taking care of your child.

I noticed a small difference after I hit 30 and honestly I think it has more to do with how active you are. I run pretty hardcore, when I'm on, about 40-50 miles a week so that affords me a lot to play with in terms of calories burned . I am also a foodie, I love to eat, and I enjoy cooking, the last thing I am is one of those girls who doesn't order anything or picks.... nope, I eat as much or more than my husband does. We are also lucky enough to have a very unpicky daughter who is fairly active and eats everything. I am recovering this week though, just ran my first ultra (50 miles) on Sat and I'm taking a week off and then one week of taper - low mileage - before my next race. Means I can't just scarf food like I'm used to. LOL! In my opinion, the best way to counter a slowed metabolism is to be more active, and to add in healthy lifestyle changes/habits that are small that you can live with. Some of them might be going to bed a half hour earlier, as consistent lack of sleep has been shown to be linked to weight gain over time. Drinking more water, having more whole foods such as fresh fruits or veggies as snacks and to add color to your plate, using portion control rather than depriving yourself or cutting out specific foods or groups, etc. My favorite way to combat it is just moving more, but I know not everyone wants to work out or run 2 hours a day...

I don't know. Does 31 in a middle age group? If so, I guess I know why I am quite tired after taking stairs to the office sometimes, I feel so tired after coming back from office to home, I just take a bath, eat and go to sleep, all done in less than an hour, I get tired easily, and I notice I am more active when I was 16 years old, I can jump here and jump there playing like a monkey.

31 is kinda middle age. I guess it depends on the person. I find middle age older than 20's and it is when I start losing energy. haha It sucks to get older because I remember being a kid and running everywhere. My parents were always like =0. What is wrong with this kid? Now I am a bit lazier. I hate stairs with a passion but force myself to take them and I do notice myself out of breathe after a few flights when years ago I could walk up multiple flights without being affected!

I think that it can be a little bit harder to keep your weight the same when you are older, but there are things that you can do which will mean that your metabolism doesn't suffer all that much. The first thing that you need to do is to make sure that you eat a healthy balanced diet. If you do this then you should find that you're able to keep your body healthy and this means that it will burn fat effectively. Another thing to do is to make sure that you are exercising regularly as this will help for you to stay fit and carry on burning fat so that you would be able to eat a little bit extra.

ohh thank you for those tips! A healthy balanced diet is something I struggle with because of how fast my metabolism is now. I feel that I can eat whatever I want, but I also know that a few years from now, it isn't going to be like this anymore. I will work on this for the next few years so my body won't be in a shock. Exercising is very important, your right! I will keep up with that for sure. I actually love the feeling I get after a hard workout! lol

As we grow old our digestion power decreases, and metabolism too. you can see, how aged people cannot digest all food or heavy foods, its because of that. when we are young our organs are young ans we have the extra power, but this decrease as the age increases.

That makes a lot of sense! Old people are always eating oatmeal and dried fruit haha! It's going to suck getting older... I think it might balance out because all the heavier food tends to be the food that is higher in calories. If I can't eat that food, than I won't be digesting that many calories.

When i was 25 years old i recognized that my metabolism got slow maybe because of stress, lack of exercise and lack of fluids. I am very worried that time but with the help of my dietitians and regular exercise my metabolism start to works properly until now. Now as much as possible i eat lots of fruit, vegetables and do exercise to maintain my good metabolism.

I dont know if 29 is considered in middle age or not, though i noticed many changes in my routine body processes but i didn't thought them because of age..now after reading this post i have to think with this angle..yes i am suffering from bad and slow digestion and some fat in the belly area as a result, but i dont think its because of age, i know i have some hormonal problems. I am on medicines for all this and i also try to maintain a healthy routine and healthy eating habits.
