in terms of making one fat, is it bread or rice?

I wonder which will make one gain more weight---is it rice or bread? In our country rice is a staple, a part of every meal. Recently however, because of changing lifestyles, some people can already have a meal without rice but only bread with a dish. I wonder if bread would be a better substitute for rice in terms of making one lose weight. Please share what you know. At present I often skip rice in favor of bread or sweet potato. What do you think?

It is not all about whether you eat bread or rice, but what kind and how much. Always try to go for whole wheat, but also look at your portion sizes. Just because it is a serving spoon of food doesn't mean it is considered a portion. Portions are much smaller than what we think they are. Try to look at all labels and see what a portion is considered and try to stay away from processed food. If you think about it back 50+ years ago tables were full of food, including bread and rice, but people ate smaller portions, they didn't sit infront of computers or T.V. 's they actually worked all day and food was not processed.

You can also count the calories you are eating to control your weight. It does not exclude to do a bit of physical exercise -- walking, jogging... -- to stay healthy.

I've lost lots of fats by simply skipping rice. I never tried to do fasting before so i just fast and skip rice in every meal. The results are dramatic, I get slim in just a few weeks just by skipping carbohydrates but still eating meats, breads and fruits and veggies.

Really? So you still eat bread? I think I'm going to do that too. Thanks for the info.

I prefer a balance diet, veggies and meat. The staple rice is a carbohydrates, it needs to consume to build energy to the body. The food with high cholesterol level are the culprit of gaining extra fats in the body.

Both of them will make you fat according what I have read online. However, likewise here in my country our daily meals consists of both. I grew up like that and if I try to eat other things I get loads of gas. To lose weight you must replace these two with lots of vegetables and fruits. It is not easy, but if you want to lose weight you will have to try to it.

Honestly I've heard that bread is actually worse then rice. If you want to be healthy I'd try switching to brown rice. Brown rice is somewhat healthy. Then maybe have a meat and some vegetables with your meal.

Brown rice is out of the question. It is too expensive and I am sure everyone in the house will not like the taste.

Well, if we want to get technical, rice is a staple food in Korea, China and Japan; they eat it the same way we in the west eat bread, and they have the lowest obesity rates. They don't "only" eat rice, but it is the center of every meal. In western countries bread is eaten in breakfast, lunch, dinner; and with everything that can be made into a sandwich. And yes, most of us are obese or overweight.

You can't say that any one food is bad, because you have to think about the part that the food plays in your overall diet. For example if you eat a slice of bread per day but the rest of the things that you eat are mainly vegetables and a little meat then this would be fine. However, if your slice of bread is in conjunction with other things like cakes, biscuits and fast foods then it wouldn't be all that good at all. I think that wheat can sometimes make people a little bloated, but that is nothing to do with how much fat is in it.

You are right, Gemma. It's what you eat with it that also counts in.

I think it is the rice.. Although i am not so sure.. Since they are both carbohydrates, Go foods. But rice can really make you full.. But i also saw on a tv show that sweet potato is a good replacement for rice, since it has more nutritional benefits.

Sweet potatoes are indeed being pushed by health-conscious people. I also buy them always now.

Oh, by the way...I think that is a very good alternative to rice.. sweet potato or bread, but just take it in small amounts.. ANd pair bread with milk or some "heavy" drink so you'll feel full fast.

I also heard sweet potato is very good for the health. I buy it when I find one in our place.

Rice makes one fat if you eat too much. Now, skipping rice is a sure way to lose weight only if you also exercise. Eating potato is also a great replacement if you want to lose weight.
