How dangerous are snacks like potato chips in our health?

Philippines
October 30, 2012 11:40pm CST
I am one of those who still finds time to enjoy buying snacks like potato chips in the nearest store. Somehow I know it's not the healthiest food around but the temporary pleasure while eating it dominates me. I don't know exactly what is bad about snacks but only with the fact that they are salty. Anyway, if a food is salty, what will be some of it's dangers to our health? Can you give us some insights into this type of food and why we should avoid it and which food would be good replacements for them. "Abadi abadi aba wat's up doc?"

I am guilty of eating junk food when I was a kids. I mean, what kids doesn't, right? But as I grew older, I realized that it is bad for our health. Too much salt can lead to accumulation of salts that could turn into stones that blocks the normal passage of urine into our system. I try not to buy these food so that my kids would not be taking them as their snacks.

Way to go, Jenny! I think it's important to discipline the children and teach teach early in life good habits. I don't have any children because I'm not married, but if I do have children in the future I would try to make sure to lead them to good eating habits :)

Well maybe you could give yourself one day a week where you allow yourself to enjoy and eat whatever you want. I read in one fitness magazine that it's okay to do that and you won't feel deprived at all after 6 days of disciplined exercise and good eating habits. Then you reward yourself on the 7th day :D

It is sometimes hard to resist the temptation, though. So what I would do is to hide from them! I was a worse chips eater when I was a kid. Lol

i was never that crazy over junk food, street food, but i have a sweet tooth and too much sugar is not healthy either, especially when there are diabetics in the family. anyway, i don't think it's the salt only, but the oil, artificial coloring, flavoring and preservatives as well that makes it unhealthy, especially if eaten regularly in large quantities.

I think everyone deserves eating foods we desire once in a while. I read one popular fitness magazine before called fit4life and it tells about giving ourselves one day a week where we allow ourselves to eat whatever we want as much as we want. Of course, this is a kind of reward for following a strict rule of good eating habits in the first 6 days, and on the 7th day it's feast day. Have a good weekend!

Yes, I think you're right! Common sense would say that all of these will be bad for our health. I guess the important word to remember would be 'moderation' and everything taken in large quantities would be bad.

but yesterday, i had a bottle of mountain dew and small clover chips. i get that craving maybe once a week, usually around 2pm and i'm feeling sleepy, but shouldn't. sometimes i just drink coffee. my way of controlling my intake when i want to give in is always buying the smallest size of softdrink or chips.

What are you eating/drinking? - This guy (actually crh in ca. 2009) looks like he is drinking orange juice: perhaps he should be careful: in terms of sugar and so on. Healthy food and drink becomes more important as we age.
I think it's fair to say the occasional potato chips snack will not do any great harm. They are delicious aren't they. Also, if a person is a young, strong and healthy, there's not much they cannot tolerate. However, as we grow older, it's important to be more healthy in terms of diet, or the health can suffer badly, and even break down. I think if potato chips snacks are replacing regular meals, then that cannot be healthy, or if they are eaten to excess. There are after all alternative snacks: nuts (peanuts, cashews, almonds and so on); rice cakes; dried fruits such as raisins; fruit; health bars, such as muesli bars, and so on. So, in terms of snacking, variety may be a good policy.

I'm now nearing my 50's so I wouldn't say I belong to the young ones. lol. Talking about alternative snacks, I do try on peanuts at times but those that still has salt in them so I think I needed to buy one which are not salted. I can also buy dried banana in the store but they are very sugary so I'm not sure if they would be a good replacement, so maybe a real banana could do a lot better. I don't know about muesli bar but maybe they are similar to protein bars, are they? Anyway, these are really great suggestions I should follow myself. Thanks!

Thank you, you're welcome; unsalted cashews are really nice too. There are quite a few healthy snack bars, such as grain bars you could also try.

Okay, I will try to see if we do have grain bars here in the Philippines. I have heard grains are healthy for the body but haven't researched more about it.

There are lots of types of potato chips to purchase. And as a general rule I would say none are too healthy. However, there are some that are at least healthier alternatives! Some are actually made with whole grains and so they are better. Some are baked instead of fried and those can be at least somewhat healthier. As for the salt - too much sodium can be a health hazard because it causes high blood pressure which can lead to heart attack or strokes. The best option is to only eat them occasionally,or eat them in moderation! (but I understand that they taste so good!!! )

Yes, just thinking about Pringles makes me want to buy them. LOL. Sometimes I wonder why so many delicious food are not healthy for us...why? LOL

Potato chips are very greasy and they are quite salty as well. For this reason, if they are consumed in excess they can lead to heart problems as a result of increased cholesterol. However, as I feel to be the truth with anything that we choose to eat, it really won't hurt us if we were to eat it in moderation, but it will cause us to have some significant health side effects if they are eaten in moderation. With a healthier alternative, there are dried veggie chips that are becoming more common now. They are pretty tasty and a lot better for us.

I do hope these alternative snacks like dried veggies and multigrain snacks are really healthier options. I will have to check them out in the stores soon because I believe the sooner we change our bad habits, the better it would be for our health. I would say in general that my overall health is much better 3 years ago compared to what it is now, so I don't want to go downhill from hill but want to correct my wrong habits while there is still time.

Well I suppose the fact it's considered a 'fried' food for starters. Then there's the salt. Obviously not a good choice for a snack but I have to confess...I'm one of those that just can't eat just one!

