I've worked in different lines of work before ranging from nursing homes, motel work, bar/resteraunt work to even construction work. For me the jobs that were mentally challenging were the hardest on me. The jobs that were physically challenging were good for me because I was physically active. Which type of work do you prefer, the ones where you have to be mentally alert or physically alert? I know at the end of a physical day, you can kick back and relax, but a mentally challenging day your mind is still in gear.

I worked many years as a hotel maid supervisor at a las vegas casino and hotel. I cleaned rooms, and was in charge of others. Including ordering cleaning supplies, lenens and things. I get home at night so tired. my body ached, my head ached from all problems. So I feel mine was both pysical and mental. have a great day there. Ps--- Im in Mexico now- sure miss that job and the money.

Oh, yes I've worked in the motel business too! You are definitely right we had to deal with physical, mental and emotional work. Thanks for joining in on this discussion!

I like physical work, but my body doesn't...
I also like mental work. I'm always looking for a challenging crossword puzzle. There are too many easy ones on the store shelves, not worth my time or money.

Most of my jobs have been a combination of both, but leaning toward mental stress and complications. I would love to find something with a straight schedule, only physical, that I could leave and never think about until the next shift.

Yes, I agree with you! There seems to be a combination of both in every kind of job. In most of the jobs I had I tried to learn every aspect of the job. That way if I didn't want to deal with the mental exhaustion, I dealt with the physical. Pretty much neither way would I get burned out on either one.

I have never had a job that was really mentally demanding. Unless you count my last job as an assistant manager at a fast food restaurant. That job was just mentally exhausting. (I hated that place.) I have mostly worked in the food industry aside from a short stint in a warehouse and in a group home. I think I would prefer to have a mentally demanding job, but I don't really qualify for any of those types of jobs.

Oh, yes the mentally exhausting it the worst part of my jobs, worse than the physical challenges. I don't mind keeping my mind active but when people's lives are depending on every decision you make, it's very exhausting!

hi dear Jodee due to the fact I was born premature and am more on the clumsy side having lousy fine motorics, I could not choose a physically demanding job and ended up with mentally demanding jobs. You are right, when your work day ends doing these mentally challenging jobs you dont just close the door behind you but take some of it home, still thinking about these things, and with a physically demanding job you are drained but can most of the time close the door behind you and that was the day.

Yes, totally agree with you! You can leave behind a work that is physically challenging because over time you can get in shape or you at least know what to expect. Whereas a mentally, emotionally challenging job you tend to bring the work load home with you and you hardly ever know what to expect. Thanks for joining in on this discussion!

Totally agree with you the mentally, emotionally challenging jobs seem to drain my whole body. Whereas the physically challenging jobs just make certain parts of the body sore. Thanks for joining in on this discussion!

Before my car accident I'd overwhlemingly agree about the physical job. But now, a really physical job would just kill me. I mean the last job I had was sooo mentally tough, but the few times it required physical things it about sent me over the edge. When it's physical now I'm not just exhausted, I'm in pain.

I like to move around. I don't do that much physically but can't see sitting behind a desk all day either....I like to get up and move around. Don't think I would be good at things like construction though.....and I do love the computer too and have written three books.....so a little of both suits me.

For me it has always been easy to be mentally alert. Perhaps the present is the only time when I have difficulties concentrating. I blame it on chemotherapy, but maybe it is just old age. But I am not very good at jobs that require strenght and I have never been. I do physical jobs because I take command with my head.

I personally like physical work within certain limits. I like using my head as well but again within limits. I generally enjoyed my work in woodworking shops. I loved demolition. Working the chains at the lumberyard was too much for me though. I enjoyed working as a media relations coordinator with the heart and stroke foundation. I detest call centre work. Ideally I'd like a mix of the two but if I had to take one over the other I'd rather do physical work.

I agree with you, a mix of the two equally would make a great work enviroment, wouldn't it? My husband has done some demolition before too, always thought that would be interesting!

I have the same feeling with you,now I have a job of mentally challenging and I really tired of that, just as what you said, after a mentally challenging day my mind is still in gear some even I can not feel happy in the weekend, but I do not have any physical skill so it is not easy for me to find a physical job,so what I really what to do is less pressure's job which I can feel happy and relax.

The mentally challenging jobs aren't bad it's the emotionally challenging jobs that are the worst! Thanks for joining in on this discussion!

I think I like jobs that stimulate my mind. I have had several businesses before which required me to be on my feet as early as 4 am just to pack the fruits to be delivered to different supermarkets and hotels. And also I enjoyed working at my brother in law's pharmacy wherein I practically made every imaginable work available on that particular store! And then I found an online job two years ago where in I had to do a lot of researching on a lot of stuff. I think although I was in a rush most of the time, I loved that work.

All my past jobs are physically challenging as well which requires me to be outside of an office always like running errands, going to government offices for signing of documents or paying bills, and driving. If I'll have to work in an office I think I wouldn't stay for as long as I did in my past jobs because I think it would be a bore to be coop up inside.