I would have to agree that these snacks are very addictive and when you finish one, you want to open another one. Sometimes I buy one big bag of snacks and eat it all by myself, but this snack is suppose to be the one made of veggie but still very salty.

Well i think so long you don't abuse the potato chips, it is still fine to eat them once in a while. If you are eating potato chips as your dinner or lunch, it is really bad because it does not contain the necessary elements that keep your body healthy. Furthermore it is classify as junk food, we should avoid at all cause for the sake of our body.

I agree with everything you said, Sir_bobby. There are times when I eat junk food in a daily basis for the whole week but not in large amounts, but I still think once or twice a week only should be better. Lately I have developed vertigo with occasional dizziness and I'm not sure if my eating habits has something to do with it.

I love potato junk food, but i know that it is bad to. That is why i am avoiding junk foods.. i have avoided it for more than a month. Why not just eat fruits, there are many delicious fruits available.. or dried fruits.. they are also good.. Dried mangoes, raisins..

Yes, I remember that I didn't buy dried bananas in the nearest store but banana chips which might be less healthy. I used to buy dried mangoes in the store and I am almost sure I could buy one in some of the stores near our place. Raisins too can be bought in our store, so thanks for pointing that out. And why not real fruits? I will buy more fruits now and eat them whenever I have the craving for snacks.

I am also a snacks/chips lover. I know it's not a healthy food but it gives satisfaction. For every piece of it that you put inside your mouth, it feels like heaven. Hehe! But yes, we have to lessen our consumption of that kind of food, which also called "junk foods". I believe heart will also be affected once you eat too much of it. Good day!

Yes, I guess too much salt in the body could weaken our heart due to weak blood circulation. I can imagine snacks and salty food would not be the best for our health as they are termed "junk foods" which means almost like poisons in our body IF taken with great amounts. I wouldn't want to let go of the pleasure of eating these so called junk foods but I plan to minimize them only in weekends. Good day and happy mylotting!

It had oil, t has sodium and others have MSG, Too much salt is bad for the kidney and it may also cause high blood pressure. Too much oil you know will clog your arteries and may cause heart attack and too much MSG may cause headache and facial numbness. , as long as you will eat it in moderation it wont be harmful but I know lots of people who are abusing potato chips like there is no tommmorow.

Yep, I believe moderation is the key word. Add it with drinking lots of water and exercise, I think our health should be fine. Some snacks are said to be health food like Nova which is supposed to be made from grains, so I think more people should produce more healthy snacks and more delicious ones so that it will later on replace those unhealthy and too much salty snacks we have been so used to.

These snacks have loads of fat and oil in them, and also preservatives. The fat can settle in your organisation, which could cause loads of things from making you less fit (fastened heartbeat, feeling dizzy etc.) to heart problems, if it's that extreme. (but I love them anyways, too, and I think they are okay, if they are eaten within reason and measure)

I had these dizzy spells about two days ago and I found out from my mother that it is vertigo which she also had for the longest time. Maybe it's inherited but maybe it was also caused by eating junk foods on a regular basis and softdrinks or soda. I would have to try to eat them only on weekends starting today.

The snacks sprinkled with salty flavor is harmful to our kidney. Unless, you are hydrating yourself after eating those junk food.
• Philippines

I see, but the problem with me is that I don't hydrate myself with water but with soda or softdrinks. Anyway, I think for anyone who really can't stop eating snacks or junk food, the best way is to drink lots of water after it and couple it with good exercise. Thanks for your helpful suggestion.

Hi, Potato chips is usually very salty and thats a good reason to avoid it.A good substitute would be the baked option and multigrain crisps which are available in various flavors

Yes, maybe you were talking about Nova when you mentioned multigrain chips. I don't know anything about the baked option, but I would check that out. Thanks!

Most potato chips are deep fried so they're very greasy and fattening. Some chips are baked though so while they are less grease but even then you're still getting all of that extra sodium and empty carbohydrates. All things in moderation though. If you enjoy potato chips eat them sometimes just don't live off of them and other junk food. Also make sure you get enough exercise to burn off those extra calories. If you're concerned about not knowing what the right kinds of foods to eat are check out www.mypyramid.gov. There it will explain the food pyramid and why our bodies need certain kinds of foods.

Thanks for the link, but I don't understand why it's not loading in my browser. I have heard about this food pyramid before and I think they showed all the healthy food we should eat, including fruits and vegetables and dairy products like milk and eggs. I think that's all I can remember in the food pyramid. You pointed out correctly that potato chips are deep fried with oil so that should make me understand how oily that snack is beside it's being salty.

I guess you're right. Moderation comes to my mind with what you have just said, and because potato chips are very salty could be the reason why potatos in the form of chips is not it's healthiest form, I mean it is in it's unhealthiest form.

Hi! Some say that if you have a lot of salt in your body, it might affect your kidney. We should be moderate eating foods that are salty. I eat potato chips too. However, I don't overdo it. I think anything that is too much is bad. You can eat still a potato chips if you want to but not too much. Have a lovely day!

Thanks a lot for that info, edvc. Yes, I plan to eat snacks only on weekends and try to eat healthier food on weekdays. I am still trying to write down my diet plans, but still the hardest part is following them and sticking with it. Have a lovely day too!
